PSAR was doing a search at Peralta Trailhead and closed the main lot so every had to park in the overflow lot. I signed in and headed off on the Dutchman trail planning on hiking up Trap Canyon and taking a side canyon up on Music Mountain. I made a few stops along the way to check out Whiskey Spring (which was flowing for the 1st time) and look for the area of the old biplane wreck. As I approached Trap Canyon I decided to check out an alcove and located Bob Ward's Caverna Con Casa. I knew it was in the area but that was almost too easy. i dropped into Trap Canyon and hiked up through the flowing creek. I forgot how nice it is in there. I looked around some and started up the side canyon toward Sheep Spring. After clawing my way up the side canyon I decided it was too ugly even for me. I informally named it "Never Again" Canyon and decided to check out the cliff band north of Trap Canyon. The cliff band was loose, rocky and choked but pleasant compared to Never Again Canyon. I was approaching the last alcove and decided it was a bust and started to turn back. At the last second something caught my eye. It was a wall with an opening near the top? Now it was game on and I clawed my way up. This looked like a shelf for storage or a bunk. I walked farther north and found ruins which are in rough shape. I walked still farther north and found small storage areas pretty much still in tact. These are not visible from the trail, the area looks like nothing from below and the hike up is a little ugly so I can see why these probably haven't seen many visitors. On the hike out I stopped at La Barge Spring to get some water and noticed three hikers up ahead. At first they seemed to be moving pretty fast so I kicked it up a notch to see if I could catch them. Turns out it was Kyle John & Rachel. We hiked out together and made good time back to the trailhead. HAZ hikers are awesome. |
