Early morning hike in Sedona. Decided on Bell Rock. Parked at the Bell Vista TH a little before 5am. Took the Bell Rock Pathway to the north side before starting my ascent. There is actually a trail called Bell Rock Climb that starts you out. Cool. However, this trail levels out pretty quickly then it’s up to you to follow the use trail that seems best. I got to the base of the vertical stack and felt good with that. I was up there before 6am and was surprised to see 3 groups already scrambling on the sandstone below me. Beautiful morning. Clouds and temps were awesome. Chilled for a bit before heading down.

Wanted to get a few more miles so I briefly followed the Rector Connector/Bypass to the Bell Rock Pathway which I took to get to the Courthouse Loop. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on Courthouse. Nice trail, but it took longer to connect to the Big Park Loop. In my mind it was more on the southeast side. Took the out portion of the Big Park Loop and then took the Middle Trail as an in and out before heading back to the TH.

Pleasant day Sedona. When isn’t it? When I got back to the TH parking lot was full, but I only encountered 9 people on the hike. Not too bad for Sedona. Minimal wildlife. I had chipmunk show me how it was done on Bell Rock. Showoff  Also, had a whole pack of coyotes great me as I started my hike. I didn’t see them, but it sounded like there were 50 on the other side of the hill.

Our get out of town hike didn't start out too well as we circled the north Bell Rock/Courthouse TH a couple times hoping for a parking spot. Fortunately, we were able to find a place to park at the south Bell Rock TH along with the rest of the horde. It was a little warm with not much breeze.

We took off and did the Loop clockwise; when I last did this loop in 2009 with my brother, niece and cousin we went counterclockwise. The closer we got to Bell Rock the more crowded it got pretty much until we hooked up with the Courthouse part of the hike. Like most Sedona hikes, this one has some great views which really started to kick in once you get to the northside of the loop as you can see Cathedral Rock, Doe and Bear Mountain area, Thunder Mountain, Airport Mesa, Brins Mesa area and Twin Buttes. And then there's the Baby Bell Rock you can do a quick loop around if you want.

You kind of have to pay attention as you hook up with Courthouse Butte Loop when you start heading ESE. The breeze picked up just a tad here as well as some cool clouds in the sky. As you round the corner you can see the Rabbit Ears which are always fun to photograph. My niece and brother created this photo here, it is so cool [ photo ] :) The area has lots of brush and trees including prickly pear with very big ears which I've noticed quite a bit up here.

We encountered a few other hikers on this leg as you enter and leave the wilderness part of the hike. It's a $300 fine if a bike rider passes through here. A little further south and the Spaceship Rock (also apparently called Muffin Rock but we went with Spaceship in 2009, thus this picture [ photo ] ) finally shows up. As we passed by we noticed an ocotillo garden and took some photos. As you get more to the other side of the rock, it looks more like a spaceship.

We continued hiking to the southeastern side to a junction in this drainage area. Here you have the option to continue west on the loop but Ambika noticed that the Big Park Loop takes us to the TH so we opted to do that. I had not been on the Big Park Loop so we were pleasantly surprised. It is a fairly busy bike route though so keep your eye out. It's not easy for them either as it does involve a couple little uphills if you're coming from the west. I don't remember there being a Big Park Loop when we hiked this area in 2009. Anyway, we really liked it as you really got a longer view to the Butte and Bell Rock and with the cool little clouds swirling around, it made for some nice photos.

The TH was even busier when we got back. We were surprised to see so many people of all ages and dogs as it was now in the high 80s. We grabbed the cut watermelon out of the cooler and munched on that before taking off to PJs in the Village for lunch. The ribs are great!

I did post some more views from our balcony at the beginning of the Photoset as well as a couple other touristy things... in remembrance of Randall from back in the day.

Chris invited me to do a series of trails up in Sedona with him and Wally, and I thought that would be a good way to spend a Saturday morning.

