Ten by nine. The ridges were warm, the valleys cool and then it just got hot. As for bushwackiness, this route was relatively low-key by Supes standards. I've definitely done scratchier hikes within this wilderness. The official route was somewhat weird, but good enough to suggest the general way. Leaving Dutchman, we mostly stayed in the wash at first, which seemed much easier than 'literally' following the wacky black-dashed line. Also added on AZLumberjack's Peak 2891 Saddle for poos and giggles. : wink : Not too shabby.

We wanted a fairly short look that hit the Praying Hands, and pieced one together with the Praying Hands, Palmer Mine, and Massacre Falls loop. Section on the Massacure falls loop a bit after the praying hands faded out or we just lost it somehow so we ended up cutting the hike a bit short by taking another trail we were able to find back to the parking lot.

We started from First Water Trailhead once again, noting the continuing fall of water levels over the course of the past few weeks. But there was still enough, in places, to capture perfect reflection shots in the quiet morning. @John10s, has once again beat me to posting, so many details and photos are available in his triplog so I won't repeat much, if any.

Off trail, we did some improvising, and it's incredible how misleading the wider-spaced contour lines of planning can be compared to the raw, real ground truth! Ours was another "rehab" hike for my benefit this week; I'm not sure I'd recommend it for that, but it worked out.

Views are spectacular along this route. But what may have impressed me the most, besides the destination itself, were the questions that came to mind as we were climbing to the high point of the day, viewing from above a maze of trails. We saw relatively few other hikers, but many more than we anticipated. and we figured that we'd have company at the arch. But no one was there for a long time neither before nor after we were in the area! So...

What trails were those hikers on? We didn't see on our maps. And if those hikers didn't show up at the arch, where were they going? After all, what could be better than an arch??? We'll enjoy researching and returning to see what else this area has to offer!

With @TBoneKathy still recovering from a minor leg injury, we headed back to the Superstitions for another relatively short, easy hike. We decided on Massacre Falls Loop from First Water Trailhead, but instead of battling the crowds at the waterfall, our main destination was an off-loop hike over to Massacre Arch/Boulder.

First Water TH was busy when we arrived just after sunrise, but not as bad as I was expecting on a Saturday morning at the start of a long weekend. There was still some trickling water and pools in a few of the drainages and creek beds, but it's been drying out over the past few weeks. We left Dutchman ~1.5 miles into the hike and started following the creek bed and drainages toward Massacre Grounds. The bushwhacking wasn't too bad--I had the clippers out occasionally, trimming catclaw and branches out of the way, but it could have been a lot worse.

After leaving the drainage and clearing the pass, we paused for a break before connecting with the Massacre Falls trail, where we encountered the expected swarm of hikers. We passed on the falls and hiked north before leaving the trail to head toward the arch. That was the slowest part of the day, with thicker brush to contend with until we connected with the social trail and made our way up.

Getting up to the arch required another round of bushwhacking...with her leg still recovering, @TBoneKathy waited below while I headed up. I chose a less-than-ideal route and ended up trying to push through a wall of brush and bees before retreating and choosing a less contentious approach :). I wasn't sure if the pictures I'd seen of the arch and the balancing rock were zoomed-in shots taken from a distance, but I was pleased to see that it was easy to access the arch and go inside.

It ended up being a really nice spot--the arch was more like a short tunnel, and looking through it, the spires around Praying Hands are framed nicely directly below the balancing rock. It's a very scenic area, full of spires, hoodoos, and all kinds of weird rock formations--the views were well worth the scratches and bloodshed earned on the way up :).

[ youtube video ]

I eventually headed back down, and rather than bushwhacking back to the Massacre Falls trail and finishing the route for Massacre Falls Loop, we hiked to Crosscut TH and followed the road back to First Water. Not a lot of miles today, but the weather was fantastic, we explored some new off-trail areas, and the arch and balancing rock exceeded expectations.

