| no partners | | Rode the shuttle out towards Hermit's Rest. Planned to walk from Monument Creek past the Abyss, to Mohave Point and get back on shuttle. That's only two flat miles ... but I didn't have ANY fuel in my tank today, so I ended up hopping the shuttle at the Abyss and enjoying my air-conditioned ride back home.
More of the same today - storms over the North, but just clouds and a few drops here...
Walked to and from the shuttle, too.
Update - 6pm - now it's raining ... woohoo! |

Left home about 5pm in a light rain, which stopped by the time I reached the Bright Angel Lodge.
Immediately spotted a California Condor sitting on the sharp diving board of rock below Lookout Studio - best view was from lowest viewpoint at the Studio.
This was a huge moment for me - the Condor was in my top five wishlist for birds.
It was number 97 - a nine year old female hatched in Boise, from what I read - and I spent the better part of an hour watching her preen and drink from small puddles.
Rainbows kept popping up all the Canyon during this time as well.
I really wanted to see her fly, but eventually I tore myself away and headed home...
As I was walking my path through the quiet forest, I stopped for a moment to take off my sunglasses and when I glanced to my left, I saw what appeared to be a boulder sporting a huge set of antlers!
That incongruity quickly resolved itself into a massive bull elk laying behind a boulder and staring at me from ten feet away. I involuntarily said "Oh!", and after meeting his eyes for a moment, I nodded and turned warily and walked on. He never moved, but everytime I looked back he was still staring at me until the path turned a corner and he was out of sight.
Wow. |
