Modest elevation but unobstructed 360 views of Four Peaks, Black and Elephant Mountains, Pinnacle Peak, northern Mazatzals including Mount Ord and beyond. Busy, mostly families hiking with kids. Lots of bicycles going up to the saddle and back or down on other side to the Upper Ranch Trail. Summit trail from saddle is steep, narrow and rocky but short and worth the effort. Some hikers chose to go north at the saddle to the lower "scenic" vista overlooking the ruins at the ranch. Diverse plant life with many yuccas including soap tree and hairy. Also jojoba, prickly pear, creosote, compass barrel, saguaro, palo verde et al. Stayed until after sunset, a no-no according to TH rules. Was the last of two remaining vehicles in the mammoth parking lot. |