An early start before the sun was up out of the Bell Rock Trailhead. It was chilly for sure...20 something. All three of us were feeling the cold for sure!

I have done the Courthouse Butte Loop and the trails around Bell Rock, but not the others he had loaded up. The early start gave the first part of the hike a little escape from the masses, but we still saw some hikers out there early on.

The Llama trail was a nice one as was the Little Horse. The area around the Chapel looks interesting. Gotta hit that area next time.

We made good time, as Wally was in front moving out. Holding back for Chris and I, no doubt, but we still knocked out 11 miles in about 4 hours. No major elevation or scary climbs on this one. Just some nice trails in a very scenic area.

On our way back, the crowds really started in. The trails were packed with hikers and mountain bikers. Poor Bell Rock was completely infested with tourists, climbing all over the place.

The trailhead parking lot was totally full when we returned. Some guy offered Chris $10 for his parking spot when we got back....ha ha. He found another one before we were finished loading up.

It always a good day hiking with Chris and Wally and this day was no exception.

This was plan B because we couldn't get a parking space to do Morning Glory Spire. I had no idea there was a write up for this but we went straight up and cliffed out. Then we went down a couple of layers and found a decent route up. This was fun. There was a guided group on top and another guy chillin near the top. Lots of people on the trails below.

this is the one i couldn't wait for. modified the Bruce/Joe loop by tagging on some excellent additional trail miles and circling around behind cathedral. there was a big storm front moving in that evening so i knew i was on the clock a little bit for this one.

started off messing around up on the beautiful bell rock. went up the lower chute and decided in the interest of time (ie storm) to call it there, for this trip. i will be back for the top one day. scrambled down and around on courthouse butte. took a minute to figure out the unmarked loop out to the rabbit ears. the way out is a bit of a rocky slog, but once you hit the high point, loop around to magnificent view of the rabbit ears and bring it home on the much more entertaining northern leg, this becomes a much more worthwhile excursion!

scenic traverse on llama and little horse over to chicken point for the next high yield part of the hike. views from chicken point are always wonderful. broken arrow is great, then the absolutely fantastic high on the hog and hog heaven trails. man i love these two trails. completed the loop around the mountains on hog wash, mystic and chapel trails. headed back to 179 then crossed under it on little horse and the surprisingly nice HT trails.

next up was probably my most anticipated part of the day looping over to, up/down, then around cathedral. the templeton trail is underrated in my opinion and the segment from HT to cathedral junction, i found to be lovely. this is when the weather really moved in. i contemplated bailing on going up/down cathedral since i've done it numerous times. instead i decided to just put on my bobby rockets and blast up and down. more templeton awesomeness to the creek, then short but sweet crossover on baldwin to the Hiline trail. Folks, we have another sedona winner with the Hiline Trail. completely awesome trail, with sections remniscent of the hogs/hangover. the weather was pretty crazy at this point so i had to keep it moving, but this was really outstanding. i had earlier notions of adding a few extra miles at the end with looping made in the shade and slim shady, but it was pretty clear it was time to call it a day. and i was getting sick of the wind at this point too. ha

outstanding big day out there, without that many people all things considered. my gps screwed up on me for a while on the little horse and broken arrow trails, so the numbers associated with my gps route are not right (a little too low, especially the elevation). for those interested, the route is good though.

Hiked the 5 road-to-rim trails on the east side of upper Oak Creek Canyon. Up and back down on Purtymun, Thomas Point and Telephone, then up Harding / north on the connector trail / down Cookstove. All are steep, well-constructed trails with scenery and big views. I expected more of a thrash on Purtymun but its in mostly good condition all the way to the rim, so it's clearly getting some use and unofficial maintenance.

Hit Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock on the way out of town, fun slickrock.

