A middle-aged man in shorts came up to the spot a short time after us, and began chuckling. He said he lives in Ahwatukee and came up here three days ago after park rangers tore down the cairn and posted a metal sign saying, "Leave the mountain and rocks as you find them." The man was chuckling because the cairn had been rebuilt, the sign torn down and mutilated and placed in a heap beside the new pile of rocks.
The viewing today was not good because of heavy haze, yet even haze has its moments. To the west it formed layers of varying hues just along the Estrellas and to a lesser degree south toward Antelope Peak south of Casa Grande. Need some wind to sweep that stuff away.
We had snacks on top and headed down at 5 o'clock with gorgeous views in front of us. Didn't see a soul on the descent until we hit the flats by the Bursera turn-off. Arrived back at the TH in near darkness. Very nice hike on a wonderful winter afternoon. |
