I linked up with Wally for a day of exploring around the old ranch and off the JF Trail. We found some old mining claims a few large rock monuments, but nothing overly exciting, mainly just some new lines drawn on the personal map. We opted to walk the road on the way in and ended up with a pretty solid 12 mile day.

We did not pass any other hikers on the trail, but did pass a few along the road on the way out. This area could use some rain. Although, we did run across water in a no name canyon off of the JF Trail and near the area marked the Lost Dutch Spring. We turned around just before Fish Creek, but I think we did enough to link the description. On the way back to the trail we stumbled across a couple of large cairns that were mining claims, or in one case perhaps a memorial to someone.

Despite just a few pedestrian finds, it was a great day out in the Supes, with nearly perfect conditions after the brisk morning, some new intriguing new ground covered and some good Superstition themed chat throughout the day.

Completed the triplet today also, but didn't drive between three peaks, just kept walking. I thought the bushwackiness was minimal, but almost the entire hiking area I strolled through appears to have been burned fairly recently and I didn't follow the official route from the beginning. Settled into a bunch of sheep trails on many of the miles covered. Two hours to Fish Creek Peak, another hour to Black Cross Butte and four hours total to Fish Creek Mountain. From that third summit, I wasn't quite sure dropping into Fish Creek was possible, but the steep and unique ridge descent worked out. I was only cliffed out a few times and had to bypass downclimb a few times. The section of Fish Creek that I did hike has been filled with gravel and sand since I'd hiked it last September. What a beautiful canyon! Awesome Arizona Sycamores, Cottonwoods, giant Saguaros, caves and boulders. I also chose the Lost Dutch exit to Tortilla instead of Fish Creek Canyon since I plan on hiking that another time soon.

We had great plans to set out of the JF Trailhead and hike down to Fish Creek and make it all the way to the Frog Tanks. We did not quite make our goal, but it was an amesome day out in the Supes for sure!

The road in was a rough as ever. I bent yet another sway-bar link. Gotta figure out why that keeps happening. We started off by Scott showing us the remains of the Miller Mine site and the grave marker of one of the miners. Still some signs of the mine, but nature (and filling in by the forest service) has reclaimed much of it.

After that we started making our way down to Lost Dutch Canyon. We saw signs of a trail here and there and ended up in a catclaw forest before fighting our way over to the wash.

Once we made it to Fish Creek, we could see there was a steady flow going. We were expecting pools here and there, but not such a steady and strong flow. What a treat!

The boulder-hop fest going down the creek was awesome. With the water going, there were mini-falls around every turn. Added to that, many of the trees still had their fall colors going. We missed the peak of that by a few weeks, but it was still an excellent addition to the already scenic canyon.

Slow going, a twisted ankle by Jason and many photo stops made our hiking speed pretty slow. We made it to Goat Canyon and decided it was time to turn around if we would make it out of there before it got dark.

No critter sightings, but we saw multiple sets of cat prints, tons of deer prints and assorted other furry little forest creatures.

This was my first visit to this section of Fish Creek and I have to say, it was just like the other sections I have visited - spectacular! I cannot think of a more scenic canyon in the Superstitions.

The trail climbing out was faint in places, clear in others. We knew which way to go an sorta made our own way out following Scott's lead.

We made it back to the trailhead right after sunset and were treated to a beautiful, but shortlived color show. A fitting end to an excellent day in the Supes!.

Thanks for coming along Jason and Scott. I know this will not be my last visit here. Let's go further down next time!

Andy and I have been planning a hike in Fish Creek from Tortilla for awhile now and we finally were able to make it happen yesterday joined by Scott. The road into Tortilla Ranch was a smooth graded freeway as always. 😂Started up the JF trail then went off trail exploring the old Miller Mines and the items that were still scattered around from it. There is a cairned route down however, we figured we would find our own route down, unfortunately it was a very painful one and my arms, hands and legs were bloodied multiple times. Got to the bottom of Lost Dutch Canyon and we were stopped in our tracks by a catclaw forest (oh yea!). Scott had his clippers and after a bit we were able to cut our way out. Lost Dutch Canyon was completely dry so we figured we would see some pools in Fish Creek and that would be it, but to our surprise it was filled with tons of water with huge deep pools and rapids the entire way. About a mile in I stopped and tried to turn around to look at an animal track. As my left leg was planted in mud it slipped the other direction and I popped my ankle. It was pretty painful and weak, but we had worked hard to get into the canyon and I've been wanting to get down into Fish Creek Canyon for awhile, so I sucked it up and continued. Our original goal was to get to the Frog Tanks junction, however, we all of the water, a bum ankle we only averaged about a mile an hour and with the late start we ran out of time. By the time we got to Goat Canyon it was already 2, so we had a quick snack and started back. With a bum ankle and me starting to tire out I decided walking through the creek in spots was easier then boulder hopping around the water. The water was ice cold, my feet felt like a thousand needles were stabbing it but at that point I didn't care lol. Quick break at junction and we started the climb out, this time following the cairned route most of the way, getting back to the truck just before needing the headlamps.
This was probably the most spectacular hike I've done in awhile, and by far the most scenic creek hike in the Superstition's, the views are breathtaking! It was absolutely worth the catclaw and ankle injury to see it. Passed a couple of guys at the start of JF and a guy hiking down 213 in the dark and that was it, however, there were some semi fresh foot prints that we came across at the junction of Fish Creek and Lost Dutch canyons.

