With hopes of getting a hike in but not liking the forecast for Sunday (thunderstorms and rain!), J and I looked for something at a slightly higher elevation that would hopefully get us sufficiently out of the heat to be tolerable. We settled on heading up to the rim, hoping that the temps would cooperate.

We headed in via the Rim Road from the eastern end...which happens to be partially paved - unfortunately I forgot to note at what point the road switched to dirt/gravel. The road is a bit wider on the Sitgreaves side vs the Coconino side, and it seemed to have more loose gravel on the surface. The drive in was otherwise uneventful - we arrived at the trailhead to find it empty, though there were some folk camped out across the road.

After getting our gear together, we headed on down the well established trail, stopping to check the spring and have a look at the cabin before peeling off and dropping down into Dane Canyon. The route down was easy to follow, though the build up of pine needles on surfaces underfoot made some sections a bit slippery to navigate. Once we hit the bottom of the drainage, we started our way up-canyon, following game trails on either side along the benches. Dane Canyon had a decent amount of water in it, with some sections looking more stagnant than others. One noteable pool had a number of small fish swimming around. We were able to navigate along the benches without getting our feet wet - eventually, the water went underground - in that section, we opted to rockhop in the dry watercourse. Soon we spotted the cairn marking the point to depart the canyon - we followed a steep game trail up and out of Dane Canyon to meet up with an old road that we followed to catch the Barbershop trail and the Cabin Loop system.

The walking was easy along the well established Barbershop and U-Bar trails, and the shade provided by the tall evergreen trees was greatly appreciated. We returned to our car in the early afternoon, to find the temps toasty in the low 80s.

Other Hikers: A solo backpacker along barbershop followed by a trio of backpackers just before we hit the junction with the U-Bar trail.

Wildlife: On the drive in, a small bear! During the hike, plenty of birdsong, a couple squirrel, some butterflies, an elk, various fish, a horned lizard (who sat for portraits better for me vs J), and some other shy lizards. On the drive out, got startled by some elk, one of which made an abrupt appearance right in my path as we approached. Lots of evidence of elk (spoor, scat, and bones) in Dane Canyon.

It was nice to escape the heat of the low desert and have the trail mostly to ourselves. Opted to finish the Rim Road and enjoy the views on the way out - there's a lot of active logging going on in the area - and loads of weekend traffic still inbound on Saturday afternoon (somewhat surprising given the rain in the forecast for Sunday). Had thought to swing by PIEbar on the way back out, but didn't want to deal with the long line queued up out the door and into the parking area - perhaps some other time!

Light to Moderate; most prevalent seemed to be goldenbanner, canada violet, common violet, and wild strawberries. Plenty of dandelion also, along with a variety of others. At some point, I'll get annoyed enough with my phone capturing blurry plant photos that are not fit to post to upgrade it, but that day is not yet today 😆 Blurry nonsalvagageable photos included: packera, western wallflower, peavine, and goldstar

With the rain expected on Sunday, S and I decided to hike on Saturday, venturing to an area I hadn't hiked in for a couple of years. Got started off 321A and headed down for a couple of pics of Dane Spring and Cabin, before dropping down into Dane Canyon. This initial section had a ton of smaller Alder trees, so while not difficult to get through, it just added another layer to navigating the benches. There was a lot more water in the canyon than I expected, with several large pools, including one having a good amount of fish. The water briefly retreated underground near McClintock Draw before reappearing shortly after. Made the short, steep climb out of Dane onto the hot road walk before jumping on Barbershop and finishing up on U Bar. Caught a quick glimpse of a bear on the way in and several elk, with one running across the road right in front of us on the drive out, which caused S to drive grandma speed the rest of the way. Came across one hiker on Barbershop and a group of three right before U Bar, and that was it. Tons of cars and people on the Coconino side on the drive out, which is one of the reasons I stopped hiking up on the rim, but with the warmer weather in the lower bowl, it was a pleasant day.

Headed to the rim to put a few miles in the pines. About 80% of both canyons were flowing nicely. A few short stretches were dry, especially at the higher southern ends of each canyon. It might have been possible to stay dry, but it was a whole lot easier to splash than avoid it. Strong winds kept our eyes peeled skyward regularly, but down on the ground it was nicely sheltered.

Had a couple of pups in the group so we managed to avoid any wildlife sightings. Also didn't see any bipeds until a group camping at the Barbershop crossing a bit below the spring. I lost a few dollars when learning that they were actually observing fire restrictions. Seemed like a good bet to me.

This was our (my visiting TX Granddaughter and my) second full day (day 3) of a planned 4nt/5day camping-hiking trip to our Mogollon Rim- The Cabin Loop hiking area.

