Early morning hike in the Phoenix Mountains. Started from the Quartz 8A TH around 6am. Used a headlamp going up the Quartz. Seemed rockier than I remember. Took Ruth Hamilton up and over (that was as rocky as I remember) and then took road down to the Mohave trail. Missed the turn to the Mohave Connector and had to retrace my steps. Then took the “connector” around and over to the Quartz trail. Nice morning. Great temps. No wildlife. Encountered 17 hikers.

Went to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve with the intent of doing a loop off the Quartz Ridge Trail and starting from the 32nd Street TH. The TH has about 25 parking spots and I arrived early enough (before 7 am) to get a spot with several still left.

It was still pre-sunrise and I could see the flicker of headlamps on the ridgeline as I headed out. I didn't use my own headlamp, as the dawn light was quickly coming and sufficient for my purposes.

Once around the loop connecting to LV Yates, I decided to hit up the Piestewa Summit while on that side of the ridgeline. It was busy, as per typical, on a Saturday in December, but not jam packed. The summit was a bit breezy. I hadn't been up there since they put in "steps" up what used to be a final scramble to the summit.

After descending, I crossed back over the easterly ridgeline on the Ruth Hamilton trail and then circled around and up RJ Peak and then down to the end point overlook on the Mohave Trail, returning on the Mohave Connector to the parking lot.

The PMP is not my favorite, but these were mostly new trails for me, and outside of the summit trail, the hiking traffic was pretty light, providing a nice workout along with the city views.

I started from the 40th street TH on a CCW loop I drew up and made my way over to the Circumference Trail. A MTB'er said to me, good to see you again. I said huh? He said I saw you here yesterday. I said, not me. He said, then you have a doppelganger. Look out world, there are two of us.

The climb on the Circumference Trail is in much better shape, than when I last did it 8 years ago. They've even put in numerous steps to keep the washouts to a minimum.

On the climb to the peak, you pass the normal mish-mosh of first-timers, snowbirds, speedsters, boom-boxers, yoga pants in check, yoga pants stuffed to the max, etc. etc. On the way down, the Route Scout birds went off announcing the mileage. A mother and 10ish YO daughter were on their way up. The mother remarked to her struggling daughter, "See the birds are singing to you". "I don't care about the stupid birds". No Teva Joe's were spotted.

I continued across on the Mohave and Mohave Connector Trail, with views into the small cookie cutter homes. Now on the home stretch I headed back to the lot on the Quartz Ridge Trail and YV Yates

Not as high of concentration as other places in the area, but plenty of Scorpionweed, poppies, Dichelostemma capitatum, fiddleneck, Lupine, brittle bush, Rock Daisy, Creosote.

The BLOB! Super fun hike. Get the busy social trail and a lot of quiet solitude trail and everything between. Great loop to get miles in while staying in town.

First log for this, but I know I did it once before. Oh, well.

Hot. Really hot, but this was better than a SoMo hike or Pie Peak. The best part of this hike is gawking at the ostentatious houses to the SW. One is very clearly abandoned and the pool is empty. Sure, this area might seem like a nice spot, but I wouldn't want to live on the south slope of a black rock mountain. It probably gets over 130 degrees out there when the weather is going to be like it was yesterday all the way through to Saturday; 114 to 117 degrees. Plus, no soil and no flood irrigation, so you have to spend a fortune on water to attempt to make a livable habitat. Maybe they're so rich, they build an indoor dog toilet area? Ha!

Quick Saturday morning hike to get some exercise. Combined the Quartz Ridge, Mohave Connector, and Mohave Trails to make a loop. I like the little summit up there, not nearly as crowded as Squaw Peak. You can view all the people from here going up and down the summit trail. I dropped down to Mohave Trail #200A and up it's ridge to get a better look at the construction on the parking lots; coming along good! Then, I finished up my hike down Trail 202 Connector past the McMansions and tennis courts. Beautiful part of the trail that doesn't see as many people, but I like it. Even more beautiful in afternoon or evenings. Good alternative to the Hubbub over at Piestawa Summit Trail! :D

Headed in earlier than usual for the summit. A few Fridays ago I switched from a standard neon to a black shirt by chance. Passing remarks rolled in from folks that never acknowledge me. Back to neon today to appease the hecklers... lol

Nice temps so I decided to go check out Ruth for a change. The guide for [ Mohave - Ruth Hamilton Loop ] is spot on but I really enjoyed the clockwise version more than anticipated. Just one hiker on Ruth, a doz on Quartz &
five on the Mohaves. More small town friendly vs that horrible summit trail. Always say I need to hit this more. Rarely do but have a feeling I might walk the talk. Everything is green.