Knew it would be wet but I had no idea. Tons of cars parked on the side road at 7AM not daring enter the horse lot (aka demolition derby mud track). First Water crossings were knee high. The side drainage which is probably dry most of the year was a flowing creek the entire way up. Favorite part of the hike was when we finally got up towards the saddle and away from all the bushwacking and soaked feet. Did not see a real trail once I left the Dutchman all the way up to the Massacre Falls trail. Followed the masses to the falls and soaked in the experience at selfieville. I have never been underneath when it was flowing so much before, it was actually pretty cool. Passed by an open mine on the very lightly used but super flat and easy path back to First Water. May or may not have done some laps before we headed home.

Started up to the Ridgeline from Carney Springs TH. Major elevation gain for the first 3 miles. Ridgeline trail to Flatiron is in good shape and easy to follow. There a 3 technical spots with a little climbing but nothing too crazy. Spectacular views the entire time.

Dropped down to Massacre Falls on a super steep and sketchy use trail. Cairns generally keep you on the right track but many are superfluous and some are poorly placed. Took an off trail route over to Peralta Trail which was quite the bushwhack but I suppose that was expected. Dutchman Trail to East Boulder Canyon for the night - love spending the night in this little canyon.

Peralta trail out in the morning and some road walking back to the truck.

Water: First Water Creek - flowing, O' Grady Canyon - flowing, East Boulder Canyon - flowing , Peralta Canyon - small pools

Had to go out and check one of our favorite photo-op destinations, didn't let us down, was still there in all it's glory.
Last time here was to icy to get up to the Arch. While taking a break at the Arch we watched the rescue helicopter working
his magic on the Base Jumper. I showed the route as one way, this route is the most direct as any we've done. Put a few cairns
up along the way. Hope you enjoy as much as we have.

I have always wanted to do a Reverse Flatiron, but wanted a more off trail hike. I decided to connect the First Water Creek route with the RF and created an excellent off-trail adventure. I left First Water TH at 6:15 am and headed up the Dutchman Trail to First Water creek. I followed the creek drainage to the Massacre Grounds trail; unfortunately, at that point my GPS lost all satellite signals for about ten minutes which resulted in an erroneous ten mile segment up to Canyon Lake and back on my GPS track and delayed my start on the RF. Once GPS signals returned, I headed up the RF from Massacre Grounds and with the help of multiple cairns and my now accurate GPS successfully completed the route. There was some scrambling which slowed me down. I headed up to Peak 5024, then over to the Flatiron to consort with the crowds, then slowly made my way down Siphon Draw. I connected with the Jacobs Crosscut trail and followed it to First Water road, then walked two miles on the road back to my vehicle, completing my twelve hour odyssey. An excellent off trail adventure for the first half; I really didn't enjoy descending Siphon Draw and it was the least enjoyable portion of the hike. In the future, I think I would return the way I came up and connect to one of the trails that returns to First Water Road.

Drove to the First Water TH and hiked the Dutchman trail until I came to First Water Creek. I followed the creek up and then took a cross-country route to intersect the Massacre Falls trail and up to the Falls. The falls had plenty of water and after a while I shared it with four people on horseback. Then on down the Massacre Grounds trail until I made a right turn at the Wilderness Boundary fence and hiked the old road to the trail connecting the two parking lots and on to the main parking lot. I got rained on early in the hike, but it was a good day. First Water Creek is not too brushy and easy to follow.

I decided to try out the Massacre Falls Loop. I dragged my mom and her husband along for the hike. We started at the first water trail head at about 6:30 in the morning. There was a nice breeze that morning and it was clear skies. It was around the 60's I believe when we started. We got off the track a few times. We added about a mile and a half because of that. With my mad navigation skills we found our way back and safely to Massacre Falls. When we got to massacre falls there was not much water running off it but it was enough to make the trip worth it. On our way back to the car we found a old car door randomly in the middle of the desert near the old jeep road we were on  . We finished the hike around 12 o clock. It was getting hot by that time so we were glad to make it to the car when we did.

Nick, Bob, and I hiked the Massacre Falls Loop on Easter Sunday.

