| no partners | | Second day in the park and I found my first Very Special Place.  But we will get to that in a minute...
I had a hike planned for today, but decided to postpone it until tomorrow. After a very busy day yesterday and not much sleep for the past two nights, I felt like resting today.
Did a few things around the house, then took a walk to the village - 1/4 mile or so from my place. Hit a couple viewpoints, Hopi House, and Verkamp's. Took a different route home and wandered needlessly through the maze of employee housing before finally arriving back at my neighborhood.
Saw more elk - they are all over the place! - and cars pulled haphazardly to the side of the road, photographing them.
Finally, around 4:10 I headed out to Shoshone Point ... this place isn't exactly a secret, but it sure feels like it! If I ever have a first-time visitor to the Canyon, this is where I will take them first. Forget the crowded drive-up viewpoints - take them to this nondescript TH, stroll for a pleasant flat mile through the woods, then all of a sudden there it is. No paved walkways, no giftshops, no guardrails ... just you and the Canyon. I was on the trail and at the lookout for two full hours, all alone. Didn't see anyone else until I was on my way out ... amazing.
I can definitely see this becoming my regular daily walk when I don't hike anything else.
While I was there, I was buzzed many times by the swallows, and saw a pair of Peregrines soaring below me. Also today I put up my hummingbird feeder, and within an hour had a gorgeous Rufous Hummer feeding there.
As a side note, I am living without tv - kind of - for awhile ... can't get my Dish set up til next week. I am a big tv watcher, so this is very strange for me ... miss the news the most. I am watching one movie a night from my small dvd collection ... last night was "The Hangover", tonight is "Baby Mama". |
