| no partners | | I parked on Cave Creek Rd and walked up the jeep road just north of Blackjack Point....it's a quick way to gain the big expanse of mesa that stretches to the New River Mountains. I think most of it is called Cook Mesa but I headed over to a narrower section called "The Island".
Nice country with green grass (and no cows at the moment). Easy walking on jeep roads (though it would be not so easy driving), and I stayed on them much of the time. I also walked along cliff bands and to a mesa point overlooking the New River....but didn't see any ruins or glyphs...not even a pottery sherd.
I made it a loop by dropping down to the New River drainage and following it back toward it's origin. For a rocky creek bottom it was pretty easy walking though it was awful hot and I was pretty slow. Went through 100oz of water 60oz of gatorade and some treated puddle water.
Glad I went up there but I'd think most interesting would be a Topohiker-style 30 miler on the jeep roads to really cover the area. |