Fun loop hike. We were surprised that there was ample evidence of bear activity at such a low Supes elevation. Fresh tracks in the mud and lots of fresh scat. The wasp activity was insane. At our first break it was nearly impossible to sit for very long without being swarmed. Those fallen boulders on the Apache Trail are massive! :o I wouldn't expect the road to open anytime soon. And there were leeches in the few pools that were present, and they were relentless little poos!

It’s been about 10 years since last time in Fish Creek. Of course, now the road is closed so joined 9L for Upper Fish Creek Loop hike. Starting from Tortilla trailhead we walked road over to the overlook and then headed down the closed part of the road. I was curious to see the road damage first hand and it was interesting to see. We ran into an ADOT employee and some visitors taking pictures of the damage. Finally reached the bridge and headed up Fish Creek canyon.

Fish Creek was really nice and we were about right for fall color. Some flowing water in the creek in places as we made way up canyon. Also, really large house size boulders in the beginning that made for sporty challenge but nothing we couldn’t manage. Still the fall color was the most surprising and unexpected. I always seem to forget how late fall occurs in the low desert. After bouldering for several hours the canyon gets easier but still very scenic. Eventually we stopped for short lunch break near our canyon exit point.

After lunch we followed a route out of Fish Creek which was old trail but hard to follow. The route intersected with JF Trail #106 which we followed to the Tortilla road. We did a quick look up Peters Trail and canyon just to check out that canyon. We were not too motivated to explore so we hiked back to Tortilla Road and hiked that out to the trailhead. Did see a few people on the way near the trailhead but that was it for the whole day.

I'd always wanted to hit up the Fish Creek area. We though we might be a little early for some color, but the Temps were gonna be perfect.

We were the first to park at the Fish Creek Bridge area and headed up the Apache Trail towards our turn off, across from the Comfort Station. We hit up the Fliver mark and made our way across Ridge. We had things we wanted to get to and travel across the top was slower than anticipated, so after 2.5 miles of travel we hit up FR213 to make up some time..

Next past the old ranch area, we found our way to the old cairned route of Fish Creek via Lost Dutch. This trail is still there, but easy to loose if you don't pay attention. Down in Fish Creek, the first goal here was to find the Fish Creek Cave. [ photo ] Without knowing it's location, you'll walk right past it.

We had some lunch outside the cave and started the trip back down Fish Creek.

Smaller rocks turn into bigger rocks turn into boulders, turn into houses. You pick up more and more pools of water and the the superstitions turn into a jungle in spots. I kept getting mad at the scenery as I'd already taken way too many photos.

The last 1.5 miles is the slowest and demands you have to pick the correct route up, over, under, through boulder mazes. Joe called it a Ninja training ground and that pretty much sums this portion up.

What a special area and fun time.

Claire read about a loop in some Supes book, and I'd never done Fish Creek, so I did a quick glance at some tracks on HAZ, and it looked reasonable, so we headed out.

The creek/canyon is beautiful, but very slow going for the first 2 miles or so. As it opens up a bit, the pace increases. We filtered some water where the hike leaves the creek, in anticipation for the long, warm hike back around and down to the bridge.

Plenty of cairns going up the hill make it pretty easy to follow, but the spring grasses make it tough in some spots. A steady eye is necessary for those without a GPS-track to follow (like me).

Once back on FS213, you wonder how somebody in a Jeep can't get out there  . It's an easy and relatively flat hike back to the 88. The hike down Fish Creek Hill is great too, save for the dust from the occasional passing car. It was late enough in the day that traffic was light. I helped push a truck out of a ditch. Walking down FCH is also nicer than driving because you can stop and look over the edge more. There are no fewer than 8 vehicles that met their demise on this stretch of road, left to rust on the hillside hundreds of feet below. And at least one boat.

