There were so many gnats I almost turned around 2 miles into my hike. The only thing that kept me going forward were the gnats behind me. They were absolutely driving me CRAZY!! I was talking to myself, more than once I screamed in total frustration and the thought literally crossed my mind to roll around in the dirt like elephants do to rid themselves of insects. Lucky for me I didn't run into Satan on this hike because I would have gladly sold my soul to rid the place of gnats 
I combined 4 trails for a large loop around the park. I parked at the Slate TH. I went CCW and it is a great loop and I would love to do this again, without the gnat of corse. I didn't run into another person all day! 
It felt like I flew around this loop, I'm sure it was the gnats chasing me
