linda drove us up to dynamite and pima this morning
set out around 0830 or so
nice temps, warming up enough for a wardrobe change after an hour
we did a variety of trails for some good linkage
some of the trails were more scenic than others
not much elevation gain to be had but good trail surface with excellent footing
more mountain bikers than hikers
about half the trails were new to me
thanks for hiking, linda, much appreciated! :)

*break time seems long, just checking route possibilities, ladies' room stop and moving aside for bikers

Kelly and I opted for some new territory on the McDowell North part of the preserve. Parked at the Pima Dynamite trailhead and got started. The parking lot was nearly empty at 0830. Nice temps to start, but it warmed up quickly with full sun and no breeze. Didn’t have any set idea of the trails to do, but linked up enough to at least hit ten miles. Everything was easy, with good footing. A fair amount of bikes, but only a few hikers. As we were finishing, there was a helicopter circling overhead, and plenty of emergency vehicles from both Scottsdale and Phoenix. More were arriving as we were driving out. Nice morning and good to knock out several miles with Kelly.

... still catching up from my wildflower hikes:
Well I'm still on my wildflower hunt so I thought I would try the McDowell Sonoran Preserve plus I've been wanting to get out here for a few weeks now, and on a weekday.  The temps were supposed to be warmer today, but with a slightly filtered sun, it should be just right.  I decided on the Cone/Brown clockwise loop.  At the trailhead, I talked of my route to the docent who asked, he warned me of a rattlesnake on the Wrangler.

I could tell right away that wildflowers were not showing yet and that was fine; it should mean less filming/picture taking and more hiking.  What was I thinking?  After all, this is a lush part of the Sonoran Desert and out here, it was big and there were boulders scattered about as well.  I ran into quite a few hikers on the Upper Ranch Trail in the first mile.  One seemed relieved they were only 1/2 mile from the TH.  The sky was pretty for most of the hike and the filtered sun made for some nice picture taking and movies :D

This Preserve is well-signed but not perfectly as I missed my turn on the Cone Mountain Loop Trail and when I realized I was headed on the northeast side of Cone Mountain, I backtracked to the intersection with the Wrangler Trail.  The trail swings pretty wide as it traverses the lower regions below Cone Mountain on the south side.  There were dots of poppies but lots of Wiry Lotus.  You start seeing more boulders closer to the trail as you get toward the southwest side.

As I rounded the west side the clouds seemed to join together to create a slight overcast.  There was a bit of a breeze and I was surprised that it had a cold feel which was rather nice; at least now.  I went through one section with lots of tall Desert Lavender and there were even a couple blooms.  The little valleys you pass through would have bigger patches of poppies.  The other thing I would start seeing more of was the Soap and Banana Yucca plants; especially once I headed north on Cloudburst Trail where I should have headed west on Cone Mountain Trail to catch the trail below Brown's.  I didn't even think to check RS and my "pin to track" must not have been on to notify me.  As I kept going north, but then west, and zigzagging, I still thought I was going the right way; especially when I reached the Hawknest Trail and finally started heading east.

The Loop doesn't list the individual trails so I'll have to keep that in mind when I do these loops out here.  Fortunately, it was fabulous terrain and I was entertained by the desert flora and saguaros.  I kept thinking maybe I had been out this way before and looking back, last year I was on the Hawknest Trail but from the south to Cloudburst and along the west and south side of Cone back to Pima/Dynamite TH.  This part of the Hawknest I had not been on.  It had a few cool little valleys that Mother Nature did a very nice job of decorating.  I really enjoyed those.

I was glad to be going east but then I got concerned with how far east was I going?  Eventually I came to another intersection with the Basalt Ridge Trail which would take me south to where I wanted to be.  This was also a nice little section of trail.  Off to the southeast I could see this long patch of green so I tried to zoom and get pictures as it really stood out; looked like it had been manicured even.  The summit looked so small from here as I continued.

