On the way back from my weekend at Picacho Peak State Park I took the back roads up thru Florence and decided since I was so close to BTA, I should make a detour. I ate a snack at the BTA parking lot in my car and then headed into the Arboretum. There were quite a few people milling around. My main interest was to check out the Iris so I headed toward the Demonstration Garden. On the way in I enjoyed the blooms of the aloe, Heavenly Bamboo and Texas Mountain Laurel. The plant life as you walk south seemed not to be in the best of shape but the biggest surprise was NO meadow. The whole circular area that is so much fun in spring is just dirt :yuck: . What a disappointment. HOWEVER, the rose vine filled with blooming lemon yellow roses above the large arbor was putting on a magnificent show so that somewhat made up for no meadow.

I walked by the Iris section and only a few bloomers (mostly the white Iris), some already done. The Mexican Rosebud Tree was starting to sprout buds so that was nice. Next was the garden section and even it didn't look as awesome as usual. There were some blooming plants but it seemed unkempt altho maybe it was the time of the day and the heat that didn't help. I walked around the garden and over to the water pond and even that was being worked on. There is also a little meadow section by the patio and it had "nada". Sometimes it's all about the timing but I have to say this is the most disappointed I have ever been when at BTA and I've been coming for a few decades now.

I wanted to get home by a certain time so I decided to see what was happening with the roses and the Children's garden but not before checking out the area by the rose arbor. There is this really cool cement rock bench that circles a huge tree trunk; that was pretty cool :) . Even when walking over to the Rose Garden, everything seemed not as lively as usual. Some of the rose bushes were blooming but not a lot. However, I did discover the one fountain rose tree is that way because of the trellis stand below it. I never noticed that before; it's pretty slick.

As to the Children's Garden, it hasn't been planted long but still had some nice flora. I didn't realize they had planted it in the colors of the rainbow so that was pretty neat. And now it was time to be on my way but not before stopping at the Gift Center to buy my Road Atlas. I always like buying stuff there as it benefits a good cause (even though sometimes it's a bit pricier); altho I do get a 10% discount as a member which is when I realized I must have dropped my membership card when I was changing SD cards. But they have me in the computer so I was good to go.

Yep it was a full weekend and what a great way to end it. I love the BTA, even on not such a good display day.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
