Put on a long sleeve knit shirt under my short sleeve hiking shirt to ward off the morning's temps but it turns out that I didn't need all the clothing. Only one vehicle in the parking lot upon my arrival so not expecting to meet any hikers on the trails today.
I signed in at 0620 and although it was before sunrise, it was still plenty light even though there were lots of heavy clouds to the East and West. The trails are good and it doesn't look like the recent rains did anything for the wash, even the pools are still empty. I did find a slight flowage above the balancing rock but you had to look to see it Met a woman and her Black Lab who had spent the night camping at the saddle as they were on their way back down.
Fremont Saddle was deserted, as I had expected and the quiet was infectious. The heavy clouds still hung out everywhere but over Weavers Needle, I was hoping for something more dramatic but not here, not today. I was sweating pretty good by now but I continued on out to the Pinon Tree on the point. When I got out there, I stripped off the long sleeve shirt and it was soaking wet.
Something interesting happened today, as I was hiking up, I paused to take a photo back down the canyon, so I removed my CPL (circular polarized lens filter) from the camera and put it in my shirt pocket. When I got to the Pinon Tree, I wanted to use the CPL and pulled it out of my pocket only to find that it was wet with perspiration. So I got my cleaning rag and cleaned the CPL and the camera lens then installed the CPL. Well, the CPL must have still been damp cause it transferred moisture to the surface of the camera lens and the next few shots were surreal, almost like I was in a heavy fog. Finally I noticed something was amiss and removed the CPL and allowed the camera lens to clear itself. Now I gotta figure out a way to do this intentionally
The trip back to the trailhead was uneventful, met three groups of two hikers. The parking lot had several vehicles and one very large group. I reminded them that there is a 15 person group limit and they were aware of the regulation and the hikers were being broken up into smaller groups. Can't wait for more of this chill-in-the-air weather.
