Ran this for the Machine Solutions Run for CHC. Great day, just cool enough to make running through the woods a blast! Lots of wildflowers on the last 2 miles too, one meadow full of firecracker penstemon.

Unusually hot (for Flag) and windy this weekend! I started from Fort Tuthill and ran north. Nice forest for a bit, then some meadows, then a big grassy gully full of gold poppies! According to the FUT website, this trail hooks up with another that curves around the NAU campus, but in reality it dumps you out on a street next to a map that is probably useful for people who know where they are and what the names of the streets are. I had mileage to put in, though, so I wound up going out and back on Milton (yum, fresh carbon monoxide!) and then retracing my steps back to Fort Tuthill.

A nice undulating walk from the Tortilla TH sign at US 60 to the old water tank. Bailey the brindle boxer had to go back to the car with knee problems, but D & I continued on to see what that structure was shining in the distance. Beautiful day, a fair crowd of vehicles parked at the 60 when we got back mid-afternoon and a few who braved it to the ranch.

Tried this as a trail run - not such a bright idea! I'd forgotten (or never realized) how much of the trail is loose rock, or worse an evil mix of loose and embedded jutting rocks, especially around the south side of the mountain. Nice day though, beautiful weather. A lot of folks out walking their dogs.

Not sure whether to post this as a run or a hike, since I ran/walked from my hotel downtown to the TH, climbed the trail (not much running went on there), and ran back to the hotel, with breaks in between. Beatiful clear and sunny morning; lots of other runners out! Heard, then saw some quail in the yards along the way, and an absolutely fearless cottontail on the trail. On the run back, I saw a deer standing stock-still in a yard, looking like part of the Old West-themed lawn ornaments until it flicked an ear!

Why do all my trail runs turn into adventures? Another altitude training run in preparation for the Mt. Lemmon half marathon. On my first loop I made a wrong turn onto Bell Rock Trail (instead of Bell Rock Path) and spent 15 or so minutes leaping from rock to rock saying "this does not look right" until a German fellow put me on the right track. Second loop. I met some walkers going the other way for the second time, who looked amazed that I was still going. Heh. Pass the egoboo, please. But it was really getting hot, hotter than the forecast. A shortcut at the end that turned out to be a long cut (I think I went down Big Park Trail) exhausted my water and energy, reduced to staggering zombie-like down the trail moaning "Paarrkingg Looottttt!"

Got to the TH later than my liking, but only one other car in the parking lot and they must've taken another trail. I had the trail all to myself, except for tons of little lizards and some vultures that were not shy about checking me out - one swooped down close and I could hear the swoosh of its wings! The creek was completely dry, but vegetation very green and overgrown. I swear there was some plant along the way that smelled just like curry, but I never narrowed it down!

Back at the TH, a family showed up looking for the Woodbury TH; guy said he was unimpressed with the directions on HikeArizona! Didn't think to ask why they were interested in that trail in particular.

Cool and muggy morning. The early part of this run has a stealth uphill grade that always kicks my butt. Coming around towards the home stretch I met a guy who was running 4 loops and thought, "yeah, I could do a second loop". Then the skies opened, I re-discovered that my ratty old windbreaker isn't remotely water resistant, and beat it back to the parking lot thoroughly drenched.

My original intent was to take Desert Park out and return on Gateway Loop, making a nice 5 mile run with a few challenging uphill sections. I wound up taking the wrong turn at Windgate and wound up going around the back of McDowell Peak and then back around via Bell Pass! : app : Fortunately a couple Good Samaritans topped off my water bottle and gave me a rice crispie treat so I could make it back to the parking lot without being evac'd! You do see a lot more wildlife around the backside, though.

Wildflower hunting on a Sunday morning; I'm going to put it as "moderate" because there were long stretches where it was very green, but no flowers. Lupins, lupins, lupins! And several other species of little blue flowers. This year's golden drifts come courtesy of a small yellow daisy-like blossom, as the poppies are scarce on the ground. (I've seen more in my neighbors' yards, in fact.) The hdgehogs are in bloom, and more Indian paintbrush than I ever recall seeing at this elevation, especially on the Dutchman leg of the loop.

Got to the TH late - 8:30 - and had to park in overflow. The trail was packed, especially coming back down! Looks like there might be a decent wildflower show in another couple weeks; this day it was mostly roadside lupins. The creek is flowing!

Nice views to the Southwest of the farmland and un-developed plains - once you get to the climbing part! Nice easy climb with just enough of a workout, and a cool sunny day. Plenty bikers & runners out, including a woman w/two dogs leashed to her waistband!

The directions are a bit ambiguous - at post 46, you do take the side trail directly north! (:? Got to see a bit more of the Desert Classic trail than I set out to do.)

End of my Thanksgiving trip, so took my time, even investigated that "cave" near the bottom to see where it went (not much of anywhere). The yellow leaves of the cottonwoods made the approach to Indian Garden especially pleasant. At Mile and a Half resthouse there were a few flakes of snow out of a (mostly) blue sky, followed by a brief sprinkle of rain, then nothing.

The snow fell overnight.