The gem of this hike is the first couple of miles of creek, but the rest of the loop makes it a solid hiking day.

I have been wanting to check out Fish Creek and Lost Dutch Canyons and with the weather starting to warm up I figured now would be a good time, so someday was today. The off trail hike over to the canyon junctions, although somewhat over grown, really wasn't that bad. I was expecting some catclaw, even brought the clippers, but there was none. Lost Dutch was dry but there was a nice flow in Fish Creek. The boulder hoping slowed us down a little but we easily made our way over to the cave to check it out. We continued a little further past the cave then found a nice spot in some shade to relax and take in the beauty of the area (not hard to do on this trip). We returned the same way back to the TH, had lunch, and then made the walk out FS213 to the truck. Someday I will have a vehicle that can make that drive; is "that" someday today? :D I only wish.

Well this is where it all started... the JF trail #106. WE opted to drive in on FR 213 to reduce the miles since we were unsure of how long this was going to take us to complete our trip. Our destination was to go down Fish Creek and exit at the bridge (shuttle). We made quick work getting down to the creek bed but sure enough, that was soon a thing of the past. The "scrambling, squeezing, crawling and walking on slick ledges" began. This is one of them hikes that is truly worth doing, even it's only once. As you get deep into the canyon you are literally looking up 1000 ft. sheer cliffs. It's really quite spectacular. At times you have to stop just to listen to the birds sing as you tend to fall out of reality and become overwhelmed in the majestic beauty this canyon has to offer. A very nice hike it was. :y:

We started the hike at the end of FR213 at the JF trail #106 and made the easy trek down to Fish Creek. From the creek we made a left and continued downstream (dry) for a short distance and then the real fun began. We encountered several areas in which we cliffed out and had to search for some "not so safe" alternative routes to continue our journey towards the bridge. The creek bed was very dry until we were approximately .3 miles from the end our journey in which there were large pools that required more "scouting" to navigate our way without swimming. This was a ton of fun but would not recommend this if you are not familiar with hiking in creek beds because this one can eat you up.

Tortilla TH along FR213 to Tortilla Ranch to JF trail to Tortilla Pass to Angel Basin down Rogers Canyon to upper Fish Creek Canyon down to Lost Dutch Canyon over to Tortilla Ranch and back along FR213 to Tortilla TH

Such a sweet loop in the rugged & less visited north central Supes! :y: I'd almost forgotten how much I feel in love with the many canyons in this area and was again blown away with the rugged beauty of it all on the drive & hike in & out. :o It was exactly a year ago that I first did this loop with some other HAZ guys and unfortunately we got rained on pretty good that second day but I enjoyed the loop enough that I'd been itching to re-hike it when winter came back around. This hike was also the only time I met GPSjoe & friends and was reflecting on what a pleasant encounter that was when I passed that section. ;)

Worked that Saturday morning so hit the TH that afternoon and made quick work of FR213 though sections of that JF trail are almost returned to nature. :? I stayed on course for the most part with some light thorny bushwhacking though some sections had me briefly stop in my tracks and question where the trail went before pushing on... Great views of Supes Ridgeline off in the distance and Tortilla Mt had me longing to soon hike those as well. I rolled into Tortilla Pass just in time around sunset and setup camp for the evening. Since I was solo, a warm night & just an overnighter, I choose to forgo a fire or tent and just slept under the stars and played iPhone games while star gazing through the LONG evening. :)

Slept in a bit the next morning so quickly broke camp and hit that brushy Rogers Canyon trail down to Rogers Canyon and found some clean pools to snag a couple liters from. Once down in Rogers Canyon, I dropped my pack and hiked upstream to Angel Basin to check out those cool ruins again before heading back downstream. Lower Rogers Canyon is always a treat to hike thru and even moreso with all the Fall colors. :D Hit the confluence with Fish Creek Canyon and began the long rock hop. After passing a couple pools, I hit the sweet 'narrows' section that was lightly flowing & full of water though it wasn't quite warm enough for a swim so I did the class 3 bypass on the left which is much easier when it's dry. :GB: The geology of this canyon is quite amazing but after loads & loads of rock hopping that exit trail at Lost Dutch Canyon is a welcome relief. Plus I didn't have enough daylight to push on to the bridge. Put the gloves back on and took that thorny route up & back over to Tortilla Ranch and was able to catch another beautiful sunset while hiking out on FR213. :D

Sweet! Other than at the TH along AZ88, I didn't see another soul the whole time while out hiking.

