Prehydrated: 38 oz
Carried: 174 oz (124 frozen)

When I arrived, a large group of about 16-24 people was getting ready to head out. I thought they were runners, later realized they were mixed ages and backgrounds. I started a half furlong behind them. I passed them and then never saw them again, concentrating on transitioning from Grillz to My Way. Guessing they turned on Desert Classic.

This was my first time on the west side of Bursera. More people out here than expected. Teenage girl, three guys (Kurt Sedler types), then two guys who could be star quarterbacks or excellent car salesmen. The geology is more reminiscent of Estrella/Piestewa.

This is one of those rare hikes where you're hiking away from looking at the sun or without staring at the sun on the drive, either.

The West end of Gila is undoubtedly loved by no one. It skirts the bajada, dipping in and out of a few ravines. Whereas the Bursera across the ravine has nicer alluvial geology to glide over.

The steepest grade on Prospector was in full sun, but I got a nice breeze.

Generally, I avoid Goat Hill, since it's illegal. The pre-planned hike was under 20 mi and under 5K. So I figured I'd hit a few little peaks along the way.

Two rangers at the bottom of the Ranger Trail with a funky couple behind me. Luckily, I'd recently tackled these nondescript multi-use trails scattered about the actual trail and sailed through.

I needed to rearrange a lot of water bottles and such, so I thought it'd be a good opportunity to tackle a sliver of Judith Tunell Interpretive Trail and utilize the Ramada for a few minutes. Whoo doggy, the rubberized grate bench in the shade was comfy. What are the chances two families came off-trail directly down the hill and stopped at the Ramada... lol C'est la vie, probably best to keep moving anyway.

Dec 23rd 2024, KingLeonidas posted a clue via RS where the temporary or new trail routes. It worked out great. Just be sure to verify which days are legal, cuz I'm no angel. From previous hikes, I had a lunch spot in mind. Only partially shady, but it worked out. I ate half of a dry WinCo ham and cheese on a pretzel hoagie, cuz there needs to be something other than water and electrolytes in the mix.

Realized I only had 36 oz of water left. So I nixed two side trips to push it over 5K in favor of life. Since it was later in the day vs recent previous trips, a few more shade options were opening up. I took a 6-minute break at one, but just wanted to finish the hike.

40 oz more water would have been better, but it all worked out.

Android stats in airplane mode start to finish, 2,983 points, used 25% battery.
iPhone 20.15 mi / 4483 AEG | 3,228 points, never in airplane mode, used 35% battery.
2 bug fixes for RS 7.2.4 in dev worked, perhaps out in a few days.

Hoping to loosen up my still sore hip from Sunday’s hike, we went out for a short morning hike, it seemed to do the trick! :) The loop is a mild up and down meander through the washes on mostly flat ground. The tread is well groomed, aside from a short section on the northeast side that is layered with ankle eating rocks (mild exaggeration, but better to be warned than not : wink : ). My mileage includes our walk from the house, but the loop is only 2.64 miles. We saw 2 dog walkers, 2 hikers, 1 cyclist, and 1 coyote. No wildflowers.

Quick hike with the dog. I was hoping it would feel cooler, but I guess it was okay. Did Cholla Flats Loop counter-clockwise, then took the wash back to the trailhead.

Midday hike at SoMo. Did a loop of Cholla Flats. Went about .55 miles from the new TH to reach the Cholla Flats connector and then took the trail clockwise. Trail is easy to follow. There are a couple of use trails on the eastern and southern edge leading to residences. Most splits are obvious. Staying on the well worn track will keep you on the Cholla. Uneventful. Just nice to get out and stretch the legs. Encountered 13 users, no wildlife.

My favorite loop on South Mountain. It's been a few months since I last did this loop. The first bit climbing Bursera felt hot with the sun beating down on me even though it was still morning. Air temperature was cool, but I wore a long sleeve shirt and there was absolutely no wind. But by the time I reached the bottom of the hill it had clouded over and felt much cooler. Just as I got to the wash crossing I heard a strange sound. What is that? It's raindrops hitting my hat. It's raining! Did not expect that.

It was just a sprinkle, not enough to get the ground, or me, wet. I made good time getting up the last bit of Bursera to National. Sun came out as I hiked National, but the rain has cooled things off nicely. I took the spur to Goat Hill where I rested and ate some trail mix.

The rest of the hike down Pyramid and back went quickly. The wind started blowing and air temperature kept dropping.

It was a Sunday morning and the first decently cool day in years, but there were very few people on the trail. Perfect!

Quick hike with the dog before it got too warm. Did the loop counter-clockwise. Saw some rabbits, coyotes, quail, and hummingbirds. Dropped into the wash for a while, but the beehives were pretty active, so we got back onto the trail before too long. Lots of people as we finished, crossed paths with JJ.

Late morning walk around the short loop. It was getting hot out I would have done the longer loop. Still nice to get out of the house.

Nice easy lasso on the Cholla. Did the loop CCW. Wanted to get the eastward part of the hike done before sunrise. Partially successful. Saw 4 coyotes crossing the wash near the Pyramid/Gila juncture. I am a little confused by this signage at this juncture. It made it look like that the Gila is now the Pyramid trail. That would be quite the revamp. Hope I’m wrong.

