I just couldn't wait until the spring to make it back there. Made the first crossing of Workman creek in about 1 hour. The water was really low, barely a trickle. I had to take my boots off and roll up the pant legs over my knees to cross the creek back in March! The leaves in this little valley were changing and were beautiful. Then you hike uphill for awhile before making the long switchbacking downhill. All together took me 3 hours with a good break at the creek. The campsite was empty as I suspected since there were no cars in the parking lot other than mine. There was a fair amount of firewood to be found with just a little work. I hiked and hopped rocks downstream for quite a way. There are some wonderful pools down there but not too many fish. I caught three trout but kept only one for dinner. I made a few improvement to the fire pit and re-installed the donated grate on one end (keyhole)firepit. It worked very well. So well in fact, I think I'll leave the camp stove at home next time. The night was cool but not cold and the morning came all too soon. After a hearty breakfast and some more fishing upstream, I decided to make the long uphill journey. All in all another fine trip to Hells Hole. |
