We took the counterclockwise direction from Marshall Saddle, up Aspen to Radio Ridge, down Lemmon Rock Trail and back on Wilderness of Rocks. The diversion shown in my track was to have lunch at what we call the big balanced rock, which is a hundred yards or so off the WOR trail south of the WOR/Lemmon Rock junction. When we first started going out there, there was little sign of a trail, but it has been found by more and more people who have beaten in a faint trail. We met a trail cleanup crew about half way down Aspen who is doing great work removing down trees. If you're reading this, thanks guys.
A little warm coming up WOR to Marshall Saddle, but there is a good bit of shade. There is a little water in Marshall Gulch, but what we saw of Lemmon Rock and WOR was bone dry. Highly recommend this loop this time of year. Great temps and great views.
Unfortunately, we could see the smoke plumes coming from the various fires on Mt. Graham. Coming down the mountain, we saw several firefightling planes staging out of the San Pedro Valley, probably San Manuel or Mammoth. So sad to see. I caught a picture of one plane. |