My fellow vanpoolers all unexpectedly bailed, so I took advantage of the free morning and did this foothills loop before work. Started early by headlamp and then was hiking in the shade a lot. The sun warmed things up eventually, but there were some nice cool breezes throughout. Definitely won't park again where I did, even though it is a public Phoenix street with an absence of no parking signs. Somewhat expected there to be a neighborhood tryhard and wasn't surprised by the fake ticket on my windshield afterwards. It must be tough living sequestered away in such a sterile and superficial environment. Very nice SoMo hike notwithstanding.

My grandson Isaac and I are hoping to get a few hikes in while he is on summer break. Tried this one this morning. Got out early to beat the heat. LP caught up to us on his way to Goat Hill. He was meeting up with Kelly and Fletch. Good to see ya John and sorry we missed the Ladies! It would have been good to see them! Thanks for the hike Isaac! Hopefully we will get a few more in. Like HAZ, you rock!

Easy walk with the dog. Did Cholla Flats Loop, then came back in the wash. Saw two javelinas early on while on Cholla Flats; they were walking west, so it occurred to me we might encounter them again. Uneventful loop. The return in the wash seems to be Harlow’s favorite part. A few weeks ago in the wash, we passed a spot that smelled musky, so just before reaching that same spot, I picked up a baseball sized rock. Sure enough, those same two javelinas were under a tree and they jumped up as we approached. A fairly well aimed throw of the rock encouraged them to run away from us. They ducked into a sheltered spot on the side of the wash and stayed there until we quickly got by them. Warm today, and way more sunlight than I like.

Easy hike with the dog. Cholla Flats counter-clockwise, a small piece of Pyramid, then Gila over to the wash by the ruins, and back to the trailhead. Crossed paths with JJ in the wash on Pyramid. Nice weather, was hoping for more clouds.

Kept the aeg low today to A: let @losdosslofolks catch up to Harlow, and B: give the dog something easier after her bigger hike yesterday. Felt a little cooler than yesterday, maybe due to the slight breeze. Did the Cholla Flats loop counter-clockwise. Easy trail, mostly flat, some nice views, and tons of downed saguaros along the trail. I probably saw at least thirty of them that looked like they had toppled within the last two years or so. At the junction with Pyramid/Gila, we stayed west on Gila, then headed back to the trailhead once we reached Ruins. Not many people out today. Chatted with one woman who had a four month old Australian Shepherd.

Up and down Pyramid and around Cholla Loop. Just wandering (such a nice day) and ended up on Lost Ranch. A few hikers and not many cars at the trail head. Air quality was a little better on the trails today. Could see the Estrellas better than yesterday!!! My ribs were aching by the time I was done thanks to the lost wrestling match with my 6 yr old Grandson.- - - One of these days I will realize I almost to old for wrestling!!! Great day for a hike!!! HAPPY HIKING!!!

Another stay over in Chandler meant an easy drive to the Pyramid Trail Head. Before leaving for the hike did a short one mile dog jog which resulted in a left quad strain which was annoying all day, chalk it up to just another old age malady. Ended up making this a large lasso loop, went up Busera for a change instead of as usual coming down from the Gila connector. At least from above at the junction with Busera Canyon these trails are looking familiar to me. Cut over to the visible Gila Trail , took it and went up and past the Busera connector all the way back down to the junction of Pyramid. After reading the excellent guide about Cholla Flats Trail decided to try it , figuring at worse I would end up on my familiar Chandler Blvd Trail  Only saw one other along this trail and they took one of the neighborhood side trails, by now it was heating up and I hoped to see an ambitious youngster with a lemonade stand in one of the many backyards I passed but alas no.Thought there was some nice 360 views of the surrounding workout trails visible, this trail is well signed, no shade however so even too warm for a spring day. Cruised back to the trail head on Pyramid. Surprised I’ve not seen a rattlesnake in South Mountain Park ! In fact no wildlife spotted today except a roadrunner with a lizard in its beak.

Slept in a little today so I decided to do something close to home. Got to the Pyramid TH just before 6:30am. Got to say I’m liking the 202 loop! Easy drive. After yesterday’s long hike this was a nice change....Cholla Flats is pretty much that....flat. Decided to do the loop in a clockwise fashion this time. Got to say, I think that is the way the way to go. There are a couple of hills that have to be tackled, but they are short and you are always rewarded with a downhill slope after. Encountered 19 hikers, but only 3 on the Cholla section. No wildlife. At 6am, temps were great in the 50’s.

Short afternoon hike. Temps said 49 degrees when I left Pyramid TH but I think it was a little warmer than that when the wind died down. Just got started when I got word that the GK were coming over for a sleepover so I cut my intended hike short. Went to check the bees on the way up Pyramid and decided to walk down the second wash that crosses the trail. Glad I did!! With the crisp clean air and quite made the hike a pleasurable one. Even though it was short I got to see some different things. Came out on Cholla Flats trail and saw one biker. With the nice rain we had, no dust flew when the biker went by. 🙂 when I came out of the wash, the Estrellas, a-washed in sunlight, seemed to dominate the landscape. Few hikers on the way back to the TH. About 10 more cars dotted the parking lot as when I started. Great day for a hike!! HAPPY HIKING!!😀😀
