Dry conditions. Not crowded. Saw a long-nosed snake coming in the day before. I needed to do something outside of my normal routine. Few flowers

Up Vault Mine to Agua Caliente Saddle, east on Agua Caliente, and then down Old Baldy Trail. Beautiful day, a bit of fall color in lower canyon area, mostly ash trees.

Stringing together my two favorite tough training hikes together to get some time on my feet to prep for next month.

Doing a lot of trail work on Old Baldy below Josephine Saddle and it's like a super freeway in spots. Made for a quick ascent to the saddle.

No wildflowers to speak of. Did hear a pair of Elegant Trogons chatting with each other.

Just about perfect weather for hiking, hit the parking lot and it was 59 degrees and I had to throw on some arm warmers for the first mile or so. Uneventful stroll up Vault Mine and over to Agua Caliente trail. This about the only place where you are not swimming in knee high to chest high grass and weeds around town it seems. Heading down Agua Caliente and a deer pops in front of me and oddly just stands there without moving. Simply stands there and looks at me, then turned around and noticed the reason why. A tiny fawn was 10 yards away and attempting to rejoin their mother. Scooted along once I figured that out and let the family reunion begin. Lots of deer out today, saw at least a half dozen more along the way.

The reason for my hike is that I just finished up the book that details the tragedy of the three Boy Scouts who perished up in the Santa Rita's and I wanted to see where they had fallen. Had never been on Temporal Gulch trail and poked around there for a bit. Went roughly a mile and half down Temporal Gulch to get the lay of the land and to plot out future expeditions. Very pretty views back here and McBeth Spring was running well. Saw about the freshest bear scat I've seen up in the Santa Rita's, it still had a fresh pool of urine on top of it. But alas I missed seeing any bears up here again.

From there did a casual stroll down Super Trail and bumped into Jim H heading up for the afternoon. Hopefully soon it cools off and we can agree on meeting for a hike that doesn't start at zero dark thirty.

up super trail to josephine saddle. took josephine canyon trail down to the road and followed that to a confluence of a couple dirt roads where there was an abandoned car parked crazily on the hillside, on a spare with open trunk and windows. didn't look like it had been there long. saw the crosser on the way back up.

i kinda forgot how nice josephine canyon is.

took agua caliente out to jack mountain then continued on to vault mine and took that down

got to madera at about 710. there was still ample parking. it was a beautiful day in the santa ritas

Coming off a low key week. The air quality has been pretty bad down here, so I spent the bulk of my working out indoors at my home gym. Tuning up for my Mt Whitney trip in three weeks, so wanted to get in a workout that left me feeling refreshed and not beat up. Next weekend is the long shake down cruise and want to be ready for that as well.

This just might turn into my favorite 2-ish hour run. The first climb from the parking lot gets your attention and then you hit the Agua Caliente trail. Did a detour over to the saddle, then turned back around to head over to Josephine Saddle. The stretch from AC Saddle to Josephine Saddle is one of the best runnable alpine trails around. Only need to slow down in a handful of sections.

Made it over to Josephine Saddle in good time and then casually ran down Super Trail. Not taking any chances on rolling an ankle or tripping over a stump.

Some very well fed bears in the area, the fresh scat on the trail was impressive. Heard a bear crashing through the woods, found a few fresh tracks, but didn't actually see any bears. The Santa Rita's are getting just enough rain that the late summer wildflowers are starting to pop out.

Started at Madera Canyon TH. Intended to go up Vault Mine, but missed the right turn, hiked past the old mine and followed social trails up the ridge (passing an awesome campsite on the way). After losing the thread of the social trails and being obstinate, I bushwhacked up to the Agua Caliente trail and got to Josephine Saddle. From there, after a pit stop at Bellows Spring, it was up Wrightson (a lot of folks with positive energy!). There was rain on 7/2 and continued cloud cover so it was cooler than expected. After the summit trail, headed briefly down the Super Trail to connect with Gardner Canyon, which is well maintained. Continued the loop around Wrightson by connecting to the Arizona Trail. The fully maintained campsite was near Walker Basin but it was too early in the day to put in. So continued on the AZT to Temporal Gulch Trail. There were scattered pools throughout from last night's rain (and before -- some were pretty scummy). Temporal Gulch was likewise well maintained. Downside is that there were no maintained camp grounds before Josephine Saddle. After about 18-20 miles in, I found a ridge that had a decent camp. Startled some deer (all I wanted to do was hug them - is that so wrong?).

Next day was a quick trip past McBeth Spring (perfect water), and then back down Aqua Caliente and Vault Mine to see what I'd missed with the bushwhack. Vault Mine is steep! I didn't have a trash bag on the trip, but for anyone interested there is a fair bit of camping trash (old clothes, even) on Temporal Gulch within 1-1.5 miles of Josephine Saddle. Water: I carried all my needs from Bellows until McBeth. The back half of the day was hot with clouds burned off. While I could have hit some stagnant pools along the way, it was doable with what I'd brought. This is a gorgeous loop/figure 8. I look forward to my next Santa Rita trip! Mileage and AEG may be off by a bit because of bushwhack.

