After Chemin de la Vierge (see my last post), we headed to our second via ferrata at the du Diable complex off D1006 near Aussois. Repeating some of the earlier post, Via Ferrata du Diable is the largest collection of via ferratas in one place in France. There are routes of all levels of difficulty, exposure, etc., on both sides of the River Arc (including one of the hardest routes in France, the Les Rois Magnes, which is rated 5, 5, A). See my earlier post and pictures for an explanation of the rating system.

Some routes are reached out of the Fort Victor Emmanuel, built in the 19th century by the Piedmontese king to defend aginst French invasion. More routes are reached on the south side of the river behind the massive treetop adventure park behind the Redoute Marie-Therese. Cliffs on the two sides are connected by a foot bridge and at another two places by tyrolean cables. Very impressive place to visit, even if you don't do any via ferratas.

My book graded Stage E (La Traversee des Anges) as technical grade 3 (of 5), exposure 4 (of 5), and seriousness A (of A, B, or C). 360 meters long with and ascent of 60 m. Some good vertical, but considerable lateral movement along cliff above River Arc. Excellent, sustained exposure, but great protection and lots of rock contact. Easy approach; just go left of the adventure park to the cliff and look for the gate. You actually lose elevation on the route, exiting near the nice stable footbridge connecting the two sides of the river. Return up the path to the Redoute car park.

One unique feature of this route is that it passes under a couple of really long zip lines from the adventure park over to the Fort side. Kept listening but not one scream the whole time, despite the potential 1500 foot drop to the river.

Sorry, no track for this one either because my gps battery was no. Not very helpful anyway since the cliffs interfere with signal.
