Same idea as last summer with two basic goals: hike the length of Gaddes and Burnt Canyons and find a better route down from West Rim to Powerline. With the cold front coming and going the day before, it seemed like a good day for water in the creeks and clouds above and below View Point Trail. Ended up super good timing and maybe the best day I've spent on Mingus. Started at Mescal Tank with North Mingus.

North Mingus and View Point had been trimmed back since the summer, so rain and snow melt on the trailside brush was mostly a nonissue. A little muddy but nothing too bad. North Mingus a mix of forest and views. Clouds below to the north were even better once on View Point. Walked above, below, and inside them until topping out on Mingus.

Quarter inch of snow on top of Mingus Mountain that had mostly melted by sundown. Gaddes Canyon had a trickle in the snowy top of the trail and below the road on Black Canyon Trail. Once into Black and Burnt Canyons the flow picked up. Not too strong but more than a trickle. Clouds rolled overhead the whole way. Burnt canyon is mellow with a better and better forest heading up. The upper mile or two is picture perfect open ponderosa forest. The middle section had some smooth, rocky sections that are awesome with water flowing. The going is relatively easy the whole way, not much to maneuver around or bushwhack through.

Diverted from the end of Burnt Canyon up to the tank North of Kendall Peak. On the way noticed a pair of graves with a metal sign that read "Ram Dog" from which a grey collar hung. Walked the road with some corner cutting to Yaeger Cabin Trail. Passed the only person I saw all day on Yaeger Canyon and then commenced the mile or so roadwalk to Butterfly. Straight through the woods from Middle To West Rim and then over to the edge of the mountaintop.

I took a ridge NW off the very northern tip of the mountain. It was a way better track down than last time, and though a moderate bushwhack I was on Powerline in twenty minutes. On the way down enjoyed views of Humphreys and Sedona that shine in the last couple hours of the day. Straightforward trip back down. On the day saw the one person, two coyotes, a half dozen deer, and lion tracks near the upper Black Canyon TH and Mingus Lake.

Took the Harem up to Prescott National Forest to see some fall colors. Mingus seemed to be the best option and we were rewarded with the start of the oak's color change.

Attempted to loop Gaddes Canyon with the entirety of Burnt Canyon since I'd never seen either running with water. Ended up cutting it short and skipped the roughest portions of Burnt Canyon. Probably started too far away, but I hadn't stretched my legs in a while, and I was curious to try descending off the mountain from West Rim to Powerline without a trail. Started from around Mescal Tank and went clockwise at 5am.

Soaking wet on North Mingus and View Point. Little overgrown on both, got started and stayed wet through Gaddes. Only a little mud round the east side of the mountain. Sweet sunrise views over a sea of clouds settled in the Verde Valley. Clouds were sliding up Mingus behind me by the time I topped out on View Point.

The short stretch of Gaddes Canyon I did was the muddiest part of the day. Water running down the trail in parts. Got into Gaddes Canyon and onto Gaddes Two with the unfamiliar roar of water. Never paid attention to how many creek crossings there are before. There are many, and they were rather wide and difficult. Longest trip down Gaddes before and one of the most delightful.

Had planned on taking Black Canyon Trail down to Black Canyon and following Burnt Canyon back up. It was already looking pretty stormy on the Mingustop, and clouds were pushing their way up Black Canyon and over the ridge. Decided the views were better on the road despite the water in the canyon, plus I was worried how rough it would be in spots along the lower end of Burnt Canyon with the water running high. Wanted to avoid that frustration and was trying not to descend off the mountain in a late morning storm. So I cut the corner and took the road past upper Black Canyon and climbed down into Burnt Canyon from a campsite. It's definitely beautiful any time of year but with the brown stream of water flowing down in the wide draw through the open pines, and especially on a stormy day, it was real special. Easy travel from there up, successfully cut out the bushwhacking.

