Time to start getting out and researching areas for upcoming group trips that I am working on. This one definitely wont work! The views are awesome but the trail is a long and way too much for beginner backpackers.

We needed to get back on the trail for another backpacking trip. I wanted to show my wife that the desert is more than cactus so this trip was perfect. We took off Saturday afternoon and headed for the trail head. We arrived around 4pm and hit the trail. Our goal was to make it to Reavis and camp for the night or 2 but the weather and sun had different plans. We ended up camping about 1.5 miles from Reavis as it was too dark and we were too tired to continue on to Reavis. Sunday morning, woke up and nasty wind and cold temps. Hit up Reavis for water and decided to head back to the car. Definitely a cool place that I'd like to go back to...

Took a quick hike this morning. Started on the Circumference and then took a few trails to make it back to the parking lot. Really windy today but nice to get back out on the trail.

When I saw Te-wa post this trip I knew I had to go. It was definitely worth it.
My brother, wife and I packed up and took off Friday afternoon, arriving @ Knoll Lake about 8:30pm. We set up camp hoping there would be enough room for everyone who was coming up Saturday. Friday night the wind died down and it was a calm and peaceful night, with the exception of the hooting owl all night. Saturday morning arrived and the cold wind was back. We jumped @ the early opportunity to fish the lake but only ended up with 1 Rainbow. I had to keep him against my will as he took the hook in the throat. The rest of the HAZ crew arrived while we were making our pizza for lunch and then fun began.
Everyone went about their plans and then we had a great time around the fire with music, entertainment and drinks.
Sunday we woke up to the cold and wind and packed it up to head back to the TH.
It was a pleasure meeting everyone. We had a great time and are definitely looking forward to the next trip!
Thanks Te-wa for putting this together!

We had been planning this one for the past couple of months. Decided to get the family out on the trail for an early season fishing trip. This was definitely not the best trip for beginners, but it's an excellent destination trip with plenty to see and do.
We left early Friday morning @ 6am to get an early start for the weekend. Stopped in Payson @ the Knotty Pine Cafe for breakfast before hitting the trail. After arriving at the trail head, we split up the rest of the food and gear and made sure we had everything we needed. This was the first backpacking trip for 5 of our 8 and all had be warned of how tough this trip really is. Shortly after starting the climb everyone realized what they were in for. After 4.5 hours we all safely arrived to camp on the south side of the lake. The wind was ripping all weekend long and definitely made for some tough hiking and fishing conditions.
There is a lot of water on the rim from the latest storm and the snow is still really deep @ Knoll Lake. Most of the lake is ice free and the rest should be in the next week or so with the current outlook on temperatures.
I think we were a bit too early for the spawn but the fish are definitely hungry. We pulled out 4 decent rainbows while fishing Saturday but went ahead and released them for another time. Didn't get a chance to practice with my fly rod with the wind but there is always the next trip.
Overall it was a great trip, even with the windy and cold conditions.
This was my first time leading a group of 8 and cooking for more than 2-3 people. It was a great learning experience and even with the rough and tough trail, fun was had by all. Like all of my Rim trips, we followed up our trip with lunch at Cardo's Pizza before heading home. Definitely thinking about hitting this up again in the next couple of weeks.

After having a long long break with the Wedding any everything, decided to get back out and hit the trail. Nice easy over night trip in some cold temps. Grabbed 5 geocaches while on the trail as well.

Backpacked in to Knoll Lake for the weekend. I had to make a trip back up to FR300 to make a phone call and check on the status of some family. Ran into some bedded down elk on the way up. Nice easy stroll without a pack.

I decided to check on one of my favorite places this past weekend. While I had hoped for some solitude and quiet like the last time I backpacked into Knoll Lake while the FR300 was closed, it was a busy little place this weekend. We arrived at the trail head near the Tonto Fish Hatchery Friday afternoon around 4:30pm. We packed up all our gear, loaded the food, cleaned out the car, and suited up for the march into the lake. We left the trail head around 5pm and started our trek up the Rim. Each time I'm on this trip I swear to myself that I will not do it again, but yet this is the 3rd time up this trail, and definitely won't be the last I'm sure. I completely dragged ... up this section this trip. Took about 2.5 hrs to FR300 and then another 30 minutes to the South end of Knoll lake. We arrived around 8pm and started a fire and set up camp. This trip we decided to try something new. Friday Night we made some ribeye steaks over the coals of the fire, and baked potatoes in the coals of the fire, it was a nice change from the regular we eat, but who says you can't have dinner at 10pm...
Saturday morning we got up nice and early, tried hitting up the lake for some fish(sucked all weekend) but that didn't work out so well. Breakfast started with some pop tarts, then we made the scrambled eggs and potato burritos. The eggs turned out better than I had expected but its a lot of work compared to the usual oatmeal. Saturday was a busy day at the lake. A large group of backpackers arrived around 11:30 and the lake was pretty packed with fishermen and boats by that time. Only saw 3 fish caught the whole day.... dang bait fishing.
Saturday I had to run up to FR300 for cell service to see if our dad was going to be able to meet up with us @ the lake. Made it back to camp after a few hrs or exploring and then took it easy for the rest of the night.
Sunday morning we slept in and then packed up to hit the trail by 9am. Arrived back at the car around 11am and headed back to town.
It was a pretty good trip over all. A lot more people that I had expected but still a good time, except for the jackass that shoots off multiple rounds around 10pm each night. You can bet I will be back again this year, something about this lake keeps pulling me back.