This partial off-trail and on-trail ~6.5 mile loop hike which begins at the back entrance Park/TH Start to Perennial Dane Spring on FR321A, is one of my very favorite Cabin Loop area hike sections. The off-trail Dane Canyon Drainage section of this hike at ~2.3mls in distance is exceptionally nice with relatively easy navigation hiking up the canyon with beautiful canyon views, water, and a whole lot of solitude. Also, there are various options for nice backpack campsites with lots of privacy hiking up the canyon drainage. On my posted Gps Route with all "key" waypoints noted, I did include one backpack campsite location (see WP) that caught my attention for a good overnight choice.

It should also be noted that even though the off-trail navigation within this section of Dane Canyon is not difficult, the off-trail drainage entrance route from the U-Bar Tr #28 and especially the off-trail drainage exit route out of the canyon UP to intersect closed to vehicle traffic FR9616B requires some decent navigation skills and ideally downloading my posted Gps Route and following it closely at an ~80ft to 120ft interval level. It goes UP and there is downfall to navigate over, under, and around before reaching the more open top.

Kudos also to my amAZing Granddaughter on a very successful (no falls and no blood loss), always smiling, and first time ever more involved off-trail loop hike like this one.. :yr: still!!

I took the day off from work to do what I like best - go hiking! Mark and I talked last week about hooking up and decided on today. Mark suggested the Dane Canyon Loop and another loop close by if we both felt good after the first. Alas, the thunder storms came early today so we decided to call it a day after the first loop.

Before the threat of storms shortened our hike, it was shaping up to be a beautiful day. The temps were cool early, a tad muggy, with morning dew hugging the vegetation as we meandered south along the U-Bar trail. It warmed up in Dane Cyn with the sun overhead, but it was generally pleasant throughout the hike. With the exception of Dane Canyon, where we followed whichever routes looked good, the trails were in wonderful shape and quite easy to follow. That is, when we weren't gabbing too much and missing the turn off, which we did on a couple of occasions. All the better, though; more time to gab!

This was my first trip to the Cabin Loops area. I've wanted to explore up here for a long time. I wish we could have gone a little longer, but it was a grand day nonetheless. I need to get back up there. Soon.

Thanks for driving, Mark, especially so on the way out with all that rain on the Rim Rd.

This was a pretty little loop. I parked where U-Bar crosses through 321C and started the loop clockwise. Got on Barbershop and dropped down to Dane Canyon. Water was less than I thought there would be. But the canyon is green and lush as typical in this area. The loop was fairly well shaded for the most part, which kept Wiski cool. Climbed out to check out the cabin then took U-Bar back to the car.

Uncle Chums is babysitting so we loaded up all the dogs (and 9L). This is a great loop and perfect when its a little toasty out there. There was plenty of water to cool off the dogs all day. We started where Barbershop crosses FR139 and headed over to the Ubar. We followed the Ubar until it dropped into Dane Canyon and then took the canyon back around.

I've been beating the Cabin Loop to death already this year-- I don't mind one bit :D

The temps were getting outrageously hot in the valley so I got together with Chumley and Toughboots and the dogs for a hike up north. We left Phoenix on Saturday morning and made the drive to the rim. The ride took a while but was really enjoyable especially along FR 300.

We started hiking and made steady time as we we dropped into and out of Barbershop and Dane Canyons. We would follow the U-Bar trail and made a counter clockwise lasso loop as we returned via Dane Canyon. The going was very pleasant and the temps were hot at times but enjoyable.

Once back to the jeep we took our time as we prepared for the return to the valley heat. This was a real nice hike and a lot of fun with the group. The dogs are such a treat to hike with. They loved playing in all the water. Good times

Got out of the heat for a nice trip up on the rim. Tons of water. Dane canyon was running over 95% of the time. Just a couple of very short sections where it went underground.

It was just a touch warm when in the sun during midday, but it was perfect in the shade. Nice breeze kicked up in the afternoon.

Thanks 9L for driving and boots for helping split that after-hike 12 pack. :)

I met up with Kyle, Lyndsey & Jacki for a one night backpack up on the rim. The temps were perfect and we got some light rain for a short time. We were also met by Chumley who brought the ice cold beer! :o

We started from Houston Brothers and 300 and made good time as we headed north. After some time we connected to the Barbershop Trail and followed that to the start of Dane Canyon. We took a short break and then started the hike up the canyon. Kyle and I were out here last summer for this hike and really enjoyed it. This year it was more difficult with the full backpack. It also started raining about halfway up the canyon. We put our rain gear on and kept on trekking. Eventually we reached the junction with U-Bar where we met Chumley and the latest dog he's watching. He convinced us to hike up the hill to his truck for some cold beers and other car camping amenities.

