| no partners | | I was reading the paper Saturday morning vaguely thinking about heading up to Flagstaff for the day when I saw an article about back country hikes in Petrified Forest National Park - a new emphasis for the Park. 20 min later I was on my way.
I stopped at the visitor center and asked about the various hikes they were recommending. When I said I liked to find petroglyphs I was told it might be best to just drop off the rim at the Painted Desert Inn and just "look in the washes". I figured good enough.
Having never walked in the area before I found it very cool - petrified logs everywhere - and you can just go where ever you want (stark contrast to the road side stops in the park where you have to stay on the pavement). I wandered around a while and eventually found a spot next to the Lithodendron Wash that had nice petroglyphs. I continued, making a loop, looking for more but didn't find any.
Now, back at the PC, I see a number of HAZers have walked in this area before on the way to something called Onyx Bridge, and a few passed by the same petroglyphs. I conclude I was lucky to find them and there probably weren't many others I missed. Long way to drive for a short walk but I enjoyed the day out. |
