| no partners | | The weather was so nice up in the Payson area yesterday that I decided to stay the night. I made a couple calls to the local motels and all were either booked or around a hundred bucks. About that time I was passing Wal-Mart so in I went and bought an air mattress and a pump for 20 bucks. This and the sleeping bag in the back of my Cherokee made a great bed. I parked it at the Pine Trailhead and hit the hay. It rained off and on throughout the night. I cracked open the windows a tad to let the cool air in. It was so nice that I slept until 9:30am! Wow, I never do that even in the comfort of my own home.
Anyway once up I headed down to the Tonto Natural Bridge and then afterwards decided to try the Pine Canyon Trail. I didn't have any idea where it went nor did I have a map but what the heck. The ground was still a little mushy from the rain in spots but was manageable.
After a couple miles I passed Dripping Springs and kept on going. I didn't have a set stop in mind however a sign did say that Hwy 87 was 7 miles away so I figured at worse case that would be my turn around spot. Then about 4 miles in I came to a sign that said "East Rim Trail". It looked to go straight up. I'm always up for an adventure so I gave it a go. Holy Moly was I in for a treat! What the Heck?!? Awesome! And I thought the Promontory Butte trail up from the Highline was steep. This one is even steeper and then it has some nice rock scrambling about 3/4 the way up. It was great and the route is well marked with red tags on the trees. Up top the views were spectacular and I made my way across to look over the other edge and then headed back down.
I have got to go back and do this one again sometime! Loved it! |
