A great day on the Bonanza Bill Trail #23 in the Blue Range Primitive Area. Trail was in good shape given the lack of use and offered solitude and a few vistas. Got to the Cow Flat trail #55 and decided to take that instead of continuing on Bonanza Bill which seemed to peter out. I wasn't interested in bushwacking in tall grass during snake season. Cow Flat trail was easy to follow. Turned around when the skies darkened with rain. *the dirt road in from rte 191 was in good condition. A truck is the way to go but a car can certainly make it to the trailhead. *Across the road from the trailhead, there was a nice dispersed camp spot on the AZ/NM state line.

What an amazing day hiking the Horse Ridge Trail #38 in the Blue Range Primitive Area, AZ. My hiking partner and I started out early to beat the heat. Made very good time on the well
maintained trail to Foote Creek in about two hours.
We started hiking east on
the Foote Creek Trail, not knowing we passed the junction of the Horse Ridge Trail and Foote Creek Trail because the sign fell off the tree it was nailed into. I placed the sign
against the tree. We had a quick snack at the creek and made our way up in about 2.5 hours. It was my first hike in the Blue Range Primitive Area and certainly will not be the last. It's hard to stay away from the vast remoteness and beauty this area is know for.

A good huff and puff hiking Elden Lookout trail #4. There was a thunderstorm threat the entire time. Trail was in good shape for the most part with a few erosion issues and rebar sticking out of worn out wooden steps as well as the ground in some places. There was a trail maintenance team addressing erosion issues which was good to see.

I had a very enjoyable hike up Morman Mountain via the Mormon Mountain Trail #58. I started from Dairy Spring Campground. Plenty of trail parking. Easy to follow trail. A few blowdowns but easy to go around. The trail is in excellent condition. No view on top but a nice view of Mormon Lake during the climb to the top. I liked that the Arizona Trail joins the Mormon Mountain Trail at a junction about .25 from trail parking which gave me an option to add on mileage. I took advantage of that by going south on the AZT about nine miles. All in all an nice day out.

The Bear Wallow Wilderness has been on my radar for quite sometime. I hiked the Reno Trail, Bear Wallow Trail and Gobbler Point Trail finishing with a road walk on FR 8154 and Rte 25 to make a 14 mile loop. The weather was sunny and about 40 degrees at the start. The Reno trail is in phenomenal shape with zero blow downs. Either animals or humans are using this trail and keeping it extremely easy to follow!

The Bear Wallow Wilderness was an area I wanted to hike for some time. I started my hike on the Reno Trail, which I've done a trip report already.
After I came to the junction of Reno Trail and Bear Wallow Trail (sign on tree) I preceeded going west on the Bear Wallow Trail to Gobblers Point Trail. It was a beautiful sunny morning in the lower 50s. The first half mile on the Bear Wallow Trail was fine. It was an easy to follow trail with no blow downs and not too much overgrowth. The trail follows the Bear Wallow Creek so the consistent sound of the water was enchanting. After about a half mile on the Bear Wallow Trail (from Reno Trail) the trail got extremely overgrown with tons of poison ivy. The trail would be easy to follow and then totally disappear. Many blowdowns to go over, under or around. Many creek crossings (Bear Wallow Creek) to contend with. Saw a bear lumbering my way on the trail. Easy to get out of it's way by bushwacking up and around. Some erosion issues on a few of the creek's banks where I assumed the trail was higher than the creek but couldn't get up until I cleared the eroded area. What I described was the consistent scenario until I saw a few cairns that marked the junction of Bear Wallow and Gobbler Point Trail. There is no sign so keep your eyes peeled so you don't miss the junction if you are planning on continuing up Gobblers Point trail. **Creek is running really well*** I highly recommend wearing gaiters for overgrowth and poison ivy.

