It was a pretty windy and cool day. It was a bit more rocky than I remembered.

A leisurely hike to Shaka and Wave Caves via Lost Goldmine Trail.
Opted to do the approach from Lost Goldmine Trail rather than Carney Springs - Carney Springs Trailhead looked to be nearly full as we drove past on our way to the nearly empty (aside from one other vehicle) Lost Goldmine trailhead.

The lost goldmine trail is easy to follow, and is a nice wander through the low desert, though it does see cow and horse traffic (and has associated leavings as a result). The trail crosses the Carney Springs Trail at a post. Turning to follow the Carney Springs Trail, the trail eventually hits a fork marked with a rock and a spray painted arrow pointing left (the direction that would be taken if heading up to Wave Cave). We went right and headed up canyon to have a look at Shaka Cave (which we overshot, but quickly figured out our mistake when turning to look back down canyon). After a brief break in the shade of Shaka, we headed back down, followed what we thought might be a use trail to cross cut between the two forks (it eventually disappeared as it got close to joining the Carney Springs trail) - headed back up canyon towards Wave Cave.

While there was no company on the trail to Shaka Cave, there were a number of other hikers (and a few dogs) on the way up to Wave Cave. The trail is steep and scrambly in sections. There were several folks inside the Wave Cave on arrival, including one individual who disregarded what I assumed is proper etiquette (get your photo of the interesting feature/view and then allow others to do the same). We dawdled in the cave for a longer snack break than anticipated, waiting for our chance to get photos of the unique wave feature.

On our exit, there were still a number of folk headed up to see the cave. Definitely worth a visit to see the unique feature, but not a hike to seek solitude.

2024-08-28 ** UPDATE **

PCSO got back with me and SAR has determined that it was a false alarm and freely abandoned. They could not find evidence of foul play (nor did I see any). Also, there have been no missing persons reports in that area of Pinal. That's actually great news. The FS will be removing the items. I offered to pack everything out as trash, but they want to do it.

This trip was posted in a popular public hiking group last week with a small delay in getting it here. I’m adding it because the documentation could be important. Obviously if any HAZ members have information about this, please contact the authorities. Feel free to skip to paragraph 4 for the main story.

I took a hot weather trip to Carney Springs to look around. Temps were earlier in 80s and later 100s. Slightly cloudy with a promise of rain, but that didn’t happen. I actually probably would have run around like a school kid if it had rained. I love the rain in the open Superstitions. There is normal drying everywhere especially in the surface areas and of course greener in the channels and canyons in the Superstition Mountains. Since I know the area so well, I can document that at least 2 significant Saguaros recently fell.

There was one SUV at Carney Springs lot, and no other cars at the Lost Goldmine East lot where I parked. It is typical this time of year when many choose not to hike locally due to the dangers of heat. I was in no danger and no hurry working my way up to Carney Springs. I took a turn on the Shaka Cave trail and kept an eye out for invasive globe chamomile, Stinknet. I found and bagged a few dry stalks. It has not entirely invaded the upper canyon yet but, sigh, it’s just a matter of time before it takes over.

There was an abandoned tent in the cave. It was very ordinary looking and zipped up like someone had been camping. I peeked through the top and could see a clear layer of dust covering the insides. I committed a cardinal sin and checked AllTrails reviews and discovered that people had seen the tent in the cave over a month earlier, but had done nothing about it. I did look for blood. I did look for bullet casings. I did smell for decomposition. I saw nothing like that. Knowing that people sometimes disappear in the mountains, I decided to look inside. I took extra pics just in case, but there was no sign of foul play. I found various possessions notably a backpack.

Inside the tent was a cold compress and ointment, a nice tent light, tent stakes and cover, but no trash indicating that anyone had been living there more than a night. There was no water and no food, no bottles, or food wrappers. I found no identification or receipts or anything that would give clue to who had left it. My first thought was that someone had just been too lazy or tired to pack it out. I carefully examined the pack and took more photos. Inside the pack were several (looked like brand) new full size spiritual books. One was an “Ethiopian Bible” and the other book as the “Encyclopedia of Last and Rejected Scriptures.” Someone appeared to be on a spiritual journey. There were also charge cables in the side pocket. No name or writing was in either book.

I put everything back and zipped it back up and went up the canyon to see if I found anything else. Don’t judge the GPS speed or anything as I was taking my time slow visual searching. The waterfall was dry as expected without monsoon rain and there were no other sings of people on that upper trail. I took some more photos and passed two sets of people on the way down. Collected a bit more stinknet, which is easy to see dry because of the bright yellow color. I also took the short bypass trail that goes from Camp Carney back connecting over to the Wave Cave trail. There was nothing there either. It was warming up so I headed back to LGME.

Driving home I decided that I should report the tent to LE. Probably just wilderness trash, but just in case. I contacted Mesa Ranger District and Pinal County Sheriffs Office. Then I posted it to a couple hiking groups that I am in. I found out that one person had document the tent being there a full 2 months earlier. Another had reported seeing a sleeping bag about a month ago, but it was no loner there. Wow a lot of people had a lot to say about it. Mostly people were supportive, but some felt like I just rolled up on somebody’s campsite and invaded their privacy by going through their stuff. A few others felt I contaminated a crime scene. (There was no evidence of crime, but OK).

