| no partners | | Well...this is the big one! The one hike, I've been training for - after all, I'd be a fool to attempt this "cold turkey", as little hiking as I've done this Summer. My son and I came up Friday to get acclimated to the elevation. Mother Nature threw in a wild card though, just my luck and it snowed on Thursday, up to 10-14" on the top.
People mentioned it was a difficult hike and being our first attempt, the snow and ice made it even harder. In fact, there was snow on the trail all the way up to the saddle. People were coming down saying "it's too icy", especially before the saddle area and I started to second guess this hike. But, we decided to push on and focus on the ultimate goal, of getting to the top. Many of the regulars had crampons and the rest of us made due, I saw plenty of wet butts coming down the hill, after failed attempts of negotiating the ice. We estimated, loosing an hour on the way up, due to the ice. Amazingly, the elevation did not effect us, until we headed back down and I got an awesome altitude head ache
Once at the saddle we stopped and enjoyed the rocky wind break and had some food. The remainder of the climb was arduous, my IT bands were starting to speak up "hey stupid....." the rock step's did not make it any easier, especially coming back down.
This was my first trip, without that bulky Canon camera, for as, my new IPhone worked incredibly, I was very impressed with it.
This was a great experience and I'm greatful to have shared it with my son! - we'll look forward to next Spring to try it again.
We lodged at the Snow Bowl Ski cabins off Hwy 180 - they were quaint and cozy. The food was Incredible! seriously, it was great! |
