I Listened to the weather forecast Wed. night and thought today (Thursday) would be an overcast day and perfect for hitting the Peralta Trail up to Fremont Saddle. :? Well, that's what I get for believing the Meteorologists, but it was a beautiful start to the day under clear sky's, quite humid and a light breeze from the South as I signed the log at 0618.

The trail's pretty well overgrown at the start and throughout the trail there are lots of loose rocks to contend with, most likely due to Monsoon storms that tend to wreck havoc with the trails. But since there were no other vehicles in the parking lot, I had the entire canyon all to myself, and that felt wonderful.

It didn't take too long before the temp began rising and combine that with the humidity, I was sweating pretty good... and, where the heck did that breeze go to? Soon I was out of the shade and into full sunlight and, by now, above all the shady sections of the trail. I took my time now and paid more attention to the Hoodoo's lining the upper reaches along the Western side of the canyon as the sun continued it's rise in the morning sky.

When I reached the Saddle, I removed my gear and sat on a large rock overlooking Weavers Needle. I just sat there, allowing the sweat to dry from my forehead and t-shirt. I was still alone on the saddle, listening to the light breeze stirring the leaves on the bushes, listening to the birds singing their morning songs and I could almost hear the Hoodoo's whispering as the breeze passed between them.

Once rested, I reluctantly climbed back into my gear and turned to head back down the trail, but pausing for a moment to take advantage of the silence that hung unnoticeably about the Saddle.... All too soon, the weather will cool and the hoards will return and be attacking the trails with their litter and noisy presence.

As I was descending, I met a couple on their way up, they asked me if this was the way up to view the 'Needle'. I told them that they still had a half mile before reaching the overlook. As we briefly talked, I noticed that they were each carrying a half empty bottle of water, and had no backpacks :o . I asked them if they had enough water, and he responded that they had two or three bottles.... and off they went. Sure hope they make it back :scared: this scares the heck out of me because too many inexperienced hikers aren't even aware of their hiking abilities and problems arise.

Once back at the trailhead, I signed out on the log, removed my gear, stowed it and was soon on the dusty Peralta Road heading home.

The trees are losing some of their summer gloss, but that may be due to the lack of rain.
