The only time that I had to do any hiking this weekend was this afternoon. Despite the warm weather I decided to introduce myself to the Granite Mountain Trailhead for a short hike. looking at the maps online I planned my route to be the Bootlegger Trail to the Granite Mt Trail then back to the Powerline Rd Trail and back to the trailhead. I arrived at the trailhead at about 1:30 to find it mostly empty. After double checking my route I got underway at 1:45 I enjoyed the different "look" this area had than some of the other areas that I had been too. The prevalence of the yucca plants contributed to it. some of the rock formations scattered about were interesting. the trail was smooth providing oppurtunities to view the countryside. The wildflowers were in abundance. In due time I arrived at the junction with the Granite Mountain Loop Trail and turned down it. The trail turned a little rockier so I had to pay a little more attention to where I was going. interesting views still presented themselves and off course I still found saguaros to take pictures off. Coming down the trail I encountered a desert tortoise heading up the trail.
That was a thrill for me! I took a couple of pictures and left it to it's journey. Finally I turned on to the Powerline Rd Trail. As I was approaching the trail head I saw a hawk fly onto a bush. I was so excited to get a shot of one in the wild so to speak. Then I noticed the people who just starting up the trail and a woman wearing gloves blew a whistle and the hawk flew onto her hand. So much for a picture of a wild hawk. There was another woman with a hawk who told me that they were being trained. So I had a successful encounter with the area and look forward to coming back.