The evening was very relaxing. We had a nice fire and enjoyed dinner. We all turned in around 11pm but didn't get to sleep for long. Some A-Holes decided to go shooting at 1am. They were about a mile away and fired some very loud guns! I'm not sure how long this lasted but would guess 30 minutes. Thanks guys for keeping us up! :x

We woke the next day and enjoyed the morning having coffee and breakfast. We packed up and said our goodbyes to Chumley and then started the hike out by following the U-Bar Trail south. We stopped by Dane Spring to top off our water and then continued hiking. We turned west on the Barbershop Trail and stopped for another break at the Barbershop Canyon junction. From there we all returned to the jeep and on back to Phoenix for the heat.

It was a fun weekend and thanks Chumley for meeting us. The cold beers were delicious!

This was a pleasant weekend and we got real lucky with weather. We thought for sure we would get poured on at some point but there was only a short shower.

The four of us started out at the southern end of the Houston Brothers and then took the Barbershop Trail over to Dane Canyon. The going got a little slow in Dane but it was beautiful, lush, and worth the effort. Our plan was to camp where the U-bar crosses over Dane Canyon but Chumley was there waiting for us with cold refreshing beers beckoning us to the camp he'd set up higher on the ridge. There was promises of more beer and firewood so we all agreed. We loaded up on water and then bushwacked out of the canyon to his camp. What could be better than backpacking with all the comforts of car camping?

We woke up the next morning and took our sweet time. It would be a much easier day-- nice trails and no bushwacking. It turned out to be a beautiful weekend.

Had been wanting to do this trip for some time and decided to finally do it last weekend. Got a late start out of Phoenix Saturday morning and made our way up to the Washington Park trailhead. It was a warm day! Plenty of elevation right off the bat on the Colonel Devin trail. First part of the trail paralleled the pipeline then broke off into switchbacks climbing the rim to some looser rock closer to the top. Nothing terrible. Just got the heart rate up and the legs warm. From there we traveled over to the General Springs cabin and up the Haught trail. We were looking for good water sources up the trail but never found anything significant. The trail itself is easy to follow and the scenery was beautiful. Just not much in the way of water. Therefore we hauled it over to the Pinchot cabin then down Houston Brothers to Aspen Springs for the night, where we knew there would be water. Day 2 we ventured South on Houston Brothers down to Barbershop. Given that we needed to head back early Monday we were looking to place camp as close to the Houston Brothers/Barbershop junction as possible. We found a perfect spot at Barbershop Spring, just 10 minutes from the junction. We made camp, set up the tent and day hiked for the rest of the day. We took Barbershop over to Dane Canyon, then decided to head north to explore. Given how dry it has been, the canyon itself was very easy to navigate. I could see when the area gets wetter how difficult this area could get. There are many faint game trails and multiple ways to get around in there. We came across 7 elk in one area - a beautiful site. The day was getting late and we had decided to try and exit the canyon near Dane Springs. From the canyon, about 0.2 miles from the Springs we located a faint trail up the canyon - we took it up and it popped us out on the U-Bar about 1000 feet South of Dane Springs. We reloaded on water there - this is an awesome spring with an excellent flow of water. Back south on the U-Bar over to Barbershop and back to Camp.
Monday morning an early start and back on the Barbershop over to Houston Brothers and then General Crook/Rim Road. In thinking about all of our mileage, I thought to myself - the section from Dane Canyon on Barbershop west all the way to Houston Brothers to Rim Road is pretty brutal. Constant up/down. The trail runs perpendicular to the land contour, so you are constantly going in and out of drainages. Feel the burn!!
The crook trail. This trail is a nightmare. Tried following it using posted coordinates, and in places it is so overgrown or has dead and downed trees that it is almost impossible. There are white markers in some sections then in other areas there is nothing. It really was hard not to just go to the road and say the heck with it, but we stayed on the trail as much as possible, until the trail veered away from the tunnel/Colonel Devin trail. We took the road directly back to that trail and cut off the half mile back to the Springs cabin and then over to the marked tunnel trail.
Overall it was a great weekend. Water was available, but mainly on the Central and Eastern side of the loop. Saw very few people up there and I feel like this area is a true gem for us Phoenix folks looking for a getaway in the Summer months. :)

From Camp Chumley, headed west on Barbershop. I dropped into McClintock Draw (long overdue since I forced Hank and company to take a wrong turn a few years ago  ).