It was just an ordinary tent sealed up in a cave. It was so ordinary in fact, that people had been skipping by it for 2 months without doing anything about it. Who knows how long it would be there, had I not looked? I’m glad that I did. So the authorities have the GPS and information and will do what they need to do. I’ve not been updated by anyone, but hope it was just a person that left their stuff and went back home safe. Trash is easy to deal with, missing persons are not.

Another visit to an obscure and unknown trail in the Superstitions - the Wave Cave. Yes, it's rarely visited and is off the radar screens of most hikers. NOT. Oh well, the solution to avoid the circus at this place is to start in the dark. Jason and I arrived a little before 7am and started up. To our surprise, another group was also heading up at the same time. So much for my starting early plan.

The hike up is the same as always. I noticed that the final climb up to the cave is getting pretty worn out. It's wider and contains more scree than I remember from the last time up here. I guess a constant stream of wave surfers have taken it's toll. I also noticed the white arrows all along the trail starting at the boundary. Having come across lost Wave Cavers further up the Carney Springs Trail and along the Lost Goldmine Trail, I guess someone took it upon themselves to bring cans of white Krylon and spray an arrow every 10 feet all the way up? A well placed cairn can get knocked down, but spraying arrows everywhere is harder to get rid of? Sometimes, when a path is not clear, a little indicator is helpful. Spraying an arrow when the path is very defined is pure and simple defacement and I wish the self-appointed trail stewart would spray a big "L" on their forehead so we can all see who they are.

My plan was to get to the cave for the sunrise and then explore the area below the Three Sisters. Jason needed to cross out the Wave Cave hike to just about complete is Superstition Trail coverage. He injured his leg last month, but was up for this one. After getting my sunrise shots, we started heading up along the edge of the formation. Jason did ok and we made it up to the base of the third sister. Such awesome views up there. I was up for going further, but his leg was starting to feel the crazy off-trail steepness. We soaked in the views and then started back down. We will hit this area again when his leg is feeling better and make a proper hike along the "shelf" that extends pretty far along the massif.

On the way down, we encountered the steady stream of hikers we were expecting. But, it was not as busy as I've experienced in the past and the parking lot was not over-flowing onto Peralta Road as I've seen it before. The weather was perfect for hiking, so that surprised me a little.

I am happy to keep this circus isolated to this trail. Peralta Trail gets over-run as well, but it's still avoided the white arrow/Insta-Face mania this one seems to illict.

My brother was in town visiting and had to be back by midafternoon, so we decided to stay local and went to the Superstitions. We hiked the Robber's Roost/Cave Trail loop [ triplog ] and were done well before noon, so we drove over to the Wave Cave Trailhead to give that a try.

There were three other cars parked there, and I hoped that everyone would be on the way down as the day warmed up. We did pass one pair of hikers on their way out, but as we got closer to the cave, we caught up to another pair still on the way up, and yet another pair posing on the wave when we got up there.

So, even on a weekday, with relatively warm temperatures, there was no solitude to be had at the Wave Cave, which wasn't a surprise. On the bright side, I guess my brother got the true Wave Cave experience: waiting in line, watching strangers do yoga poses on the wave, then having other strangers lurk awkwardly nearby while we sat in the cave...good times.

We didn't spend too long in there before we started back down, but I was glad he got to see it, and combined with the first hike earlier in the day, it was a good intro tour of that part of the Superstitions for someone who hasn't been there. Hopefully I can convince him to visit again soon and we can find a full day to do a longer hike.

Beautiful hike to Wave Cave and beyond. Shame, when I got to the cave, no one was there to take my picture. I continued up to the Ridgeline and over to Three Sisters where I lunched and took some pictures. Then back to Ridgeline and over to Carney and down. Nice day;

We took a short hike up to the Wave Cave along with half of Phoenix. Ginny had never been there so it was a must do trip. Good work out climbing up to it especially if you hadn’t been hiking in a month because you’ve been in Texas. The crowds actually weren’t too bad, the parking area still had some open spots when we arrived at 9.

It’s been at least a year since I have climbed up Carney Springs Trail. I wanted to hike up the Three Sisters Peaks and soak in the views.

I ran into a friend and his dog at the trailhead and we started up. I was a slow mover on the climb up to the false saddle. The weather was cloudy, humid and surprisingly not cold. We made to the Carney Saddle and started up the Ridgeline.

There was a little water running in West Boulder and the entire trail was muddy/damp all the way. I remembered how steep Carney Springs was, but I guess my mind forgot how steep the Ridgeline Trail is climbing out of the West Boulder saddle area. I was slow poke going up that too.

But, turtle-speed aside, we made it up to the Three Sisters. The views and geology up here are so unique. The stacked rocks and spires are so beautiful. This formation is amazing, from the base or top.