I started this hike with no particular destination in mind, just wanting to be in the cool high country. Hiking up Old Baldy, I stumbled onto a mid-sized black bear halfway to Josephine Saddle. The bear seemed unconcerned by my presence, so I took a few photos and then urged it on. The bear continued up the trail with me following behind at a distance, until a descending group finally sent it off trail, huffing in protest. I continued up Old Baldy trail a while past Josephine, then came back and turned onto Agua Caliente. Took a short break at the aspen corner before continuing on to Agua Caliente Saddle. Sunset sent me back down Vault Mine trail toward Madera Canyon. Almost back to the trailhead, a loud crash from a treetop caught my attention in the growing darkness, and I could just make out two big black paws gripping and then sliding down a big sycamore tree. Bear sighting number 2 for the day. A great afternoon indeed.

Wanted to spot the Elegant Trogon on this trip. We mapped out a loop Starting with the Old Baldy trail, then jumping onto the Agua Caliente Trail and finishing up on the Vault Mine Trail.
Madera Canyon is well known for it's birding, and hiking up the Old Baldy Trail you could hear a ton of birds everywhere including the Trogon all up and down the canyon... But we did not see the Trogon at this point.

I prefer desert hiking, but as far as higher elevation hiking with the trees and all, this is one of the better hikes I have been on. In addition to the variety of birds, views were great when available, the trail is well maintained and easy to follow, intersections are well marked.

Finally within the last 1/2 mile of our hike we were able to spot the Trogon and get some pretty good photos.

This is a great area, and I plan on coming back for more as the temperatures rise in the valley.

Needed to get in some hiking, so chose the tried and true Madera Canyon area. This time I decided to head up to Agua Caliente Trail via Carrie Nation, then a nice long break at Josephine Saddle, before heading back down on the Super Trail. Very warm day it was, but fortunately there is lots of shade to make it tolerable. Normally, when coming down the Super Trail, I cut off and head down past Rogers Rock turnoff and then cut back over over on the Pipeline. I find this more scenic and a time saver. But today I just played it straight and stuck to the Super Trail...probably the last time I will do that.

The weather forecast was questionable in the afternoon but we decided to give it a go. From Madera we went up the Super Trail to Josephine Saddle. Then up the front side to the summit passing a few small patches of snow on the approach. A bit of wind on the summit but nothing that significant however the clouds started to get thicker as we took a break. After the break we headed down the backside seeing only two people on that stretch.

We reached Josephine Saddle again and this time headed up the Agua Caliente Saddle trail towards Mount Hopikins. By this time light rain started to fall but nothing too bad. Eventually there is a turnoff where a route splits from Agua Caliente and heads up the steep hill to the Hopkins road. Once on the road it's an easy stroll to the Whipple Observatory on the summit. I had not been up there in several years so it was cool to see the observatory again.

After that we headed down the only somewhat off trail portion of the hike. The sudo route follows the ridgeline down to Agua Caliente Saddle. It's mostly ponderosa pine so it's easy to navigate with almost no manzanita or scrub oak to deal with. At the saddle we picked up the regular trail and then over to the Vault Mine trail junction. From there it's about 2 miles down to the Madera parking lot on the Vault Mine trial which is one of the steepest constructed trails I've been on. Good hike with only minor on and off light rain and we got to see some new trails in the area!!

perfect day for this hike. got out of my car at relatively deserted roundup TH to the gobbles of the turkeys somewhere in the canyon. decided to go up carrie nation to the agua caliente trail (perhaps my 2 favorite santa rita trails?). found and watched a silent and beautiful trogon near the mine. this is probably now my 15th sighting or so, and i have gotten pretty good at figuring out a couple specific spots they like in particular over the years. hit up good old Jack mountain for my yearly visit (at a minimum). the route up there is getting more and more faint. enjoyed the fabulous agua caliente trail over to vault mine. had the pleasure of spotting and getting buzzed by a twin spotted rattlesnake on one of the rockfalls. i believe that is the third one of those i have seen in the santa ritas. quick and steep trip down the vault mine trail sealed the deal.

as always this is a VERY high yield short hike in the santa ritas.

Another Madera Canyon Meander..
Decided to start this hike a little lower down Madera Canyon than the usual location at the end of the road. I had never done the upper portion of the Nature Trail, so this was from the Amphitheater parking area. The trail promptly climbs up above the canyon to avoid private property. The result is some nice views before it drops back down into the riparian corridor and skirts by the Chuparosa Inn before reaching the Mt. Wrightson Picnic Area (Roundup). You can stay in the creek bed and avoid hiking along the usual route to the Old Baldy turnoff from the parking lots, reuniting with the Vault Mine/Carrie Nation Mine trail near the bench.

The trail up to Carrie Nation Mine is through a beautiful section of forest with plenty of shade. Gets steep in places, but what else is new? Since the monsoon storms are just beginning, the creek was dry except for a few seeps and a little flow at the mine. I heard trogon(s) several times along the hike, but as is usual, no sightings (elusive little devils). Encountered several birders on the way to Carrie Nation, as this is a real nice section for that activity (away from the more crowded Super & Old Baldy Trails).

On the way back down I decided to walk the road to my vehicle instead of returning on the Nature Trail. Reason was the cloud cover I enjoyed earlier was now gone and there would be more elevation gain that way with plenty of exposure. Plus, the road is a bit shorter and all downhill. I enjoyed passing by some of the lodging along the way.

Across the road from the Amphitheater parking lot is another access point for the Four Springs Trail to Kent Spring and beyond (with connectors to Bog Springs and the campground). One of the things that makes this area so appealing is the multitude of loop hike combinations available. :)
