I also knocked on a nearby Ranchers door and asked if he would be willing to help me out with a shuttle. He obliged and the plan was for me to hike this today. Then after he was done with church in Kearny he would pick me up in Kelvin and take me back to the Freeman Road trailhead. I knew it was going to be a scorcher so I headed out early. I was on the trail just before 5am. I would say whoever is the trail steward for section 15a is doing a fantastic job. Wow, was it in perfect shape and well signed. 15b wasn't bad either but 15a is clearly being VERY well cared for.
Along the way I saw 3 deer, a pack of javalina, a bunch of cattle, several jack rabbits and a bob cat. The bob cat didn't see me and was chasing a rabbit. I believe it was to be his breakfast.
The terrain changes about mid point and it turns from a flat desert hike to a very scenic hilly hike. Towards the end of the passage there is a newly constructed trailhead on the Florence-Kelvin Highway. This is not to be confused with the end of the passage. That also has a new trailhead that is not quite finished. The end does have the parking lot in place now and looks to be nearing completion. My GPS track for this section is current and complete for the newly redesigned finish to passage 15.
When I reached the end the rancher was there waiting for me. I offered him some money for his gas and time but he refused to take it. He only asked that I not tell everyone doing the trail about him because he would never get anything else done. Naturally I asked him if he would be willing to do the same thing for me on section 14. He smiled and said that would be fine. What a cool cowboy!
I would not recommend doing this section until it cools off. It is HOT and rugged out there! |
