| no partners | | Since the Wind Cave hike went so well 2 weeks ago, we decided to take the kids up the Col. Devin Trail to the top of the Mogollon Rim. We made our way straight to the top staying on the Col. Devin Trail and not any of the Railroad Tunnel trail. The last half mile was brutal, especially with 2 hungry toddlers whining for lunch. It was well worth the wait once we got to the top, however, since there wasn't the usual need to remind the kids to "stop fidgeting and eat your lunch".
After some rest after lunch, we made our way back down and found the junction with the Railroad Tunnel Trail and took that. The last section of the trail up to the tunnel was again brutal, but worth it once the kids had a chance to play around there. The descent on the narrow, faint section of the upper trail was a little tricky, but once we got back on the Col. Devin Trail, it was smooth sailing back to the TH. On our way down we met a Brit on his way up with 2 funny dogs that the kids got a laugh from. The one dog was carrying a stick in his mouth that was about 5" diameter and 2 feet long.
Most of the color in the leaves at these elevations has faded, but there's still a little left. The streams are still running nicely, which makes for some nice white noise while you're hiking at the lower sections of the trail. Both kids has a great time which is all I could ask for. Great way to burn off some turkey. |