Rare cool May hike in the desert with John and Owen. John explored some high alcoves while Owen and I napped at the creek. Actually got chills and had to move into the sun.

Pretty Dodder scattered about on the hike is invading various plant life. New Mexican Thistle is blooming from their tall stalks. White Ratany is mixed in with the dominate Fairy Duster. Rattlesnake Weed covers sections as the Brittlebush takes it's last gasp of life.

We wanted a jpumpkin experience so we hit up the authentic Mickey D's. Mickey tried to lock us in but we sweet talked our way out.

This loops been on my list since Nonot wrote this trip description last winter, then Tewa posted an overnight trip for this weekend, I hadn't hiked the JF trail yet or this upper part of Fish, I also hadn't backpacked the Supes since Boy Scouts, and it also turned out to be a great hike to tag along with Wally & Mike on. :y: This loop is kinna borderline long day hike or relaxed overnighter. Wally was willing to drive his Jeep in on that crazy Tortilla Road :scared: so that saves us 3 miles of hiking each way and I logged us only hiking 9 hours those two days if I subtract my half hour sidetrip to Angel Basin. That JF trail isn't in too bad of shape and the views into the canyons along the way was pretty cool. It was also cool to finally meet GPSJoe, SunHiker, and Grashhopper on the trail as well. We eventually Tortilla Pass after some pushing thru the bushes and then angled north towards Angel Basin thru some slightly nasty catclaw just before reaching it. It's been a couple winters since I checked out the ruins, so I took a sidetrip up there while the others continued downstream to the Rogers/Fish confluence at setup camp. Those ruins were as sweet as ever and then I picked up my pack to hammer out the last 2 miles of the day. :D Wally & Mike had chosen a great campsite and already collected plenty of firewood, so all I had to do was show up and cook dinner. I hike a little slower with a full backpack and get slowed down by taking photos, so that evening I was able to talk more with them and get to know them better since we got in early and had a couple hours of daylight to burn. When darkness set it, we started the fire since it was getting cold fast. Some clouds rolled in and then left making us feel safe that it wouldn't rain when Wally & I finally turned in around 10pm only sleeping on pad/tarp .

The next morning I wake up around 5am to some like sprinkles, so I opened up my tarp and tried my best to cover myself with it before going back to sleep. It rained pretty good those next couple hours and the water got in my tarp and puddled lightly so my bag did get a little wet, but I stayed pretty warm and dry inside. The rain stopped for about an hour while we woke up, made breakfast, broke down camp, and packed up just as more rain came. No point sitting around and complaining about it, so we hit the wet Fish Creek Canyon and carefully rock hopped our way downstream slowly perfecting our wet boulder dances. :GB: We soon hit that pool that needs to be bypassed and it was slightly tricky on the wet rock. We made it to that Goat Canyon hoping it was Lost Dutch Canyon but we still had another 2 miles to go. After another tedious couple miles of wet rock hopping & boulder scrambling thru the scenic Fish Creek canyon we eventually hit Lost Dutch. We decided pretty early on to take this short cut out of the canyon and back to our vehicle since we didn't have a shuttle setup and the next three miles downstream would involve loads of scrambling and some shallow pools to wade thru. We made short work of the route from Lost Dutch and were very happy to reach the Jeep and make the bumby drive back out the Tortilla Road. 8)

After descending into Fish Creek near the bridge via Minnow Canyon, I decided to head upstream towards Lost Dutchman Canyon and complete a Fish Creek upper loop via FR213 back to my car. Thankfully the creek wasn't flowing much so I made fairly good progress considering all the rock hopping and up climbing required to get past the first half mile or so. After I got past that, there's loads of pools so I changed into my sandals and just plowed thru them for the next mile or so until the creekbed was completely dry after passing a spring/seep. From then on it was fairly easy rock hopping up to Lost Dutchman Canyon were there's a faint trail up and over the saddle to Tortilla Ranch were I just hopped on the rough FR213 and cruised back to my car making it back just around sunset. :D

This is a difficult trail to follow at this point. I did a lot of maintenance on it today, rebuilding cairns and trimming back vegetation. Awesome views and waterworks await the adventurer.

Veni, Vidi, Vici, ( I came I saw, I conquered ), of course, the famous words written by Adolph Ruth in 1931 in his quest for the Lost Dutchmans Mine. What a feeling he must have had as he wrote those words. When I completed this loop I searched for words to describe. These three words, and the associated pictures, perhaps can help the reader to appreciate the beauty and difficulty in successfully traversing the Fish Creek. You will need all your skills, knowledge and abilities to complete this difficult, seldom completed loop.