McClintock Draw was pretty easy and feeds into Dane Canyon. I followed Dane down - mostly pretty easy hiking, although past where I'd done it before it got a bit scrambly. I passed the Ubar trail crossing and continued down Dane. There weren't many elk trails below Ubar and the canyon gets fairly narrow - forcing you to stay nimble if you want to keep your feet dry.

Continuing down to the Barbershop Canyon confluence was pretty brushy. Luckily there wasn't a whole lot of locust bush.

Headed up Barbershop, which was better with more elk trails. Reached the Ubar trail and headed back to camp. I heard someone behind me, but several times waiting revealed nothing. Bruce finally broke away and caught me a little south of Dane Spring. Saw two elk.

A third HAZfest I felt obligated to attend even though I had just flown back to Phx on Wed evening after a glorious 8 day all day long hike/vacation. But these are the best kind of obligations to have! Lucky for me Trish offered to car pool and bring all the food and cook; what a relief! I have to say having a personal chef and chauffeur when you're on a camping trip is pretty cool!

On the drive up via Globe and Jake's Corner, we did see the beginning of the Mistake Fire so I got a couple of shots of that as well as the Roosevelt Lake area. We did encounter a few too many way-slow drivers but we eventually got up to Payson where we stepped out of the car to nice temperatures. We picked up some additional groceries and headed up to the Rim for what seemed like a long drive on FR300.

After turning onto FR137? and driving for a bit we see the Camp Chumley sign and to our right Todd was picking up some slightly burned logs for our fire. I looked over at Trish and said "told ya" as I had said with Todd and Nonot around, logs for a fire would not be a concern.

We got set up and I helped Trish with her new tent that is taller than her. I think it will end up being a nice purchase. I know I sure enjoy my new mansion compared to the "kiddie" tent I used to bring to car camping. Soon others started to arrive, we chatted, ate (Thx Trish & I also got to try some of Pam's fresh catch), and then went out to the meadow looking for those pesky Perseids before I turned in for a very cold nite as I forgot my sleeping bag.

The next morning we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in the cool temps of the pines when I look up and out of a jeep pops Bruce and our leader. What a pleasant surprise! A couple of us went and put on our apropos shirts to impress the boss ;) . After visiting for a bit and lending them Corey, they took off for their hike. Little did we know Corey was a wanted man until the Sheriff showed up. Actually his brother thot he was MIA. We dawdled for a bit more and then took off for our hike.

We got back around 1, had lunch, lounged around, prepared for the rain that didn't materialize and had cocktail hour as we waited for the others to return from their hiking. Trish made some awesome TrishKabobs with shrimp and a yummy corn/black bean salad while we enjoyed drinking the apple merlot wine I had brot from an Avila Beach, CA winery. John (JJiii) even showed up. Joe and Bruce joined us for a bit before heading out after Alex and his crew came to camp.

Alex made these most incredible Pittsburgh Mountain (didn't know they had mountains in Pittsburgh) Man sandwiches using an Iron Pie Plate (I found them on Amazon) that tasted somewhat like a pizza but much better. So now it was time to break out the Trader Joe's Dark Ale that I bot at Xmas and saved for a special camping situation. Almost everyone gave it a try. I think it tastes wonderful. Steve helped me finish it off.

We enjoyed the music of 2 hikers and Not Julia before it was time for another Perseid show. Todd generously offered us towels to lay on the ground so that we could gaze into the sky. It was a bit chilly but somehow with all of my fellow HAZers, I felt plenty warm. It was like watching a game and when a meteor would race across the sky, I swear everyone who saw ;) it said "Sccccccccccooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeee" :D . Even though we saw several, we realized it was just too early to get the good show so we headed back to camp.

The next morning, once again we had a leisurely breakfast. Those are so much fun when you're camping. We tore down our campsite, loaded up and headed on down the road after saying our good byes. Yes I have a lot of video but I'm not sure how much will be for public viewing, ha!

It was a great event again :y: . Thx Todd for keeping it on track by making signs, verifying our directions, pre-checking the spot and of course for making sure we would have enough logs for the bonfire. It was great to renew old acquaintances and meet new ones; altho with some of the new acquaintances, when you're on HAZ, it seems more like an old acquaintance.

