I will only do night hikes on trails I'm familiar with, so Horton was the perfect choice. We started a few minutes after 7:00 to an empty parking lot. Nice weather, and there was a great sunset, but we were down in the trees so didn't get a good view.
About halfway up, I saw a snake on the trail--rattler of course, so glad we drove 100 miles just to see one. He rattled at us once, but with the creek drowning out the sound, we would never have heard him. We waited a minute for him to move off the trail, then continued on our way. Close to the spring, we startled two deer who were hanging out by the creek. We hung out at the spring for a few minutes, took some pics, and enjoyed the scenery we were so familiar with in daylight from a new evening perspective.
The walk back was uneventful. Lots of bugs and spiderwebs, but nothing too bad. We did hear one large animal crunching through the brush near the creek, but never saw it, I'm guessing it was another deer. We had some moonlight on the way back down, and plenty of stars to look at through the trees. Fun evening, and a great choice for an easy night hike. |
