Wanted a hike close to home. When drove up the road cars were lining both sides of road down to intersection. Almost turned around to go to something further and less crowded like Tom's Thumb, but drove up and found several open spots in lot. Guess I was arriving after the early birds left. Trail busy but not bad. Awesome weather.

I was on way to North Mountain but stopped on way down cave Creek Road to check for nearby trails on HAZ app (a great feature BTW). Discovered this trail, had never done, wanted something simple, so gave it a try. As the description says it is not well maintained, lots of lose rocks, and easy to miss path several areas, especially where washouts have created what looks like a better path. You can see on my GPS route that got way down below trail at one area, what I thought was path ended at ragged edge so checked HAZ and found trail by scrambling up.

But despite that I enjoyed this area, lots of nice views of mountains surrounding the valley.

Awesome weather but already hitting 70 F at 10am - winter is ending.

Edited AEG from 340 ft to my 416 - guess difference was for off trail few spots.

Far too long since I've been out. Local hike with dogs every day but that is not enough, and I was reminded of that today by need for rests. Ah well, awesome day for hike, a bit windy and chilly at top (well chilly for AZ ha ha). Went past the turn to thumb and up Lookout. Little detour down Feldspar and Mesquite on way back to trailhead.

Ahhh, summer is over! Nice cool morning. Decided to see if Pinnacle Peak too busy, if was planned to drive further out to Tom's Thumb north side. Cars were lined down the road from Pinnacle Peak trailhead but several empty spots in lot, guess it pays to be a bit late, I got spots from early birds who left after others showed up.

Planned to hike out and back but when got to west end decided to try a loop north. Back in June I had done a loop south and back along Happy Valley Road to Alma School [ triplog ]. Today's loop was better - walking along 94th north was very nice, got some nice pics looking over at Pinnacle Peak. Hoped to loop back before getting to Dynamite but all signed as private property. Second hope was to zigzag back south from Dynamite but all roads gated. Ah well, was a nice morning for a walk along Dynamite and down Alma School :)

An acquaintance in town who knows I like to hike asked if we could plan one. I had suggested Tom's Thumb but after heavy rain this week I thought he might enjoy the flowing creek at Spur Cross. No such luck, only mud left over from the flow a few days ago. But we had a great time, he took lots of pictures so guess he enjoyed scenery.

Edited distance from 5.5 to 5.99 mi per my gps route, aeg from 600 to 1053 ft.

ETA after lunch drove partway up Black Mountain, wound up hiking to peak [ triplog ]

After introducing a visitor to Spur Cross area [ triplog ] we had lunch at Big Earl's in Cave Creek. Over lunch we chatted about my Jeep TJ offroad so I suggested we take a drive up Black Mountain fro a short demo. Hey it's not tough but it is a decent climb, especially with washouts from recent rains. Drove up almost to end of rocky road, then we decided to hike up to peak. Nice afternoon.

Forgot to turn on HAZ until halfway up so had to clone a lower section.

Finally took a full day for a big hike. Had been up to Humphreys Summit in June, wanted to return for a visit to B-24 Bomber Crash Site. Had read on here that can be difficult to find but using HAZ got me to debris field - first sighting was a wing section at bottom of rock slide so contrary to HAZ route crossed the slide area and then followed the debris field up the rock slide to the HAZ route. There is a very nice monument near top area, just below end of HAZ route - a landing gear strut serving as a flag pole, stabilized with a piece of aircraft skin. Very nice. Had not seen pics of that anywhere online, wonder if built recently. I paused at attention for a minute of reflection then took some pics - all in a photoset. Explored for a while.

Got off trail on way back and came out in ravine below Humphreys Trail. Once back on it decided to continue up to saddle. Made terrible time, guess my legs took revenge for all the rock scrambling on slides to/from crash site. Cold up at saddle, especially in my Tshirt and shorts. Of course I had extra cover in Camelbak, but I enjoyed the cool air for a nice change. Hung out for half hour.

ETA - snow down to about 10,000 looking over at north faces, some along trail starting at 11,000.
ETA2 - included some pics in photoset of fall colors along SnowBowl Road

Been wanting to go up to Sunrise Peak on this trail since doing a loop up from 145th and down the spur to 136th. Great day, I enjoyed this trail.

I set out to make a loop up Bell Pass to try up Drinkwater and down other side to Windgate, with the knowledge that Drinkwater may not be open and may be rules against using (although I could not confirm yea or nay). Loaded up several routes found on HAZ. Sure enough, no clear path off Bell Pass Trail where several routes indicated, so I gave up quickly without any struggle and carried on down the backside of Bell Pass Trail to hit Windgate Pass. It was a nice morning, I was in shade on Bell Pass Trail all the way up to the pass, it started to get warm as I came down the west side of Windgate but not too hot. I sucked wind on two climbs, especially the second up Windgate east side but expected that because I have not been out enough past two months :(

Got my butt out of bed and was at trailhead just after 6am. This loop has been on my to do list for a while. I used Sunrise Peak 136th to 145th Loop GPS Route by @BiFrost, but I started at 145th St and went counter clockwise down to 136th St.

