| no partners | | The Samaniego Hills are the bumps a little SW of Picacho Peak in Ironwood Forest National Monument. It's a cool area with lots of nice open Sonoran desert and a few dirt tracks; main access from Phoenix is the Sasco Road through Red Rocks. Normally you have to ford the Santa Cruz River but it's completely dry at the moment.
Part of IFNM's raison d'etre is to protect archaeological sites and the Los Robles Archaeological District is in these hills. By now I've found the main places by trial and error but today, with the lower temps, I thought I'd just go out for a stroll and see if I'd bump into anything new.
It worked out pretty well: I noticed some isolated petroglyphs on some low rocks and followed them up to an impressive overlook with a nice concentration of glyphs. From here I continued along and visited a couple hill tops, saddles, and washes. Pretty nice walking (disappointed to find foxtail flourishing in the low desert) but I didn't see any more petroglyphs until I got back near the initial concentration.
Saw a border patrol truck and I've see signs of migrant activity near here before, but everything was clean as a whistle on my loop today. |