The Bear Wallow Wilderness has been on my radar for quite sometime. As I described in my past trip reports of this area, I combined the Reno Trail, Bear Wallow Trail and Gobblers Point Trail. I also included a walk on FR 8154 and Rte 25 to make a 14 mile loop. I hiked clockwise starting on the Reno Trail to Bear Wallow Trail to Gobblers Point Trail.
At the junction of Bear Wallow and Gobblers Point Trail, marked with cairns only, I proceeded north on the Gobblers Point Trail. Steady incline to the top. Hardly a trail to follow, many blow downs to go over under or around. 80% of this trail was non-existent and became a bushwack. I followed the GPS track as best as possible but definitely had to rely on my own navigation skills to find my way to the top. The switch backs the last half mile where undefined. I came to a wall of New Mexico Locust with thorny branches to go through. The shrubs were so dense I was a bloody mess when I finally came to a clearing and was on trail (100 yrds) to the end. I continued with a road walk on FR 8154 and Rte 25 until I met with my vehicle at the Reno trail on Rte 25. *** If you are planning to do Reno Trail, Bear Wallow Trail and Gobblers Point Trail my advice, bring your A game. I do not recommend any trails in the Bear Wallow Wilderness unless you are extremely fit, self-reliant and have not only a GPS track but smart navigational skills which will definitely come in use. This hike was extremely challenging and it could get ugly fast.

A beautiful day hiking Silver Peak in the Chiricahua Mountains. Trail is in very good shape overall. Got to a few sections where floppy grass was over the trail but very easy to negotiate. Saw a beautiful Sonoran King Snake. Views from the top were breathtaking! All in all a great day out.

Hiked Bill Williams Mountain via the Bill Williams trail # 21. If you are not a snow hound I do not recommend this hike. 1/3 to the summit has about two feet of snow!
The trail starts out very nice and easy. About half way up I hiked into patches of snow. Then 1/3 up all snow. Had microspikes, wish I had my snow shoes but fortunately I never post holed so it was a comfortable bushwack up. My ascent was easier just pushing my heels into the snow going down the same way I went up. All in all, I loved it for it was a great workout.

A beautiful hike up to Chiracahua Peak in the Chiricahuas Mountains. I will only report on the Mormon Ridge Trail #269. My hiking partner and I started on Turkey Creek Road. Had to cross Turkey Creek at the start but plenty of places to cross without getting feet wet. The trail very recently recieved some serious trail maintenance and is in phenomenal shape to Morman Saddle which is where Morman Canyon Trail #352 and Morman Ridge Trail #269 meet. Be prepared for some steady uphill climbing the entire way till Morman Saddle then the incline eases slightly after that. Unfortunately after Morman Saddle trail maintenance on Morman Ridge Trail #269 halted. My partner and I continued on Morman Ridge Trail #269 to Chiracahua Saddle where Morman Ridge Trail #269 and Crest Trail #270B meet. Between Morman Saddle and Chiracahua Saddle lots of blow downs to contend with including patches of deep snow on north facing slopes. Once at Chiracahua Saddle we continued on Crest Trail # 270B to Chiracahua By-Pass #270D to Crest Trail # 270C to Chiracahua Peak Trail #270A
to the Chiracahua summit. Went back the same way. All in all a perfect day in the Chiricahuas. ***Turkey Creek road was in good shape, any car can travel to the trailhead but there is limited parking so that can be a concern.

If you want a good up-hill workout head over to #521 Ryal Canyon Trail near Camp Verde. Not a long trail at about 2.5 miles but it was a consistent grind to the intersection of #511 Box T trail. The views through out hike were really outstanding especially to the north where I could see Sedona and the San Francisco mountains and the Mogollon Rim to the east. The trail was well defined with some loose rock and scree sections. There were a few gates to go thru and passed at least two water troughs so this area definitely houses cattle but didn't see any on this trip. At the intersection of Ryal Canyon trail and Box T trail there is a seasonal creek that was running. My partner and I had a snack and went back the same way we came. I wanted to check out Box T trail to make a loop hike but it was getting late so that will have to wait for another time.**Route Scout set for one way only... not round trip.

Nice day of hiking on the JF trail from Tortilla 2WD to Tortilla Pass and back (Fr 213 and FJ trail). Once on the JF Trail I settled into a steady pace. Did get off trail a handful of times but located cairans quickly and continued on course. I "beefed up" the cairns in some places making it much easier to navigate on my return. Numerous sections of catclaw but nothing too difficult to go through or around. Clover Spring running good. Lost the trail most frequently the last half mile before Tortilla Pass but corrected easily enough. The creek closest to Tortilla Pass was flowing well. I love this trail and certainly the solitude that comes with back country hiking in the Supes.