While VOAZ is my fav, there are several stretches on this loop where you are surrounded by mountains with no hint of city. Of course then you walk beside a neighborhood and give back all the serenity... lol

One nice Wild Geranium or similar. Kicking myself for not taking a photo as none have been posted in the Valley.

After hike/jog. Jogged what I could, but combination body, elements and rocky trails made for a slow go and a default to hiking in some places. Started from the cul-de-sac at the end of Squaw Peak Dr. a little after 4pm. Went CCW, first going down the road to the Mohave Trail. Took the Mohave to the Mohave Connector. This segment is short, but is nice for running. Mild elevation gain and relatively rock free. Took Mohave Connector to Quartz Trail. The Connector is flatter overall, except for the last saddle climb and descent. Trail has some smooth sections, but is more rocky in general meaning speed control and foot place, eat is important. Get a view of some nice homes on the backside of the park. Took Quartz to Ruth Hamilton. Quartz is a very popular well used trail. Ironically, I didn't see anyone on it today. Little rocky, but pretty nice for jogging. Some hills and a descent climb at the end. I have jogged this in the past, but today I ended up hiking the last couple switchbacks. Took Ruth Hamilton to Nature. In my opinion the Ruth Hamilton is not a jogging trail. East side is ok, just a short steady climb. But the west side is too trough-like and too rocky for a good run. I did a very slow jog down the west side and still almost took a spill. This probably as much a testament to the trail as my age and coordination. That being said the interior is a nice trail to hike. Trail is engaging with some nice minor rock formations. Took Nature Trail back to TH. Nice loop. Probably more enjoyable as a hike than as a jog.

As it looked more and more promising that magic sky water would actually fall, I decided I wanted to be outside to enjoy what would apparently amount to mostly just a 1-2 hour frontal passage. It seemed to be lingering out in western AZ, so I decided to wait a while for a late start in hopes of catching the rain.

We were still mostly early. The night was great anyway. Low clouds and city lights eliminated the need for headlamps. It was 75 degrees at 8pm on January 10. There was a very nice breeze.

As hoped however, the front finally arrived with fierce winds, a couple of too-close-for-comfort lightning strikes, driving rain, running water, puddles, and all around good times. Managed to get back to the parking lot after wading through a few shallow rivers and captured the requisite selfie. Somehow the parking lots were totally empty.

I will never understand why people here bitch about the lack of rain all the time and yet don't take advantage of it when it actually happens.

There was finally some rain in the forecast that was coming into the valley around 8-9pm. So Chumley and I met over by Squaw Peak and decided to make the Circ Loop and extended it around to the Quartz Trail. The first 5+ miles were dry but we could see rain off to the west. It slowly worked its way over to us and started raining as we hiked back on the Mohave Connector Trail. The skies opened and a solid rain fell. Flashes of lightning illuminated the area which was really cool and not scary. We completed the loop and were soaked even with rain gear. Felt great hiking in the rain again!

This is my 3rd favorite hike in the preserves after the Summit Trail & VOAZ. I cleaned up my 11 year old description and renamed it so you don't need a degree in trailology. Still more people out than anticipated as the mercury rises. Which is nice as it's really in its prime with the Palo Verdes in full yellow buzz bloom.

Gonna start out this triplog with an awesome quote from one of my favorite songs from Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.....
"Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people!" Things I saw on trail today:

- A TON of new shortcuts that I don't recall from last time I hiked/ran around here. I still don't get the point of the people who just look for the closest parking spot or the shortest way besides the actual trail going out and even bothering hiking!
- A woman with her dark brown chocolate choc lab with one tiny water bottle between the two of them
- A woman with a baby (a RED-headed baby) with NO hat on in a carrier in the full sun. The woman had no hat or sunglasses either
- A woman starting out at 1 pm with her dog. I mentioned to her that it was getting kind of hot, and luckily she at least had the sense to say she's only going for about a half hour.

Enough of :SB:

Other than that, I felt great (with the exception of my waist pack rubbing and hitting my boo-boo on my hip! I should've thought that one through more thoroughly and brought my backpack instead! But it was nice to be back in my old stomping grounds. Here for a few days for work and house stuff. I miss the preserves!

Went out before work. Legs were dead but pushed through both loops. I would like to run this circle of fresh legs sometime to see how much time I could shave off.

Did the Summit trail in a PR 40:07, thought I was going to break 40 min but need to get faster, after did the loop on the other side of the rode. Fun little loop and I was surprised how busy 8A was, lots of people.
