I'm on the Friends of Agua Fria National Monument mailing list and went to their orientation last weekend for their annual wet-dry mapping exercise. They seek about 40 people to handle about 15 segments and after hearing the details I signed up to assist Tom who was responsible for the Little Ash Creek tributary - he was very familiar with the route and requirements.

We met at 4AM (!) at Cordes Junction, dropped a car near Arcosanti, and then went up to the start where the creek goes under Dugas Road. The procedure consists of noting the start and stop points for the presence of water in the creek drainage. The tried and true method is to record waypoints with pen and paper while also storing them in the GPS unit itself. This is pretty tedious though it becomes natural enough as you go along. Luckily I had the easier job of reading the numbers out. I announced to all I intended to make my own log by taking pictures of start and stop points then syncing to my (separate) GPS track (No pencils, no GPS interactions). Those are the results you see in my GPS log. Though I think this is a better method probably it's just an intermediate step on the way to some "all-in-one" cell phone app.

Walking was fine....more wet than dry. Riparian and deadfall obstacles were few. At two different locations a pair of hawks took exception to our presence and complained loudly and persistently while swooping overhead. When we got to the bottom of our creek segment, Tom knew the cross country route back to the other car. We stopped in at the Arcosanti cafe to drop off our data to the organizers. Probably I'll get a big check in the mail later.
