been awhile since ive been on the haz site. Since the pandemic advised social distancing, i decided to do a trek to the happy camp water cistern that was made for travelers along the first ‘interstate’ of southern Az, the Old Butterfield Overland Stage & mail route. From the 60,000 49’ers traveling thru on their way to the gold fields of Cali, to the first native runners on these trails centuries if not thousands of years ago. There’s something still captivating walking this area with all the history that happened. You can easily see how the Yavapai and Apaches were able to easily ambush the stagecoaches along the route. Ive seen more than a few piles of rocks to the side of the road. Possibly some old graves of some unfortunate souls that were ambushed maybe? I started from the Shawmut TH, walked north about a mile to the bathrooms. then veered east and headed to Butterfield pass and then eventually cresting at Happy Camp cistern. Very few footprints and even better views! Spent some time pondering who’s who of history that wouldve walked these trails. Then backtracked my way back to the trailhead. This area is still closed to OHV & motorized traffic, THANKFULLY!! So you will have to earn the right to see Happy Camp now by doing the over 8-9 mile rt hike. Its one worth doing!!

after 2 years of getting denied online including several days camping out in Kanab to do the walk up lottery i finally got selected to hike to the Wave! The weather was perfect, a lil warm at 84 but i was stoked to finally go. we got a late start around noon but got to the wave in time with the sun directly overhead to get some photos in. I had my 10 year old daughter with us, so we went at her pace. the hike itself was moderate with lots of sand to slow the pace but the views were amazing!! we had lunch overlooking the wave and did a side trip to check out the dinosaur tracks. it was a bucket list hike worth waiting for!

been wanting to get back to Sedona and stretch the legs out a bit on some different trails. read up on Brins Mesa and figured it would be nice to do a good lil hike and then head to downtown Sedona just down the road from the Jordan TH for a brew & dinner afterwards. this is a great loop hike uo to the top of mesa, over soldier pass and down to devils kitchen. ill def be back to see some of the other trails in the area

did pima wash trail up to the stone building then went up behind it to guadalupe ridge to the top where it meets midlife crisis trail, took the short cut trail into hidden valley back onto national trail back to pima wash th then back to my place in tukee. i love this route during the weekends because way less people and its a great hike to get the blood pumping. if your so inclined take the midlife crisis trail along the ridge all the way to buena vista lookout and take natl trail, will be a lil over 10 miles of unpopulated hiking bliss on s.mtn

my first time on this trail and i must say i think this will be one of my faves in central phoenix! maybe 6 people on the trail, total!! im sure its much busier on the weekends but im digging the switchbacks for this ol silverback! lol lot easier on the knees. didnt set any PR’s, jus one step at a time....

well this ol silverback decided to climb camelback jan 8th, usually the day when most people quit their new years resolutions lol def a lil sore been awhile since i did echo, usually i do cholla but it was a pain trying to find a parking spot. found plenty at echo canyon which is a first too! o.0 time to get serious about getn some miles in

been a long hot summer, def put on some pounds from not bein able to hike. figured now that the holiday rush is gone from the trails, would be a good time to get to get back out there in the supes! i wasnt disappointed! started from having an almost empty TH, to perfect weather!

lil hike to burn off easter sunday excesses. temps are slowly turnin up in the valley, before long any hiking on s mtn will b done by 8 am. few folks on the trail for a weekday. saw a good sized rattler that wasnt in any hurry to leave the shade of the rock outcropping he was under, am glad he buzzed & let me know he was there!

we spent the weekend camping & hiking in rucker canyon. a very remote area but highly worth the drive if you love az history and solitude. We got to the campsite at the farthest end of rucker canyon in the chiricahuas with the exception of one other camper we had the place to ourselves. there was a battle that happened here between the apache chief Cochise & his 100 warriors against the us army that trailed them into this canyon in 1869 in the battle of the rocky mesa. How 32 soldiers got the medal of valor on that one cold rainy in end of october is questionable but several of them did perish there. Camp rucker was established not too much longer after that below that mesa to supply the army and their native scouts that were looking for geronimo and his renegade indians. The story of how Lt Rucker jumped in the flooded wash to try and save his comrade and how they both ended up drowning in 1870's is def a story that shouldnt be forgotten in Az history. to sum it up,it was a great weekend getn some hiking up in bear canyon and exploring old camp rucker, rucker canyon-another lil gem of southeastern az!

it had rained some the day before so we figured a lil trip to massacre falls was in order. got to the TH somewhat early and there was a few vehicles, was quite the opposite when we returned. o.0 I guess ALL the hikes in the western supes are getting pretty popular nowadays. was a nice cool afternoon for a hike, something about springtime in the supes with the desert in full bloom that awakens the senses! reached the overlook cliff and had lunch and watched all the hikers stream in. did a quick trip to the falls aka trickle then headed back to the TH which was packed upon our return. aw well any day out hiking in the crowded supes is still better than any day at work! :)

wanted to get a quick lil hike in the supes after the recent rains in the valley. done a few hikes from first water TH but had read up on some of the history that pertains to the garden valley area with the us army and apaches, so we decided to do the loop. was a great day to be out, not too busy and the weather was perfect. you can see why the apaches used the garden valley as a routine temporary home back in the day, so much history in this area, not always good but such is life. had lunch in the valley, checked out the the grinding holes overlooking the old salado ruins and made our down thru to where the trail split between the two buttes and took the left one down to the creek and back to the trail. another great day in the supes!

The trail opened up Nov 30 & i immediately put that hike into a must do for the weekend & i must say it is a hauntingly beautiful trail! Its def worth every step to go pay your respects to 19 of Arizona's finest. The 19 granite markers put a face & a story to each one of the fallen, you cannot help but get emotional thinking about theseyoung men and what happened. the trail itself was made to appreciate how tough of a job these young men had. We had left around 12:30 & made it to the memorial site in about 2 hours. the views are amazing once you crest the saddle. you can turn around from the observation deck at 2.85 miles in but i highly recommend doing .75 journey trail to the memorial site, its a very humbling experience once you get there. def one of my new favorite trails in Az.

Decided to do a day trip to historic Oatman massacre site. It had rained several days prior so Oatman rd from the south was pretty muddy. We decided to take the longer route and come in from the north off of Rocky point rd, it was a little muddy but passable. Stopped at Fourr cemetary site then proceeded to park at the southern end of the fieldsand walk to Oatman burial & massacre site. The fields were muddy,id recommend 4 wheel drive only if wanting to drive on the roads on the field. Made it up to the Massacre site, was very humid also humbling being there, not much has changed there since 1851, very remote. Def a day trip worth doing if your a fan of Az history.

Made a trip out to see Diablo Canyon this past june to checkout two guns and the death cave. Parts of the old zoo as well. Didnt make it up to the old ghost town by the railroad tho. Interesting history there in such a desolate place, the hike into the cave was def eerily interesting.

been awhile since ive been haz, now that fall is finally here, always good to get back out & get some hiking in. took pima wash t.h. to the stone building & took the trail up to the ridgeline just behind it. was a nice lil hike to look down into hidden valley. saw a desert toroise strolling along was a nice surprise. i came back down onto natl trail jus past fat mans pass. was def nice to have the trail to myself on such a busy outdoor spot :) looking forward to hitting the supes next week!
