One car in the lot when I arrived. As I was departing the trailhead, a silver van pulled up along the road and four or five people jumped out and headed in opposite directions, and the van took off - very sketchy looking.
Walked down the trail, enjoying the Ponderosa Pine-scented air and wildflowers. Found what appeared to be medium-sized cat tracks, fairly fresh, in the mud. Passed the two people who belonged to the car on their way out.
Halfway down the trail I was startled to hear gunfire - quite a bit of it - coming from back near the trailhead. I whipped out my phone to call it in, but had no service ... five minutes later I reached the rim and was able to call. Reached NPS dispatch, and was informed that what I was hearing was Rangers playing with guns in the woods ... he may have called it "training".
Got to the point and enjoyed the view - though I was bothered by gnats, which I first noticed the day before at Cedar Ridge.
The Colorado is still running nice and brown - looked like chocolate milk above the rapids, and the rapids were foamy whitish.
On my way out, I noticed a young woman walking towards me ... was thinking that she was probably a local - just because she was there, at Shoshone, and because she was alone and just didn't look like a tourist. She turned out to be one of the camping associates at my store - so I did end up seeing someone I knew on the hike - just not the someone I expected!
Large deer-jam on the way home. |