With help of the official GPS track for this loop, route finding was straightforward. Without it, I think it would have been pretty hard. Even with the GPS, I didn't always pay as close attention as I ought to have, overshooting several turns.

catclaw and other pokey brush turned out to be less of a problem than I expected. I had dressed for it though, wearing long pants and a long sleeved shirt. My choice of footwear was less than ideal for the grass as I spent a few hours picking grass seeds out of my socks and shoes when I returned.

The area around the fall was damp, but the waterfall wasn't flowing.

We still saw a lot of wildflowers and an awful lot of dried grass which could soon be a fire hazard if it isn't already.

Nick pronounced this hike a "Curate's Egg", by which he means, "Good, in parts." With that I agree.

Wendy was in town and I had no one to play with so she obliged. From a hike earlier in the week she had witnessed some big storms passing over the Supes so she got waterfalls on her mind. Well the Supes don't have a lot of accessible water falls for me except thru pics (i.e. Reavis Falls) so we went thru several alternate ideas before she chose this one. She didn't want to face the throngs of people on the trails so this fit her bill.
There wasn't a lot of beta on this hike but I put together all the other routes should we decide to deviate along the way. Let's just say the first third of the hike was amAZing and we had a great time on our way to Massacre Grounds. The middle third of the hike was certainly NOT a walk in the park let alone open desert. And the last third on the tributaries would have been fine if we hadn't just come thru the middle third :pout:

So we started from the Horse Lot and from the Dutchman Trail took the first turn west into First Water Tributary 2947 (maybe should have done that Loop). We were delighted to see water right away. And water most of the rest of the way until we left the Tributary. There were lots of bedrock areas too and of course the flora was putting on a show. I can't tell you how delightfully surprised we were to be hiking in this tributary. The Brittlebush on the hillsides was nice along with the various rock formations. And believe it or not, two gals happened to catch and pass us. They were the only folks we would see until we got to the Massacre Falls Trail and after Massacre Grounds to Dutchman Trail.

We took a short break in the shade by one of the many pools of water we had seen already. We were near the mouth of this canyon where the water dried up a bit and the going got a little tougher. We did see a trail go off to the left but it didn't seem like it was going the direction we wanted so we continued in the drainage for a while and we saw another trail go off to the left. I figured it was the horse trail as it would be hard for horses to walk up this tributary in places. We found the other side of that trail that headed west and decided since the drainage was being much more difficult we would use the trail. THAT was the right decision and I encourage others to do this instead of following the official route.

We slinked around and toward Massacre Falls trail and sure enough we saw quite a few more people here. We had lunch on top of the Grounds and enjoyed our view far and wide. There was a lot of gold in them thar hills too. Little did we know, this would be the end of our joy today. So we followed the trail toward Massacre Falls before we came to our left hand turn on what looked like a trail; it ended pretty abruptly. We contoured for awhile and were worried about cliffing out as we needed to get across a deep drainage. However, cliffing out would NOT have been an issue and we should have continued and then crossed more where the route did that we were following. Once we got across we had to go thru so much brush to get to a somewhat clearer area to hike.

I would say if you are going to follow the official route from Massacre Grounds, stick very close to it if you can; and that isn't easy but it does look a little clearer than what we did based on the satellite photo. A little ways later we hooked back on to the official route and pretty much stuck to it. We still hit many walls of trees, brush or cactus that we would have to wander a bit to find the path of least resistance. I felt like we were "wallyfracking" there for a bit. I don't know how he does that without wearing out much sooner.

All I can say is thank goodness it wasn't hot as this cross desert trek wasn't easy; especially when we had to push thru brush uphill : rambo : . And of course, it is snake season so Wendy managed to scare up two rattlers. One was rather docile and stayed under a bush while the other one we would find, just before dipping into a drainage, went on and on. It decided to slither down where we were going so we had a little detour.

Once into the drainage we took a much needed break. We wondered what open desert really meant because this didn't feel like it. Now mind you, I told Wendy I didn't think we'd be out more than 4 hours. It was now 3PM, we started a little after 8:30. Well it took us four hours just to top out at Massacre Grounds via the Tributary. OOPS! And we still have 4 miles to go with 3 of those miles thru these two drainages/tributaries. So off we went; rather glad to be in the tributary and out of the so-called open desert. The drainage/tributaries had its challenges too with all the water, the downclimbs, the filling up with bushes and such but it had its open times where you could breath normally for about 5 minutes.

