Did this as part of a loop combining Elden Lookout, Sunset, Little Elden, and Fatman's Loop. Was really windy on top today what with the storm coming in and all. Didn't hang around long up there. Headed down Sunset Trail...nice views along the Catwalk. Hooked up with the Little Elden then the last part of Fatman's. All in all, a nice loop!

Pretty much had the trail to myself this morning. Did see quite a bit of fresh bear scat along the way, but no bear. Upper part of the trail is a challenge just because of the overgrowth. Nice color on the oaks on top of the rim really made the hike worth it.

I was a little concerned just after starting out on this hike what with all the shooting going on. Seems this is a very popular area for those folks who like to muck up the desert by shooting at junk (paint cans, VCRs etc) then leaving their trash behind. What a mess! Anyway, once I got past all that this hike isn't too bad. Not a whole lot of interesting scenery out here and you're always reminded that civilization is not too far away with noise from planes, helicopters and the ever present ATVs. Beats holding down a couch watching TV though. :)

Got a 7 AM start today. Wanted to beat the crowd at the trailhead. Glad I did, too. Trail was very crowded on the way back. Parking lot was like a circus when I got back. Nice hike, though the best part was after the water tank on private land. Plenty of creek crossing/boulder hopping, as the creek was flowing pretty good, and a little bushwacking here and there.

Nice little walk in the woods. Pretty much had the trail to myself today...except for a couple who decided to let their 4 rather large dogs run loose on the trail ahead of them. Shows a certain lack of hiking etiquette I think. Anyway, aside from that, it was a good hike.

Got an 8AM start. A little overcast and rainy. First part of this hike is so-so. Nothing too thrilling. Once you drop down into the creek though, the fun starts. The creek was flowing pretty good this morning. I'd had my fill of boulder hopping though by the time I reached the canyon. It was well worth it! Almost otherworldly standing there surround by those sheer rock walls and slick rock formations. Had a snack and hung aroung for a while to enjoy the quiet, then headed back. Didn't feel like doing the whole loop today...next time.

Every time I rode to Payson I told myself I was going to get up to the top of Mt Ord. Finally went to the bother of driving all the way across the valley to do it. I have to say it was a pretty good hike. I wasn't prepared to run into SUVs at 6,000 feet, but hey it's a jeep road, right? Jeeps, pickups, quads, they were all out today. No matter, it was still a great day to be out. Lots of snow on the upper portion too. WooHoo!!

6 AM start today. A light rain falling, if you can believe that. Saw absolutely no one else all the way out and back, which is rare for any Sedona area trail. Except for some pools of stagnant water, the creek was dry as usual. Good views of the cockscomb as well as other formations surrounding Sedona.

Thought there'd be more water in the tanks after the rains this week, but not much more than usual. More frogs though. ;)

Stayed at Starr Pass Golf Resort thru most of this week. While there we hit parts of both the Yetman trail and the Starr Pass trail. We've done both of these trails in the past and have always come across many mountain bikers. Not surprising since they're primarily bike trails. This time though we didn't see any bikers, or other hikers for that matter. Did a little bushwacking to climb some of the peaks in the area in addition to the trails. Lots of development going on in the area. Leave to a golf course and resort (the new Marriott) to muck up what once was a beautiful desert...

Nice little urban treadmill type hike. Not quite on par with something like Squaw Peak (yes, I still call it that) or Camelback, but still good hike. Just enough ups and downs to keep it interesting.

Got a little later start than I wanted. This sort of felt like a Jekyl and Hyde trail to me. The first part has nice views, is well maintained, and takes you through some nice stands of pine mixed with grassy meadows. The other part, where it descends down to the north trailhead, is largely unmaintained, with sometimes dense overgrowth on the trail. The switchbacks on the way back up the north side were kinda tough, considering I'd already hiked over 5 miles according to my GPS. I'm guessing total distance from south to north trailhead is around 11 miles, maybe more.

I was expecting this trail to be kind of a snooze what with it being relatively flat and not that far from town. But I was pleasantly surprised. This hike shows how beautiful the desert can really be. There were wildflowers galore and many of the cactus were in full bloom, too. That and the hills were covered in a lush, green overgrowth. Also, saw more wildlife than I expected...everything from hawks to burros. Aside from a couple jets that were bound for Luke, it was quite peaceful out there. Saw no one else till I got to the very end where I met up with a group on horseback. All in all a nice hike close to home.

Will the construction through VOC and Sedona ever end? Since the last time I was up there, they've put in a number of roundabouts just to confound the tourists that much more.
Anyway, it was cool and windy this morning. Lot was about 1/2 full of cars but surprisingly didn't see too many other people on the summit trail.
Trail was pretty easy going up to the first bench. After that it got really muddy from all the melting snow runoff. Still quite a bit of snow left up there, too. Fire damage makes the summit kinda eerie...sad to see all the devastation.

Was going to try the Hutch's Pool via the East Fork trail but with all the warnings about creeks and washes flowing I decided to do Blackett's Ridge instead. Still got wet as the first crossing of the creek was flowing about knee deep. Nice views of the canyon and the Catalinas from the top of the ridge. Was a little surprised to find some small patches of snow up there, too.

Got an 8:30 start today (Sat). No one else at the trailhead. I don't suspect this is one of the more popular trails in the area. Too bad because after the first 5 or so miles, when you drop down into the creekbed, it really is nice. There was quite a bit of snow, even on the lower parts of the trail. Once you get off the ATV part of the trail, the views into Black Canyon are awesome. The snow did make finding the trail a little tricky, especially in the pine forest, but nothing I couldn't figure out.
