I decided to take him to the Brooklyn area on eastern Perry Mesa where I know there is plenty to see. I planned a route which included a couple new (for me) hilltops as well as some favorites.
The roads on the mesa are a little beat up after the recent rains but were dry today. I was surprised to find the Bloody Basin area pretty crowded - saw about 20 pickup trucks, most hauling trailers with ATVs. I think these were hunters in a limited season but I don't know for sure. Didn't hear any shots - we did spot a white tail at a distance during our walk.
The grass was thick and we discovered a plant adept at sending black spikes (seeds?) through shoe vents and socks and directly into your skin. Possibly this burnished AZ's reputation for sticky things in the mind of a foreigner.
Our loop passed a few small ruins (low stacked stone walls and pottery pieces) - this area is loaded with them - but the new hilltops were good for exercise and scenery only. We also passed several major ruins before finishing at the cliff band and it's petroglyphs. One interesting episode: when I went around a corner at the bottom of the cliff band I saw a bundle of black and white fur move quickly no more than 10' away. It took me about half a second to process 1. that's a skunk, 2. he has rotated into "firing position". I backed up in a hurry and suggested to Joerg this would be a good time to climb up the cliff and go get some pie. |