I really enjoyed the top end of the 136th St Spur, coming down through the canyon with all the boulders, although it was slow going with many big drops in the canyon wash. It actually felt cool in there. Many spots you would never guess there were big homes right above the canyon wall if you did not know better. However I never got onto 136th St - where BiFrost's route shows an exit from wash, there was new construction blocking the path completely (pic at photoset). So I just continued down the wash to E Via Linda Rd. I wonder if soon the Spur will be closed to hikers because eventually there will be no entry/exit.

The last mile on Via Linda back to the 145th trailhead was worst part of my hike because it was getting hot and humid, not nice on sidewalk. But other then that I enjoyed this loop. Next time I would do it clockwise up the canyon per BiFrost's route, that would be easier rather then picking way down through some of the boulder drops.

I've been a slacker, just not a morning guy, but got out of bed to get in a half decent hike, and it did feel great to get going. Have done north mountain up the paved road several times but had never gone down the southeast side. This is a nice loop, but I think next time I'll park in the larger lot and do it clockwise up the rougher part first and then down paved.

Edit 1.55 mi to 2.32 mi, 679 ft to 879 AEG per my GPS route because extra includes from small lot on 7th.

been almost four weeks since my last "real" hike, other then daily morning walks with dogs around neighborhood. My last big was Humphreys Peak - after that had a trip, life got in way and the heat/humidity demotivated me :( Decided had to get out early and beat the heat to get back at it. The lapse showed - I was slow near the top. Ah well, it was nice morning with a little breeze. Hung around at top, recovered, and back down.

Lesson learned - don't stop!!

Took a day off to do this one without the congo lines from the chairlift on weekends, as I read about at topic on here. As I posted at that topic, I really wanted to get up before snow disappears. And I was not disappointed. Snow .... in Arizona ... in June ... on the 3rd day of summer .... just after we matched record high temps in Phoenix. I know, silly!!

Another of my last year's bucket list for "turned 50, resolved to get back to serious hiking". I made good time until around 11,500 ft - then hit an "old man" wall ;) Had read that everyone has their altitude where effects really start to show, guess that is mine. Hung around top, lots of pics, 360 video, until gnats drove me back on trail. Enjoyed conversation with 3rd year student at NAU on way down, she has been getting into hiking, so I told her all about HAZ (which I do often).

Minor edits from my GPS route: 10.33 vs 10.25 miles, 3468 vs 3313 ft AEG.

got out early with my teenage son, hoping to finish North Phoenix Preserve Mystery Loop before got too hot. He is in decent shape but has not been hiking as much as he used to, so the heat did him. His old man's wisdom took over and we cut a short cut back to parking.

I decided to drive north for an afternoon hike and some escape from our heat. Hit Hwy 17 not yet sure where I would end up. Sedona area, my next log.

after an early morning hike with son that we decided to cut short (my last log), I wanted more so decided to drive north to escape our heat for an afternoon. Hit Hwy 17 not yet sure where I would end up. Decided Sedona, and after a stop at visitor's center just before Oak Creek Village decided to do Devil's Bridge. Guide at center suggested to park at Mescal Trailhead to hike in via Chuckwagon Trail

Now to be honest it was still toasty, 100F when I parked at trailhead just after 1pm. But hey, a lot of hike was in shade or partial shade. And the smell of pine makes it seem cooler ;)

I enjoyed the Bridge, took some pics, hung out for a while. On way back decided to make a loop on full Chuck Wagon Trail. Wound up cutting just a bit off the loop by walking along road at end.

Great afternoon, I need to drive north more this summer.

After doing Hog Heaven yesterday I had not planned to hike more then usual morning with dogs, but woke today feeling like more. Noticed another cool feature here on HAZ - under profile - mapped areas - % complete for areas. I thought I had done most of Phoenix Mountain Preserves but that list showed only 8 of 26, so decided to tackle another. Picked this hike. It turned out to be a nice loop - good distance with some nice climbs.

Edited 860 AEG to my 888.

this has been on my to do list for a while - another nice morning, cool for mid June, so did it. I read on here that it is tough at top, and it was! My average speed is very low because got off trail several times, took time to add some rock cairns and stopped to take pics. Boulder hopping going up, and granite sliding going down. Bent my hiking pole when lost my footing, and of course it broke when tried to straighten it, ah well it has served me well and perhaps saved me from an injury on that fall. On guard for snakes in many areas, tapping pole on rocks to stir them before I met them - but never saw any. A vulture swooped at me several times at top - wondered if a nest nearby - apologies Miss Bird. People have left rock cairns at many places, but I did get off trail several times - once way off, can be seen on my route. So I added new cairns at spots where I lost trail.

This loop was described Jul 13th 2014 by cherieb with no logs since so for anyone reading and wondering if should do I would say yes if comfortable with trail finding, boulder hopping and granite sliding.

A bit tough yes, but many amazing views. Have uploaded a photoset - maybe motivate anyone contemplating this loop, or show others what is up here - enjoy!

ETA - corrected AEG from 1508 default to 1624 re my GPS route.

carried two rocks up, made good time at just over 3.0 mph avg. Got to west end of trail and decided to make a loop on roads back to trailhead. GPS said 5.0 miles by car, thought might be able to shortcut through some side streets - turned out could not due to all the gated communities. So west on Jomax, south on Pima, boring walk with noisy traffic east on Happy Valley, then north on Alma School . Ah well, nice morning for an almost flat longer hike to return. Cloudy and only in the 80s, very nice for June.
