Having obtained some vague directions from Brent and Preston to a set of cliff dwellings near Workman Creek Falls, I've been "chomping at the bit" for a return visit to this area. With the weekend forecast calling for rain showers, we became a little bit alarmed during our early Friday morning drive towards Aztec Peak as the skies became threatening. We drove through a good down pour near the Salt River Bridge along Hwy 288. By the time we reached the TH along FR487, mostly clear blue skies were to be had! This wasn't our only surprise at the TH since parking was at a premium with close to 15 vehicles at the road closure barrier.
We made our way along FR487 towards the Falls and passed some successful wild turkey hunters carrying their trophies back to the TH. At the Falls we encountered a Rock Climbing Club setting up their ropes.
As instructed by Brent, we ascended the scree path near the Falls, up to a wooded shelf above FR487. We made our way across the shelf towards the cliffs and searched high and low for the cliff dwellings and a reported granary. After an hour or two of searching, we gave up the hunt and decided to implement our back-up plan to take in the autumn colours. Hiked our way along FR487 up towards the peak...
Our back-up plan more than made up for the failure to locate the ruins! |