Stopped in Sedona on the way back from Flagstaff and took the daughter and dog for a quick hike up Bell Rock. She actually took better pictures that I did  I haven't been to Sedona in a year and I really love this place. The way all the colors come together here is amazing. This was a real easy trail and daughter and dog had no problem up. There were a lot of people on the trail today. I can't wait until I retire, also.

For all the times I've hiked in Sedona, I've never really hiked much in this area. I put together a loop, Joe tweaked it a bit, and we were off.

First up, getting to the top of Bell Rock. Joe picked a decent ascent route to the top. There are only a couple spots that make you think a bit. We had the top to ourselves. Great morning views of the area.

Video from the top :next: youtu.be/51Jch9Byq18

Next up, an area that's off the main drag. I've wanted to get a better view of the "Rabbit Ears" and found this unmarked loop on Satellite View that get's you close. We saw one mountain biker, walking her bike on the trail and that was it. A nice little change from the perfectly groomed Sedona main corridor trails.

Just before making it to Chicken Point, I lost Joe to a Yoga Class for a bit.

The High on the Hog and Hog Heaven Trails need to be put on your list if you are in this area. We were calling this the Hangover junior Trail. Great trail with great views.

After taking Joe to church, it was off to Cathedral Rock. The HT Trail and Templeton Trails are a worthy alternatives to reaching Cathedral Rock. Being one of the most popular areas in Sedona, it was jumping with all types. Including Infants, puppies, yoga pants and Grandmas.

I really enjoyed this loop with perfect weather in gods country.

Bell Rock
Hands down the highlight. Using 9L's posted route it was easy to decipher. Based on the tunnel through the scrub at the bottom and the register up top this place gets a lot of visitors.

Rabbit Ears
Heard of this 11 years ago and have been mildly curious. I prefer the north part of the loop over the south. Once is probably enough. It's cool you can see the ears driving south on I-17!

The Hogs
16 years ago I mountain biked Broken Arrow. Memories of so so kept it off my return list. The Hog trails are near perfect. A low key manicured version of Hangover Trail ( favorite ). Edgy trail through lots of cypress, need I say more. Thx to tibber/gecko for bringing these great trails to light.

Templeton Trail
Bruce put this hike together. I suggested the missing spice Cathedral Rock utilizing HT & Templeton to connect. Unexpectedly found out the connectors are decent hiking. When you aren't in the cypress you are surrounded by the distant red rock formations. This trail goes to Red Rock Crossing, I may have under estimated it's potential. Tough to give it a higher rating going under a hwy and with such other great choices nearby. Let's call it a high 3.9 of 5!

Synopsis
I enjoyed the entire hike. Sedona, the forest service or whoever has done a great job with most of the trails and signage. I'm not a fan of over networked trail systems like the cough north McDowells. It works very well in this spectacular land of red rock. Wonderful weather and friendly yoga enthusiast may have made this hike better than normal.

After a long day I went for a dusk stretchout to take in the views before heading home to the Valley. I just went for a ride around Courthouse Butte so this was a natural fit. Peaceful, just how it should be. There was a drone flying directly above Bell Road - fortunately that left after a few minutes. Nice colors, re-energized, and I was on my way home.

An afternoon loop around Courthouse was cut short with a mid-trip flat so I hit one of the shorter-trails back to call it a day. I got a new pump, which I soon learned how little I enjoy it :) , so after getting my body and mind out of whack taking forever to change my rear tube I felt satisfied in calling it a day and taking a stretch out walk around Bell. Gorgeous afternoon that turned to evening though...

Temps were in the 90s. Busy trail as always, things out a little as you get closer to the top.
Downloaded the GPX route to the top but still did not make it to the actual top. We started at North parking lot don't know if that makes a difference. Someday we will make it to the top. :)

The kids and I needed to go to Flagstaff for a family event so we left early and detoured through Sedona and played on Bell Rock. Made it most of the way to the top and they loved exploring and playing on the rocks. Then drove up Oak Creek Canyon and played by the creek. Great day.
