Information about this from a blog, and it is a pretty nice hike and unexpected in this area. However, I didn't alot enough time. I drove in on a desert garden of a two track, 80% 2wd but a couple of washouts and very rocky; beautiful desert with statuesque well spaced cholla, green grass and stately saguaros.
From the parking spot overlooking broad and fluted mud walls of lower Copper Creek, took the washed out road down into the wash. Vehicle tracks here. In about 10 min things started to narrow up, with a few logs wedged above the floor. The walls were from about 20-30 feet to over 80 feet easily in places. The conglomerate, with a sandy and boulder strewn floor free of obstacles. It was starting to get boring, then a little green on the walls and some water. After a lovely area of wet seep walls, it narrowed up more and now hanging gardens of ferns and enough water to change the silence with little rivulets. Extraordinary thru here. My information had it that a chockstone upcanyon was impassable, but I dropped my pack and squirmed through the pile, and came back down sliding along the wall to the handy huge cottonwood trunk wedged in there. But as my Jeep was at the bottom retraced my steps. This would be a great easy trek with a car shuttle. I had to then run home, got to my mom's 5 minutes after my cousins had arrived. So, I stayed out of trouble but got a good hike in and a place that definitely delivered more than I expected. |