We scrapped all our plans and changed them to check out this loop that Pencak posted last week. We arrived late at the Peralta Trail head Friday night, so we camped off the road before the trail head so we could get an early start. The wind picked up just as we called it a night and it was gusty all night long. Not alot of sleep was had Friday night. With the lack of sleep, we hit the trail around 8:45am Saturday morning. We hiked this trip clockwise, taking the Dutchman Trail #104, Whiskey Spring Trail #236, Red Tanks Trail #107, Coffee Flat Trail #108,and back to the Dutchman Trail #104 to the TH. We passed a lot of people on the Dutchman both headed in and out Saturday and assisted with some pictures for some older couples at the intersection of Whiskey Springs trail and Dutchman. Most of the trails were easy to follow until we started hiking along Red Tanks #107. This trail was over grown in some areas and we definitely have our catclaw battle marks to show for it. For me, this trail was the slow, dry, long portion of the whole trip. We stopped for lunch at the intersection of Hoolie Bacon and Red Tanks Trail around noon on Saturday and hung out under one of the few trees in the area for a couple hours. We continued down #107 and made up camp just before dark about a mile before the intersection with Coffee Flat Trail. Sunday morning we ate some oatmeal, packed up our gear and pushed out the next 8 miles back to the TH. The views were pretty cool along Coffee Flat Trail. We made it back to the TH around 1pm to find that someone attempted to break into my Jeep. The scum failed and nothing was taken but that'll still piss ya off. There was plenty of water along the whole loop and everything was very green. Not a lot of flowers or anything in bloom but my allergies were going crazy.

First time hiking in the Superstitions. We started out @ Peralta and went clockwise around the loop. We headed up Bluff Springs #235 to Terrapin Pass, then along Dutchman, back to Bluff Springs and to the car. Amazing views, lots of water and a good time.

I have been working way too much and needed a break so we decided to go camping up on the rim for some time away. I have been wanting to make it to Bear Canyon Lake to check is out, as I have never been. Just wanted to scout out the area a bit. A ton of people there at the camp areas heading into the lake, and even more @ the lake. Only hiked down to the water and around the west side a bit before the rain started falling again.

When we arrived on the Rim Friday night we tried to hit up Camp Area 9350, but it had a full sign out. Drove around and saw the deer and elk that night and ended up finding an opening in Camp Area 9354 a bit further west on FR300. There was quite a bit of rain off and on and the temps definitely dropped. All was actually nice and peaceful, until the crazy family with 8 kids showed up Saturday evening.

It was actually a nice relaxing time, even with all the people up there. Not a ton of ATV traffic and FR300 was actually tame compared to other weekends.

Friday night we headed out to See Canyon to do the See Canyon/Drew Loop. We camped near @ the creek side Friday night. Saturday morning we headed over to the Drew Trail via the Highline. The trail was pretty easy to follow. The storm started moving in just before heading up the Rim. About half way up we got hit with the rain, but it only lasted around 15 minutes. Once on the Rim we sat down for a bit and ate some lunch and discussed the remaining portion of our hike. There were a few geocaches in the area so we decided to hit those as well. After lunch we continued along FR300. Took Aspen Trail 411 to the Geocache, then continued along General Crook Trail to FR300 and the See Canyon TH North. Camped near the TH and FR300 for the night. It was another one of those sleep-less nights with all of the random hootin and hollerin well unto the night. The cars continued to race down the road but it seemed to all subside around 3AM. With little sleep we woke up around 6:30am, packed our gear and started on down See Canyon. It was very green and lush down the canyon, but also very humid. Bugs were driving us crazy! 3 hours and we were back to the car @ the south TH.

Took a buddy on his first backpacking trip this weekend. Hit the Horton/Derrick Parking around 9pm Friday night and started hiking on the Derrick Trail for a couple of hours. Friday night we covered around a mile and a half and found a spot to camp off trail. Using our headlamps we were able to spot light what we believe were elk, but we were unable to completely identify if they were Elk or Deer. Never saw the full body, mostly just the glowing blue/green eyes. Saturday morning we continued on the trail up to Horton Spring. The Derrick Trail is definitely over grown and blocked by many down trees in areas. We didn't see anyone until we got near the Spring. It was a very hot and humid trek across Derrick. We arrived at Horton Spring, made lunch and relaxed for a bit before heading partly down the creek to find a camping spot. We camped at the large camping spot with build rock tables and chairs, and tee pees(boy scouts?) Nice easy 2.5 miles back to the car Sunday morning. A few sprinkles here and there but that was it.

Started out @ General Springs and made our way down to the cabin and up the Fred Haught Trail. I was surprised at all of the water in the area. Small trickles and large pools all along Fred Haught. After a few miles we headed up the AZ Trail Section with the destination being East Clear Creek. Over all it was a very nice stroll to the creek. Arrived just before dark Friday night and made camp. It was one of the loudest and sleepless nights I have ever had in the outdoors. I think we managed to score 3 hours of sleep the whole night between the frogs and "monsters" in the woods. There was a lot of ruckus all around but after many attempts of taking a look, nothing was there. In the morning we ate breakfast and packed up with hopes of some fishing. The area was not as easy to move around as we had hoped so we called it a trip and started back toward General Springs. Over all it was a good trip, but very little sleep and 20 miles definitely takes a toll. Time to shed more gear weight.

We needed to get out and decided to take a day hike to Horton Creek. When we arrived there were a lot of cars at the trail head but not too many people on the trail. We spent most of the day slowly making our way up to the spring and checking out all small falls along the way. We ate our lunch @ the spring and then started making our way back to the car. It was a very nice stroll with some great scenery. And of course, like any of my other trips in the Payson area, We stopped for Pizza @ Cardo's Pizza. Triple Cheese & Pepperoni with a Dr. Pepper made for the perfect ending to an awesome day hike!
