I met up with the Berkmeister nice and early and headed out. We started hiking around 6:30 and somehow a short mile into the trip took a wrong turn. We were talking and getting things rolling when a mile and a half later we came to a junction with no signs. This seemed odd and then I thought about it and realized it had been quite some time since we had seen an AZT sign. We looked at the map and decided it would be best to head back and find our error.

The spot we missed doesn't have a sign pointing the way so it was an easy mistake but it cost us 3 miles. From here it was smooth sailing for quite a ways. I really enjoyed seeing the old Railroad bed from previous days of logging. Berk and I kept a strong steady pace and would switch lead from time to time. Then around 18 miles into the journey Berk started to feel sick. His stomach was not right and he was developing a small blister on the side of his foot.

We took a couple breaks in hopes of him feeling better but things weren't improving very fast. He had cached some water and food at the Pine Grove Trailhead which was 3 miles ahead. He said to go on and that he would be fine to make it to the cache after a rest. The plan was for me to go to the end at Marshall Lake and return to pick him up at Pine Grove. If he got there sooner than expected then he would attempt to hitchhike back to his car at Allen Lake and meet me at Marshall Lake.

Fortunately, we had cell service and were able to communicate the whole time. I went on and in time his condition improved. He let me know when he made it to the cache and by then he was feeling much better. Berk hitched a ride in no time and we met at my Jeep around 5pm.

It was a bummer that Berk didn't feel so hot but it was great hiking with him for the first 21 miles. Also it was nice to see that he got his color back by the time I saw him at Marshall. :)

This section was easy to follow with the exception of the one turn. 30 passages done, 13 to go!
