In brief:
TH: 0641
Summit: 1011
TH: 1340
On the road at 0355 and made Flag by 0600. Quite a few cars already in the lot at Snow Bowl. Very mild weather. Shorts and t-shirt all the way to the top. Almost no wind, and as a result the summit was swarmed with gnats. Everyone on the top was quickly putting on jackets and leggings to keep them off. Quite hazy, but no clouds and no worry for lightening.
Experienced a real come-down during the hike. Heretofore when on a popular trail I have always enjoyed passing more hikers than pass me. Always. But not yesterday. Concerned to find myself dead even on the final ridge just below the summit, two young guys blew by me with 50 meters left to go. It is like the actor Paul Newman once said, "This gettin' old thing ain't for sissies".
Did enjoy a particularly nice moment on the summit by sharing it with a fine 18 year old that made me dizzy and weak in the knees. I have seen photos where other HAZers have enjoyed a Kilt Lifter or other beverage in a high place. I took one of those little 50ml taster bottles of my favorite Scotch Whisky, the Bowmore 18 year single malt. Wasn't about to hump a whole fifth of liquor up there in a glass bottle, and I wasn't going to put such a fine whisky in a plastic bottle, though by the reception of the idea by the others on the summit it would not have gone to waste. The little sip did help to sooth my wounded pride.
Grabbed a nap in the truck before driving home. Arrived at 1755, for a 14 hour round trip. |