This side didn't have as much water as the first tributary but there was one section where the pools were deep and big. Getting around them caused us to have to figure out the best route and sometimes we both would do it differently. I tried to film as much as possible but there was a lot of time the camera stayed tucked away. We finally arrived at the First Water Falls [ photo ] I had last been to with snakemarks back in 2009. It was dry and the little pool had very little water in it. I knew we would run into some catclaw as we made it back toward the Dutchman Trail but it wasn't too bad. And then as we got closer to the Dutchman we had to negotiate a lot more water so we veered right. Soon enough we finally hit the trail; it felt so good!

We ran into two snake hunters near the junction with First Water. They had seen gila monsters earlier in the day. We finally made it back to Tonto Jr and then went and had dinner on the patio at Mammoth SteakHouse. Thx to Wendy for leading us through that; it made it easier for me so I didn't have to think as much. For example, she said to me when we were in the middle of this trying to guesstimate where we needed to go further ahead, "See that saguaro out there"... I did; it was pretty far away. A little while later I asked Wendy, "where is that saguaro". She hesitated and I looked next to me and there it was ](*,) .

Yep, the Supes proved their might once again but once again, we survived, altho our bruised and punctured legs might beg otherwise. (We were wearing pants.) Film at 11.

As my very thorough partner Tibber said in her earlier description of this date, it was a mixed bag of wonder (oh! how beautiful! and wonder (I wonder why the pumpkin anyone would want to do this). However, it did meet my primary goals of getting us away from the crowds of Superstition front country trails and seeing some really beautiful desert.

The initial walk up to Massacre Grounds was really spectacular. The canyon was full of water, wildflowers and views. I'd never seen the grounds before, so that was a real treat to me. Then we descended off the east side and the desert took over again. It was thorny, brushy and rugged - everything the Superstitions should be. There were times when walking on top of the brush was easier than through it. The great thing about navigating in the desert - the landmarks are always right there...not hiding behind trees.

The descent through the First Water tributaries was delightful, and might have been less stressful if we'd planned the timing better. However, I definitely agree that the direction we did this hike (counterclockwise) was the right choice. It would have been much tougher climbing up some of the pour-offs in these tributaries.

Overall, I'd do it again, but I'd be more prepared. However - when I think of how many times I've said this over the years, I just have to smile. Being prepared...maybe a little overrated! :D

Time to get this off our Bucket List. Thanks to Vincent and gmaclachian's routes we had a big idea where we went wrong in the past attempts. Thought we were all set, but then decided we wanted a few more miles and do an off route extension after we topped out behind the Hoodoos, hooking up with the ridgeline trail via a small saddle we had spotted previously. Parked at the second parking spot off 1st water and up we went. All went well, 3/4th of the way up we startled a couple of : rein : but to quick for a pic. Got up and over the Hoodoos East of 5024 and spotted the saddle we wanted to go down and connect with the ridgeline trail back to Flatiron. This is such a beautiful hike and especially up on top past the 1st set of Hoodoos my camera wouldn't stop clicking :M2C: :D . Started down and ran in to a wall of trees and bushes, couldn't go thru or under as they were really thick. ](*,) Backed out and worked our way up and around the North side of the Thicket. Hooked up with the ridgeline and up and over connecting with the Reverse Flatiron Route. Decided not to head over to Flatiron due to setting sun. Headed down Siphon Draw to Jacob's Crosscut and headed North to parking lot. Got dark on us and missed a sign , we ended up over at the Cholla Campground area, all in all was a great hike, but happy I was able to cross it off my Bucket List....

Just another potential Massacre Grounds Loop.. While working the First Water TH as a Forest Service Volunteer, I'm often asked about the Massacre Grounds Trailhead, which is now non-existent. I tell them that they can drive back to the Crosscut TH and begin their hike on the new trail that connects with the old one at the original TH adding about two miles to the trek.