Roads and woods to Yaeger Cabin Trail. First time on that one and was impressed. Runs through the forest below the road. Nice connector. Best not on a weekend with Mingus' car traffic. Took that to Yaeger Canyon and up the road to Butterfly. Cut the thirty feet up from the road and followed it along the harvest boundary. Thinning going on east by the hang-gliding area. In retrospect, I think Butterfly, Middle, and West Rim are closed, as well as the hang-gliding area. Took Middle for a couple minutes then up through the woods to West Rim. West Rim is not marked for thinning. Nice to see the forest thinned, but's also nice to know at least one corner will be left alone.

Got to the edge of Mingus and it was all clouds and fog. Could not see a thing. Walked the edge until I thought I found a wide enough game trail to descend. It was steep, wet, muddy, disorienting, and totally rad. Bounced around the mountainside and was lucky not to cliff out. Trails here and there. Moderate bushwhack. Only 600 feet down, will try a ridge next time. Made it to Powerline/Bug Hollow and had an uneventful and wonderfully cloudy walk back to the car. Didn't see anyone all day besides some logging trucks. Many deer. 60s-70s. Lots and lots of mushrooms. Imagine the mountain will dry up quick.

Tracie and I had Geronimo's Cabin on our radar screen for over a year now, and we decided at long last to go check it out. I had reviewed some triplogs and maps, and decided to do a big loop that encompassed the Yeager Canyon Loop; also included are a couple of short out-and-back side trips to Kendall Peak and Geronimo's Cabin.

We hiked on several trails and roads, including Little Yeager Canyon Trail #533; Kendall Camp Road 105; Cherry Trail 132; Forest Road 413; Forest Road 9003T; Yeager Cabin Trail #111; Old Dump Trail #530; and Yeager Canyon Trail #28. We also did a bit of off-trail hiking, mostly getting to and from Kendall Peak -- this was some of the easiest off-trail hiking that I have done.

We started the hike at a pullout on 89A, where the Little Yeager Canyon Trail #533 and Yeager Canyon Trail #28 meet. We took the Little Yeager Canyon Trail #533 and then took a right on Kendall Camp Road 105 for a short distance. Then we went on a fun, easy off-trail excursion to the north side of Kendall Peak, and went up the north slope of the peak to the summit. After descending down the way we came up, we took a logging road to Cherry Trail 132, and took it west for a ways until we went off-trail to get to FR 413, very near to where FR 9003T starts. Then we went up to Geronimo's Cabin; retraced our steps back to FR 413, and made our way to the start of Yeager Cabin Trail #111. We then took #111 up to Yeager Canyon Trail #28, and took it back to the TH.

As for Old Dump Trail #530: my map, the HAZ GPS track, and the description of the trail on the Prescott National Forest website all indicated that Trail #530 ran from Trail #28 to FR 413. However, the signage for Trail #530 has the trail running from Trail #111 to FR 413. I took this revised Old Dump Trail from #111 to FR 413 and back. I also went up Trail #28 to where the Old Dump Trail junction was supposed to be, and did not see a trail or a trail sign. I am not sure why Trail #530 has apparently been moved.

At 7,088' Kendall Peak certainly isn't the highest in the area, but it had some nice 360 degree views nonetheless. I enjoyed seeing snow covered peaks in the Bradshaws. I noticed at least 3 HAZers had signed the trip logbook.

Geronimo's Cabin, with its logs vertical instead of horizontal, is definitely unique. The vertical logs makes it blend in with and mirror the environment

We saw around a dozen turkeys, but that was the only wildlife that we saw.

I really like hiking on Mingus, and this was a very enjoyable hike!

Yeager Canyon Trail #28
6 years since Bruce and I hiked this one. The trail is very well maintained.

Gaddes Canyon Trail Two (Old) (added 2020-02-11)
Based on comments in nonot's [ triplog ] we hiked or paralleled this mythical 2 mile out-n-back. For sleuths' sake of ever figuring it out I moved the trailhead from FR501A to trail 502 which hikebot does have a track posted based on gov gis data.

Gaddes Canyon #110
Short leg to make the loop work. Never tire of this one.

Gaddes Canyon Two Trail #9037
Long standing fav, prefer up. Dry, no wildflowers.

Black Canyon Trail #114
Almost felt like cheating since we just hiked the nicest upper end. Columbine patch. Box Elders stood out with their bright translucent green leaves.

