The temp was in the mid 50's at 05-dark-45 and the sun was a long way from rising as I hit the trail out of the Mining Camp. The sky was clear with lots of stars shining but I needed a flashlight to keep from stumbling on the rocky trail at the early hour.
As I approached the Basin, I could see another hiker on the trail behind me but otherwise no one else in sight. At the Basin, I removed a sweat soaked long sleeve knit shirt that I had worn just in case and took a short break. The other hiker continued on up the slick rock surface of the basin while I headed back down.
As I descended, I met two more hikers heading up, one in training for a future Ridgeline hike, the other heading to the Flatiron. On the trail, just below the Gatekeeper, I noticed a large boulder alongside the trail with white graffiti paint on it.... I think it says "Dont Smoke N Hike". I only hope the artist didn't continue up the trail with his can of paint.
As I got to my truck, I checked Route Scout and found that I did the up-and-back in under two hours..... I think that's a personal best |