9-12-2012 Here are the videos at last. I think you can get away with watching them on the full screen otherwise the large screen is the other option. I had a glitch on Part 1 that I had to re-do. If you like fire scenes and music, you will enjoy these. There's other stuff too.
Part 1 - a little bit of our drive past Roosevelt Lake, Friday nite fire activity, Saturday afternoon camp walk about finished by camp activities: http://youtu.be/8JAU8iw4cR8
Part 2 - it's Saturday nite, must be HAZfest around the fire where there was various antics going on including Todd's unrolling of his dinner (I still get hungry watching that  ) with lots of great guitar music and firelight finished off by a short movie from our Meteor watching in the meadow where you will hear the "awh" moment: http://youtu.be/TJIfQPDhBt8
Oh, may I suggest you change the quality on youtube to HD1080. You can find that setting next to the minutes just below the video screen (or next to the clock icon)

Oh boy, where to begin?! Let's start by separating the camping from the hikes.

Thanks to everybody who showed up. It was fun to see some of you again, and great to meet new people. Especially the Coconino Sheriff and the Forest Ranger, both of whom surprised us by showing up without even marking the "interested" column ahead of time. I've always known that a good event usually results in a vehicle with lights flashing :)

Things started slow with just Pam and me arriving on Thursday night. On Friday, Bob stopped by with Bruno after hiking an AZT segment and loitered for an hour or so. Eventually things got interesting, with Laura, Larry, Liz, Trish, Angela, Cindy, and Steve all arriving in time for dinner. Pam and Larry went to Knoll Lake and caught some fresh Rainbow Trout for dinner, and on their way back they brought Corey, who actually fulfilled the requirement of driving his Prius down the mogul road! Later on, Jon and Patrick showed up and joined us around the campfire. I think that was the whole group on Friday night?

Saturday morning, Bruce and Joe showed up and most of us went separate directions and did different hikes before reconvening back at camp for evening festivities. John arrived after an AZT segment, and Joel showed up after shooting sunset. A little later, Alex, his wife and kids arrived, and somewhere along the line Andrey showed up too.

After dinner and shenanigans, we ventured out into the meadow to watch the Perseids. It was a little chilly laying in the abundant elk poop, and I was hoping for a better show, but we were all treated to more than a few cool streaks across the sky and the accompanying "ooooooohs" and "where!!? which way!?" made the whole experience more entertaining.

The next morning, some headed home, some headed on additional hikes. After a nap, I managed to leave at just about sunset. A stop for food at THAT Pub and Brewery in Pine put an exclamation point on a great weekend!

There were a total of four dogs, and all were white (ok, Bruno is a little more yellow), and all fun to see. I also brought home a pair of sunglasses that have a yellow strap. Let me know if they are yours.

I also have a couple of movies that I'll add the URL to the comments for this triplog when I ever get them uploaded.

Headed up Friday evening to Camp Chumley.

Thanks to Todd for all his work to organize this. It was great to meet all the HAZers, lots of faces I hadn't seen before. Some I haven't seen in awhile. Even the HAZmaster himself made an appearance! I think we figured at 21 people in all, including some dayhikers.

Walking out the meadow both nights stargazing resulted in the group finding lots of meteors, of which I saw a few. Couldn't ask for clearer night skies.

Campfire entertainment was great, but I doubt it will make it to Youtube!

Based on reading triplogs of this hike along with our great U-Bar Trail hike from the same TH last year I was more than a bit surprised we didn't find this one very appealing. Part of it I suppose was once we left the creek on the canyon floor all there was for scenery were the pine trees along the old roads.

Yes it was green and yes there was water flowing, but it just didn't catch my fancy I guess. (So after knocking this one out we stopped for a hike at Kinder Crossing on the way home... and it made up for what I didn't feel on this hike.)

Only eight photos this trip.

I got a late start and spent too much time exploring, so I only went up the canyon to the road and back. It was blissfully quiet and unoccupied, not to mention lush and bright. I'll have to come back and hike the rest of the loop sometime.

We met up with Hank at Dane Spring TH and did a very nice loop through Dane Canyon and along Barbershop and U-Bar trails.

Afterwards we were honored to be invited over to "Camp Grasshopper" for some delicious hors d'oeuvres before the trek back to the valley - thank you Hank!

Amazing that this is my 7th time since June'09 to hike one of the many available loop options for this excellent hike. I just never tire of hiking in this lush green and remote canyon area where I have yet in seven visits to meet-up with any other hikers. I would still like to thank Kurt and Randal for providing me in May'09 with the hiking details to allow myself and nonot(Steve) to be able to hike and later publish this HAZ hike description for many others to also enjoy.

I always enjoy introducing others to this loop hike and on this trip which was on my fourth camping day on the Mogollon Rim-Cabin Loop area, Richard, this wife, and a good friend drove up from our PHX area to join me for this hike and then a visit to "Camp Grasshopper".. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=201857 for some shade, R&R, and of course some delicious hors d'oeuvres before their late trek back to the valley. Thank you three for another most enjoyable hiking day and visit :D