Offtrail Black & Burnt Canyons
1.5 mi portion we did on a 17 mi loop Aug `14. The most notable pools of water all day. Bring your own, this canyon travels easy from all the cow trails-of-use.

Ash Canyon Trail #539
Only 1.5 mi, perhaps the best part of it too.

Yeager Cabin Trail #111
Whopping 0.5mi of this gem. 9Lee linking at it's best!

Little Yaeger Canyon
Looked forward to this the most as somehow it never made the mix. Heading in I couldn't figure why Preston mentioned...
Reversing your route back down Little Yaeger Canyon is the most difficult option.
Crystal clear now. I barely made it down with lots of help. The sword was double edged as the guys spent the previous hour suggesting changing this final leg to a nearby trail... lol
I'd still go up this canyon since I forgot to keep an eye out for the Aspens. Forget descending until memory fades!

Synopsis
Enjoyed the loop once. Not itchin to do it again. Mingus is my fav so neva say never but I'd reverse it. Good to see Chums jump in on this one. 18% of the hike was breaks =)

For some reason, I had never once dipped my hiking wick into any of the trails on Mingus Mountain, so this looked like a good introduction and an excuse to get to cooler elevations without driving too far.

The sun made it a bit warm toward the end, but the trails were great, and the off-trail sections were mostly manageable too! A patch of poison ivy made me do a few ballerina steps of avoidance.

Deliverance Cabin was one of the most rugged I've seen, and in an odd location. Whoever built it was apparently not a fan of being found. The way down was an improvisational mess. We enjoyed finding the old trail tread on the way back up.

The high point on the day was Kendall Peak, which somebody promised me was a unique and a peak. It's a good thing somebody added it about 6 minutes ago as a cya. :)

Little Yeager turned into a bit of an adventure in the heat of the afternoon sun, but despite slow travel, it was actually a nice change of pace to add to the mix for the day.

I'll have to explore some more of this little mountain sometime!

I ran circles around the other two, racking up a few extra miles and elevation too.

Joe had us up in the Mingus area again to hit some old favorites, look for some stuff and hit some new areas.

We started on the well groomed 1500' climb up Yeager Canyon Trail. Once up top, on FR9003P we stumbled onto the remains of an old cabin structure. Pipe in the structure, suggested there might be a spring in the area. After a bit of a search, we have a new named spring.

Next, the adventure of finding a way off the rim. Chums found us a break in wall to get down to our next search. Geronimo's cabin had been on my list since @PrestonSands was there years ago. This is a place that you could walk right past, if you were not within 50' of it. Gernomio's Cabin was built by Geronimo Pena. He worked as a woodcutter for 37 years, supplying the community of Jerome with firewood. Born in 1877, he passed away in the cabin in 1957 of heart disease. His boots are still supposed to be there, but I did not notice them.

Leaving the cabin we found an old use trail. We lost it and found again, along with the remnants of another unmarked near dry spring.

Back on the familiar Gaddes Canyon #110, Gaddes #9037 and Black Canyon #110, we turned into Black Canyon/Burnt Canyon. Bovine traffic made our travel much easier.

Next up was Ash Canyon #539. We found a shady spot for lunch, before heading up to Kendall Peak.
It was a bit of a huffer for me on that climb in the heat. The views are totally worth it.

We finished off the hike exploring the off trail Little Yaeger Canyon. Slow and brushy in spots, with a few down climbs that we practiced Safety First.

Good times, Thanks for driving Chums, great hiking with you again.

Now that I found out this website can track all your hikes together and my wife and I can see how many miles we hiked this year, elevation gained, etc we are going to update all our hikes on here if possible. We hiked the Little Yeager Trail # 533, Yeager Cabin Trail, and Yeager Canyon Trail loop back on March 20th. The weather was in the 50's and on the northern slopes there was still some patches of snow which was fun to play with for my dog Riley! The loop trail was fun and it was nice to see all new terrain the whole hike considering we are mostly used to out and back hikes. Very pretty hike with great views but besides that nothing too spectacular. We both agreed we were glad to hike it and it was fun but wouldn't need to make a trip back anytime soon. Worth noting that the whole area seemed very dry sadly and the only water to be found was in Haywood Canyon upstream a ways. (It was dry once we initially crossed it on the little yeager trail # 533 but was flowing upstream on the yeager canyon trail. Love the Black hills and will no doubt be back this summer in the area to escape the heat!