We went out to the peaks as far as my respect for the Law of Gravity allows. Sister 1 & 2. We skipped Sister 3.
I started down and my friend and his mountain dog decided they would hit 5057. Climbing back down the Ridgeline, it’s clear how bad the fire was up here. Parts of this trail was like a jungle as the shrubbery was so thick. But, it’s all grassy now, with many, many tree skeletons spread about. There was some serious water erosion in this area as well. The little drainages had some water going down. Parts of the Ridgeline Trail were just erased.

I made it to near the West Boulder Saddle and decided to explore a little at the chutes going to down the Wave Cave area. I have climbed up one of them in the past, but that was brutal. I found a “doable” route along the ridge opposite the cave and made my way down to the drainage. It was steep, but I was able to make it down without any issues. I traversed over to the Wave Cave to meet the masses and have a little snack and rest. Lots of people out, but not as many as I thought there would be. After snacking/resting, I hiked down to the trailhead.

My pace for this hike was so slow! But, I was not in a hurry and took my time. The hike up was tough and my little bushwhack adventure was a slow go as well. All of that aside, I achieved my goals – hike up to the Three Sisters, find an alternate route down and get in an "elevation hike".

Last minute decision as I was heading towards Peralta trail head noticed only 2 cars parked at Carney so I thought why not the Wave Cave its a good workout plus good views can be enjoyed more without the crowd, went ahead and turned in to the Lost Goldmine trail head. Plenty of dust on Peralta road ,on the way in some cattle standing in the road on the way out they had moved to the shade. Saw no one on Lost Goldmine heading toward Carney, no one after either but a group of 4 were preparing to exit the cave as I arrived. Rare occurrence of having the cave to myself. Had a snack, created an echo and then departed. After the steeper portion did see a rattlesnake cross the trail in front of me , it didn’t care for my picture attempt stop which wasn’t successful as it moved into vegetation and coiled up . Tail kept moving for a solid 3 minutes while I never was able to get a clear picture :( That was it for wildlife though a cow decided to take up the whole trail and refused the cow whisperers encouragement to move. Substantial bee activity amongst the blooming ironwood and plentiful saguaros . Turned out to be a good time to find solitude at the cave , it never felt that warm until finishing up.

This could also be called Balancing Rock to Wave Cave!

I decided I needed to give it another try right away after last week. Made it out to my turn around spot about 45 minutes faster than previously. Went farther to the bottom of the drainage but still didn't get down to where I wanted because it was too steep or too choked. Climbed up the other side and took a break because it was obvious things were gonna get rough.

East of Mushroom Rock the slick rock and game trails end and scrambling and catclaw take over! I don't think I was even going 1 mph!! I found some old climbers' trails but it still seemed like it took forever to turn the corner at the base of Three Sisters and head north to Wave Cave.

Of course it was busy! Took a picture and left! By the time I reached Lost Goldmine I was really wishing I had a shuttle but the long walk back gave me time to take some pictures of the ridgeline and have a shot of bourbon to celebrate!

I doubt I'll do this one again! I'll probably go back down to Ermahgerd and maybe the big funnel by Mushroom Rock but past that it was diminishing returns! I'm glad I was able to get it done once though!!

3 of us left Carney lot at 530 am with our headlamps made it to the cave at 640am, only ones there, Waited for the sunrise, by 720 am we heard others heading up as we started heading down, nice to have the cave to ourselfs for a beautiful sunrise, passed many on their way up as we headed down, at the fenclie My partners headed back to the lot, I planned to hike to kings ranch road, stayed on lost goldmine than started heading southwest across the valley, followed a two track and some mountain bike trails ending at a decline with a swinging gate with a sliding pipe lock, was not sure if I was trespassing, but talked to some bikers that assured me I was on the right track, hit kings ranch walked down to rt 60 where I had a pick up. Total of about 10 miles for this hike.

A night hike out to the wave. The full moon gave us plenty of light. The exposure shots came out clearer and with more color than I was expecting. We also played around with my friends night vision.

Left from lostgoldmine trail parking lot , easy well worn trail got to a cedar post with a wave trail sign pointing straight ahead, turns out that this is the spot that if you turn north crossing the fenceline you will be on the trail that leads up to the peralta mine , I actually thought this was the wave cave, I met someone coming through the fence line that said the cave is this way, anyway it was a nice side trip to the rock face with a caged off mine shaft, you can climb the shelf ledge above the mine for great views, see the dust rising the length of peralta road as more hikers drive in, at this point I met someone who knew the area well and told me that wave cave was farther west down the goldmine trail, Pay attention to the next cedar post you pass, there is no sign on it but this is where you turn right through the fence line to get on the trail that climbs to wave cave, I passed this by a half a mile before I ran into someone that told me I had passed the trail, by this time 11:00 am the trail was getting crowded and the climb to the cave was all about passing and letting others pass on the narrow steep trail, well worth the effort when you get into the cool air of the cave. Plan on taking my wife but during the week when less crowded. Great hike with nice side trip.

Fun little out and back, with a nice payoff in the wave cave. My dog Charlie handled it well.
