| partners | | After visiting Buck Mountain Lookout a couple weeks back, we noticed another wooden Lookout Tower on the list (this one) so we put it on our to do list and it went to the top of the list when we saw the hiking trail up to it. After lots of miles but almost no AEG last weekend in Aravaipa, we headed north to get a some AEG on this trail without a whole lot of miles.
The change of the Bootlegger area from campground to day use has made staging this hike a lot easier. There were several other groups in the area wondering about where the trailhead was (obviously non-HAZers!) and we directed them as best we could. We made our way down, crossed the creek and came up right at the trail sign, so I guess it wasn't that hard to find.
We took our time grinding up the hill, through a plethora of Arizona Penstemons which lined the trail heavily through the middle third of the hike. At higher elevations, we saw some Firecracker Penstemons mixed in as well, and the chirps of buzzing hummingbirds was almost constant as we made our way up.
We took a break after attaining the rim, then moseyed on up to the Lookout Tower. The lookout had just come on duty for the season this week, and we had a nice visit with him. About the only color we saw up on top was a bunch of Claret Cup Hedgehogs in the immediate vicinity of the tower. After a lengthy break, we headed back down, passing a couple of other groups on their way up.
About the only downside to this hike was having to hear the traffic on 89 while going up and down. |