"Can we do it from here?" Well, yes, but it's not a very friendly trail with lots of brush and few trails to follow. So I decided to check out the possibilities. I have looked at the route many times on the TOPO maps so it shouldn't be all that bad :D

My route took me down the Dutchman Trail to the first unnamed creek crossing. This flowage is actually from Massacre Falls and other drainages around the Massacre Grounds. The creek was still flowing intermittently thanks to the rains of last weekend but was easy to get around the wet spots.

The canyon itself is narrow and the sides steep enough that trails don't exist and you must follow the creek bed, rock hopping as you go but after a while it gets pretty old stumbling from rock to rock. Finally the canyon opens up and you are presented with a view of the "Wall" alongside the Massacre Grounds ahead and behind is a great view of Four Peaks.

The Catsclaw was everywhere and I paid my dues in fresh blood to be able to continue on. Before long I was able to get out of the wash and leave the thick brush behind and I challenged a large rock outcropping to gain elevation and see what was around. Cool views from my high perch and I saw a cliff face to the East of the Massacre "Wall". The cliff was at the head of a deep draninage and below the steep approach to the mountain and there was a strip of green brush along a "shelf" mid-cliff.

As I approached the cliff looking for a way to get to the shelf, I could barely make out an alcove at the far end of the shelf. I couldn't tell if it was natural or part of an old ruin but it looked worth a closer look-see :? Couldn't find any trails leading up, so it was just me and the scree :scared: The recent rains made every step a treacherous slipping experience so it was climb-slip-grab for something to keep from going back down.

I made it to the base of the cliff where the brush was growing and was able to squeeze through until I reached the end of the trail. "Cliff-Out" but I could see the alcove now and tell that it didn't amount to much, surely not a habitable cave and what had looked like a stone wall was just a natural part of the cliff :(

Got some photos from the shelf then came the getting back down part of the exploration. Not a pretty sight but I made it back to some solid hiking ground and headed back down towards the Massacre flowage. I had my fill of Catsclaw so I opted for a route that would (should) take me back to the upper First Water Creek. I headed uphill for a saddle not too far away and as I broke over the top, I could see that I was in the drainage for First Water Creek.

The storm from this past September has taken out a lot of the trails so it was back to the rock hopping until I finally reached the Dutchmans Trail once again. A quick hike back to the TH and get rid of the pack and gear then the usual cool one with peanuts as I stowed everything in the truck.

There could be possibilities for this loop, but there's a lot of brush to contend with and the stream bed don't make for a good trail.

Okay so the original plan was to go to Massacre Grounds. The map that I had showed a "target shooting sign" side road of the main First Water trailhead. I drove this road up and down several times and never found a driveable off road... so what did we do... we hiked from Jacob's Crosscut out into the middle of nowhere... that's what. After pulling the prickly cactus from our kneecaps... we decided to take a leisurely stroll up First Water. We made it halfway and turned around. One day we will complete the actual Massacre Falls loop.

NASTY is the one word that describes the central portion of this hike!

Other than a little bit muddy the Massacre Falls trail was great. The falls was flowing fairly well seeing as it was about 24 hours after the rain stopped. This was the first visit for me to the falls. Any waterfall in the western supes is a treat. Then I decided to return using the loop back to the First Water TH.

Once I got to the dutchman trail, again other than being a bit muddy it was fine. All the streams were flowing. The walk back to the crosscut parking lot from the first water lot was fine, not much traffic.

But the area between these two sections is hard to describe in a language acceptable for the whole family. Just nasty is as close as I can come. The entire length was cholla (teddybear, staghorn and other types), prickly pear, catclaw etc. There was always something grabbing, tearing or poking at me. I don't think I ever did more than 3 steps in a straight line. Just about every step was a different elevation in an attempt to get around all the nasty pokey things.

I'd rate the Massacre Falls trail as a 4, really beautiful scenery, the sun was just coming up as I was getting some elevation. Along with a pretty good trail, what more could you want. But the portion of the loop over to the dutchman would have to be a zero or maybe a negative 4. I won't attach my GPS file on this one as I wouldn't want anyone to follow my path.
