| no partners | | It looked like this morning would be just cool, cloudy, and breezy enough to do my usual weekday loop. Started at 7:30, and headed up Bursera. I've never really cared for Bursera, and today was no different. Part way up, I spotted the back half of a rattler along the trail, jumped a mile, realized its head was already well into a hole in the ground, felt silly for jumping like that about a snake that posed no threat, took a few pics, and kept going. The last half mile of Bursera, from the wash up to National, is still kind of a mess, but no worse than the the last time I was on it.
Just after I started to head east on National, I could hear something walking on the rocks ahead of me. I looked around for a second and then spotted a tortoise just off the trail. I took a bunch of pics, and thought it was so cute that I'd really like to hug it, but it hissed at me, so I moved on after a few minutes.
The rest of the hike was pretty quiet. I thought about cutting the loop short at the Ruins trail, but since I didn't work out at all yesterday, decided to get the full ten miles in. Only saw six people today, all near the trailhead. Nice day, but I'll be glad when it's a little cooler. |
