| no partners | | I noticed a nice looking shelf on the south side of upper Squaw Creek opposite a nice Indian ruin I'd been to, and I wanted to check it out.
I drove up the Seven Springs Road to FR602 and about a mile up the Forest Road. I walked the road a ways and then cross-country up to the mesa/shelf which sits above Cavness Hole and Cavness Spring. This is a nice area and a likely looking spot to build a Hohokam-era village.
I almost skipped the "south finger" which is separated from the main shelf by a cut. Glad I didn't: the ground was loaded with pottery sherds. I had to poke around a while before I found the habitation site, which was heavily overgrown with shrubs and the recent explosion of grass. Quite a few rooms I think and some recognizable straight runs but no stacked walls visible under the veg.
I went over to the main shelf which turned out to be disappointing. I didn't see any cultural signs till I was starting to climb the eastern hill to leave - then a few sherds and a single rock pile/ruin.
Over the hill then back on the jeep road. |