think we found the spring even though it didn't match the maps. Appeared to be dripping slightly, but the whole area seemed to have had a dry winter

Was looking for a moderate walk to do before a visit to Jerome with my wife, son and his dog. This fit the bill! Nice trails and a nice walk with some moderate AEG. A GPS track for the loop was useful since there are a few choices which might be confusing. Walked the loop CCW...probably best.

Jerome was in full Saturday Fall afternoon glory. Lunch at Bobby D's Barbecue was excellent and very dog friendly.

Took my hiking harem up to Mingus to do the Yeager Loop this morning as posted by Joe Bartels. Trails were in great shape, easy to follow and easy to read signs at the trail intersections. I parked at the single sized space at the intersection of Trail #28 and #533 and did the loop in the clockwise direction. There is a much larger parking area just up the road towards Jerome with a short trail across an old bridge with access to trail #28. Cool start in the upper 50's and plenty of tall tree throughout the whole hike to provide shade. Nice views of Yeager canyon on the way up and again into Prescott Valley on the way back down. Spent some time exploring the old settlement foundations at the end of #533 before returning to the truck. We took a spin up to the handglider launch after the hike, but no jumpers today. Stopped at Blue Hills Cafe for some super treats on the way back to Phoenix. Great short 7k elevation hike only an hour from Carefree hwy and I-17.

Off at about 6:15PM on a lovely summer evening. I did the loop in a clockwise fashion, heading up #28 in 37 minutes, which was pretty much shaded the whole way. I jogged/ran a good portion of the flats on #111. It appears some trees have been cleared in a section about half a mile from the dirt road. This was the same section that I came across a herd of cows and some deer. The side of the road where #111 feeds into has been given some attention, where a series of large plop rocks have been laid. The #533 sign on a tree is more noticeable now than in the past as well. Beautiful waning sunlight coming down #533. Nobody else on the trail except an archer at the trailhead area.

This was a nice hike from 2 weeks back that I went on with the "Friends Hiking and Camping Club". Thanks to Rich who led the hike, we started the hike at the north end of Trailhead 28, the high point, and hiked counterclockwise to Little Yeager Canyon Trail #533 and then the Yeager Cabin Trail #111. We finished our hike by hunting for Geronimo's Cabin -- Geronimo Pena that is, a "wood cutter" that logged in the Mingus Mountain area from 1920 to 1957. Next time I'm up in Prescott I'll do a little research at the Sharlot Hall Museum to find more info on Geronimo Pena.

The loops of 111, 28, and 533 is a fine loop. The CCC history makes it interesting. Those guys knew how to build a trail. Not too steep and switchbacks where needed.

The Yeager Mine Trail is a closed old jeep rd, and when the temperatures hit 100 at the bottom, my body couldn't take that heat, so I crawled back out and called it a day.

Did the Yeager Canyon Loop counter clockwise from 89A. Nice weather; just a couple of hikers and a couple of mountain bikers.

Off at around 3PM. Up #28, across #111, up the road and down #533. Got a little off course at the #111 and #533 interchange, strategically wandering around in the forest until I strategically hit the fence, then following the fence each direction until I strategically hit the gate. Followed the trail back to the road for future reference and to see the error of my ways. That area is a bit tricky if you don't know what to look for. It was nice in the sun the first half of the hike, but a little chilly the last hour. Heading down, I could see snow falling over the Bradshaws and Granite Mountain. Carried 50 ounces, but only drank about 10 due to the lower temperatures.

It was nice to be back on Mingus Mountain. I headed up #28 and reached #111 in 36 minutes. Jogged pretty much the entire way from there, hitting the next junction 25 minutes later. Brought it home on #533 in under 25 minutes. Pretty overcast the entire hike, making for comfortable temperatures. In contrast to the Canyon, didn't see another soul the entire way.