And then I finally arrived at where I should have been a few miles ago, the Upper Ranch Trail and Brown's Mountain Trail.  And, believe it or not, I had gotten slightly chilly the last mile or so.  Up I went observing the trail had been beaten up pretty bad from people using it when it was wet or slightly so.  There are a couple bedrock areas to walk over which is something I like.  It's not a tough hike up and there are a couple flatter places where you can catch your breath, or in my case, take pictures of the distant views which were showing up very distinctly.  It's when you take pictures of those mountains/mesas that you realize what a huge valley :o we live in and we're lucky to have a few mountains in the valley to climb up.

I debated whether I would do the short trail to the summit but since the wind had let up a little and it's a short hike I headed on up Brown's Summit Trail.  A family had gone up before me like they were goats.  I was glad I summited as the views with this light and our.... you guessed it, green desert floor, the area was beautiful :app: .  Those distant views to the Superstitions and layered looks to the west were even more pronounced now it seemed.  And because of that light, the Four Peaks with their remaining snow were photographing beautifully as well.  I actually sat down, had a mini Kind bar, and responded to a text from my brother.  The sun came out for a bit and warmed me up too.  But it was getting late so I headed back down.  I did slip and fall on the loose rock but no big deal.  However, I will note, the trail down to the saddle may be short, but it is slick.  Gosh, the last time I was up there was 2014 so I was due.

And now for the last 1 1/2 miles on the rest of the Brown's Mountain Trail back to the TH.  There were still people coming up, the Park closes at 6:25 and it was around 5 now.  The trail zig zags down so it makes for changing views and still not much in the way of wildflowers, but there was plenty of other interesting desert flora that we don't get to see as much of over on the Phoenix Preserves. The limited sun was trying to light up Cholla and Granite Mountains. The sky colors were somewhat muddy but I was still able to frame up some tall Soaptree Yucca.

And now to enjoy my huckleberry beer after another successful hike, even though I actually get a little more tired when I do all that filming as it takes longer.

Once again, I took a lot of movies but wow, what a beautiful day and great filming conditions :) .  The light really made the distant areas show off and of course, still snow on the mountains.  The views from the summit were outstanding in this light, trust me:

FYI - while doing some research I found this piece that was put together in 2021. It's a quick read and with photos. I think most of us that like geology will like this article: How the Valley of the Sun got its Valley https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/2f ... e8c667088c

Lately I'm inclined toward hiking in the Scottsdale area on Fridays to try and avoid the weekend crowds. I've not seen nor hiked near this trailhead. So after my hair appt in N Scottsdale, picking up a Subway sandwich that I ate at the TH, it was time to start hiking.
I had drawn out this loop of around 8 1/2 miles; pretty flat, I couldn't seem to fit in a hill :( . I had to limit my time out here as I had an evening event to attend to see my niece cheerleading at her high school's quarter final basketball game at Veteran's Coliseum. I knew this was a likely biking area so suspected the trails would be smooth as glass and they were. It really does let you enjoy your surroundings so much more when you can walk and gawk.

I started with the Hawknest Trail on the west side of this area and headed north. I immediately noticed it was a fabulous desert area and would be for the whole hike. Throughout this hike, there are also smatterings of boulder sections so that's always fun. The flora was changing throughout and there were saguaros dispersed as well. The only distraction were those darn power poles but I did get somewhat used to them.

There are many trails that intersect and while there are signs, sometimes they are just a little confusing. I pretty much knew my route and how far I needed to hike so I didn't have a problem. I finally got far enough and high enough that I could now see the snow on the mountains so I zoomed in for a closer look. After passing by several other trail junctions, I finally got to the Cloudburst Trail which would start my route mostly to the east, altho it squiggles north from time to time. You have nice views of both Cone and Brown Mountains.

