| no partners | | Last Saturday morning, as I was driving East on US 70 to meet up with Randy for our Mt. Graham camping adventure, I passed through what appeared to be a Ghost Town, named Geronimo on the North side of the highway. I Love old Ghost Towns and this one appeared to be right out of the pages of an old Route 66 travel brochure
I had time to spare so I hit the brakes, turned around and parked alongside the highway close to the old buildings. The buildings have a fair amount of graffiti sprayed on them but were still mostly standing and intact (at least from the outside) and had what remained of a sign indicating that at one time, this was Willis Auto Court. I crossed a cattle guard into the Auto Court driveway where the remains of four aged adobe rental units stood amidst old discarded tires and other debris from the decaying buildings. I took a few photos from a distance then went back to the main string of interconnected buildings which consisted of a gas station, grocery store, living quarters and a rental office.
There were no "NO TRESPASSING" signs visible so I peeked through the broken and boarded windows of the main building, which was probably the rental office. The floor was littered with papers, discarded items of clothing, upturned furniture and there on the wall was, what appeared to be..... streaks of blood I had to get into this boarded up building and check this out further
The building was accessible through open back doors so I cautiously entered a litter strewn room, not knowing what may be lurking below the mounds of debris that completely covered the floors I didn't have as much time as I wanted, so I made a quick tour of the rooms and took a series of photos that I would be able to scrutinize in depth at a later date and time.
I finally got around to examining the photos further yesterday and did some Google research on Geronimo. There's not much available for historic records but Wikipedia has this to offer; https://en.wikipedi ... zona A large concrete structure stands to the West of the main buildings across Geronimo Ln. which was, according to a badly faded sign, a large grocery store. Satellite views of the surrounding area showed very little of interest, but, I'm going to have to pay this place another visit when I'm able to spend more time looking deeper into; A Ghost Town named after a great Native American Indian Chief.
