i told jack that i wanted him to show me the hackberry spring/garden valley loops when he got down here, along with some of the stuff he finds in his explorations
jack, kingsnake and minermike were all available to hit the trail from the horse lot this morning
first time hiking with mike, nice to meet you!
took an old road to the remains of first water ranch
a corral, tin roofed cement slab, bottom half of a windmill and a large water tank were interesting to check out
from there, a trail dropped into first water creek, where there was quite a bit of flowing water and several good pools
enjoyed hiking down the creek bed
saw a large alcove that would make a decent shelter
explored a side canyon and another wash before hitting the higher canyon walls near hackberry spring
very lush through here with some nice cottonwoods just turning yellow
checked out the spring
climbed up toward hackberry butte and took a side trail to a mine on the hillside
who better to explore to the end of the tunnel than with minermike? it was pretty cool
nothing scary inside
took in the views along the trail before topping out into garden valley
went over to the rock formation near the arch and jack showed us some metates and more alcoves
then went around the back side of the arch and was able to climb up into it - fun!
went back through garden valley to the intersection with second water, where we had a snack break and just enjoyed the day (my usual pizza and an apple)
headed back along second water trail and made one more little side trip to see some other stuff including a low to the ground arch
kingsnake had parked at the main lot, so we took the lift
made one more side trip to the bluebird mine store for refreshing beverages ;)
had a great day and saw a lot of things off the main drag
trying to do a little more of this kind of hike
thanks, guys, especially our tour guide jack