Next was the very scenic Cone Mountain Trail that I had lost been on with Linda a few years back. It was near this section where I would see the only Teddy chollas. You start heading slightly south while continuing east. There's lots of boulders and great flora as you hike below the south flank of Cone Mountain. I hiked by a nice section of lavender plants. I now hooked up with part of the Hackamore Trail that took me east. You can take it to the southside of Brown's Ranch TH; for me it was just a 1/2 mile connector to the three miles of the Latigo Trail southward toward the Pima/Dynamite Trailhead. I now realized I would get done sooner than I thot and wish I had brot an after-hike beer.

Hiking into the sun limited my photo taking for the most part. There are views to the Tom's Thumb area and McDowell Mountains as well as a lot of green grass of Troon. And even though you start seeing houses too, you still feel very much in the middle of the desert. Oh, before I forget, occasionally I would have to get off the trail as bikers would pass by and the ground was so cushy :) ; I really liked that. There were several intersecting trails so once again, I felt the need to consult the signs to make sure I stayed the course.

There were interesting changes of flora as I continued south and now started to encounter more hikers and bikers. I would probably see about a dozen hikers and two dozen bike riders on this hike so not bad. I'm still having problems with my once seemingly flawless phone camera. I'm going to change the lens protector as maybe it's scratched and see if that helps. The trail makes a wide swath as it takes you to the TH.

These TH digs are really quite beautiful. The bathroom was very nice and very modern as was the water station. These trails are a little flat for me as I like to throw in some sort of climb but really nothing much around here except maybe Rock Tank Trail.

WATCH: 8.69 miles (2,760 high point/2,365 low) Avg 133 bpm/151 max with 57% in Zone 3 aerobic, 42% Zone 2 Weight Control burning 1,230 calories. Starting temp 59, sunny and 27% humidity finishing at 12:54PM. Believe it or not, I kept my vest on the whole time. It was mostly the breeze that kept it just a tad nippy for me.

Chuparosa were in all sorts of conditions and some were superb! Wiry Lotus was mostly that. It's just not the most beautiful plant to photograph. A few of the Mormon Tea were also blooming as was the Bursage... once again, not the most beautiful of blooms. There were a few blooming Wolfberries too.

Drove out to one of my favorite trail systems….McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Wanted to get a loop involving Cloudburst. Got to the Brown Ranch TH around 7am. Went in on the Upper Ranch trail. One of the nicer entry points into the preserve. Connected briefly to the Cone Mountain and then it was onto Cloudburst. First time on this trail. Nice single track with some sweeping curves. Ideal for bikers. From the Cone trail it is more down than up; so definitely the direction you want to be going if you are on a bike. Cloudburst ends at a crossroads of trails. Took the West Express for a short stint to connect to the Hackamore. Neat little juncture, quite a few uniquely weathered boulders pepper the landscape. On Hackamore for just over a mile to connect to Latino took Latino back to the TH. Nice run. Temps were only in the 80’s but it felt worse with the humidity. Got spit at few times by Mother Nature, so sadly Cloudburst did not live up to its name  …Love the McDowells!

With the Steeler debacle happening on Thursday night, Sunday was open for a nice hike with the family. A few new trails in the northern MSPN were recently published, and I never took them up there before, so this seemed liked the way to go. I decided on a circuit with the Cloudcrest and Tarantula Trails that was between 5 and 6 miles long.

I realized at the start I forgot to pack my camera and GPS, so I had to wing it using my phone as both. Not my preferred option, especially for the camera, but the habit of redundancy helps out.

We started out on the Upper Ranch Trail, then took the Cone Mountain Trail to the Cloudcrest Trail. Then a bit further east on the Hawknest Trail, then southbound on the West Express to the Tarantula Trail, then back to the trailhead on the Hackamore and Latigo Trails.

Saw more bikers than hikers during the hike, and one group of horse riders at the start of the Latigo. Temperature seemed to be a bit warmer at the very start then at the end, which was unusual. I think the breezes picked up later, contributing to that. Much more sun than yesterday, had to keep my hood up to prevent sunburn this time.

Hit Four Peaks for lunch on the way home, nice Sunday morning.
